Spying the underground: visualizing subsurface utilities’ location uncertainties with fuzzy 3D

Get PDF
Spying the Underground refers to the buried utilities that are often hidden from the eyes of citizens and city engineers. Since they are difficult to localize and measure from street level, utility plans are the only models that convey geometry information about them. Nowadays, Augmented Reality (AR) techniques allow us to display three-dimensional (3D) virtual utility models over a surface level camera image. To achieve this, 3D information needs to be added to existing utility models. Therefore, we developed a data model that allows storage of depth and geometry information. Based on this, we developed a fuzzy model that will visualize a fuzzy shape that indicates the uncertainty related to the location of each utility. We developed all this while generating 3D models for subsurface utilities at Oostplein Rotterdam

Background: The identification and use of Ancestry-Sensitive Markers (ASMs), i.e. genetic polymorphisms facilitating the genetic reconstruction of geographical origins of individuals, is far from straightforward. Results: Here we describe the ascertainment and application of five different sets of 47 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) allowing the inference of major human groups of different continental origin. For this, we first used 74 cell lines, representing human males from six different geographical areas and screened them with the Affymetrix Mapping 10K assay. In addition to using summary statistics estimating the genetic diversity among multiple groups of individuals defined by geography or language, we also used the program STRUCTURE to detect genetically distinct subgroups. Subsequently, we used a pairwise FSTranking procedure among all pairs of genetic subgroups in order to identify a single best performing set of ASMs. Our initial results were independently confirmed by genotyping this set of ASMs in 22 individuals from Somalia, Afghanistan and Sudan and in 919 samples from the CEPH Human Genome Diversity Panel (HGDP-CEPH). Conclusion: By means of our pairwise population FSTranking approach we identified a set of 47 SNPs that could serve as a panel of ASMs at a continental level

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common side effects of prostate cancer (PC) treatment and may lead to changes in a relationship. The aim of this study was to identify sexual and/or relational problems and to investigate what kind of supportive care is preferred by patients and their partners. A cross-sectional survey was performed among men diagnosed with PC enrolled in active surveillance or treated with laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy or hormonal therapy. If possible, partners were included as well. Out of 250 patients, 80,5% suffered from moderate to severe erectile complaints. Half of them (53,7%) was treated for ED and a great part was partially (30,7%) up to not satisfied (25,7%). Out of 168 partners, 50,6% found it difficult to cope with changes around sexuality. The majority of men (74,7%) preferred a standard consultation with a urologist-sexologist three months after treatment to discuss sexuality

Alcohol intake in relation to brain magnetic resonance imaging findings in older persons without dementia

BACKGROUND: Consumers of light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol have a lower risk of dementia and, possibly, Alzheimer disease than do abstainers. Because vascular disease may contribute to symptoms of Alzheimer disease, reduction of cerebrovascular disease in consumers of light amounts of alcohol could account for that observation. However, a low concentration of alcohol may also have direct effects on the hippocampus, a brain structure highly affected by Alzheimer disease. OBJECTIVE: We investigated alcohol intake in relation to brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of presumed vascular

Elbow Joint Loads during Simulated Activities of Daily Living:Implications for Formulating Recommendations after Total Elbow Arthroplasty.

Background: Overloading of the elbow joint prosthesis following total elbow arthroplasty can lead to implant failure. Joint moments during daily activities are not well-contextualized for a prosthesis' failure limits and the effect of the current postoperative instruction on elbow joint loading is unclear. This study investigates the difference in elbow joint moments between simulated daily tasks and between flexion-extension, pronation-supination, varus-valgus movement directions. Additionally, the effect of the current postoperative instruction on elbow joint load is examined. Methods: Nine healthy participants (age 45.8 ± 17 years, 3 males) performed eight tasks; driving a car, opening a door, rising from chair, lifting, sliding, combing hair, drinking, emptying cup, without and with the instruction "not lifting more than 1 kg". Upper limb kinematics and hand contact forces were measured. Elbow joint angles and net moments were analyzed using inverse dynamic analysis, where the net moments are estimated from movement data and external forces. Results: Peak elbow joint moments differed significantly between tasks (p < 0.01) and movement directions (p < 0.01). The most and least demanding tasks were, rising from a chair (13.4 Nm extension, 5.0 Nm supination, 15.2 Nm valgus) and sliding (4.3 Nm flexion, 1.7 Nm supination, 2.6 Nm varus). Net moments were significantly reduced after instruction only in the chair task (p < 0.01).Conclusion: This study analyzed elbow joint moments in different directions during daily tasks. The outcomes question whether postoperative instruction can lead to decreasing elbow loads. Future research might focus on reducing elbow loads in the flexion-extension and varus-valgus directions.<br/

Agreement between physical therapists and radiologists of stratifying patients with shoulder pain into new treatment related categories using ultrasound; an exploratory study

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Study design: A systematic overview of the literature and an agreement study. Objectives: The aim of this study is to explore the inter-professional agreement of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (DMUS) between physical therapists (PT) and radiologists, using a new classification strategy based upon the therapeutic consequences in patients with shoulder pain. Background: DMUS is frequently used by PTs, although the agreement regarding traditional diagnostic labels between PTs and radiologists is only fair. Nevertheless, DMUS could be useful when used as a stratifying-tool. Methods: First, a systematic overview of current evidence was performed to assess which traditional diagnostic labels could be recoded into new treatment related categories (referral to secondary care, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, watchful waiting). Next, kappa values were calculated for these categories between PTs and radiologists. Results: Only three categories were extracted, as none of the traditional diagnostic labels were classified into the ‘corticosteroid injection’ category. Overall, we found moderate agreement to stratify patients into treatment related categories and substantial agreement for the category ‘referral to secondary care’. Both categories ‘watchful waiting’ and ‘indication for physical therapy’ showed moderate agreement between the two professions. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the agreement between radiologists and PTs is moderate to substantial when labelling is based on treatment consequences. DMUS might be able to help the PT to guide treatment, especially for the category ‘referral to secondary care’ as this showed the highest agreement. However, as this is just an explorative study, more research is needed, to validate and assess the consequences of this stratification classification for clinical care

Analyse Bouwstenen Nationaal Strategisch Plan Aquacultuur
