    Effect of the Wilbarger Deep Tactile and Proprioceptive Technique on behaviour and salivary cortisol in children with sensory processing difficulties

Johannesburg, 2015This study investigated the short-term changes in behavioural regulation and salivary cortisol before and after administration of a single application of the Wilbarger Deep Tactile and Proprioceptive Technique (DTPT) in children with Sensory Modulation Dysfunction (SMD). In a pre- and post-test research design, the negative behaviours as well as the salivary cortisol levels of 21 participants was assessed before and after administration of the Wilbarger DTPT. Statistically, significant changes were found for negative behaviours related to participants’ concentration, attention, and readiness for a task; their behaviour in the group, and their perseverance and task completion. Children with sensory overresponsivity benefited the most from the intervention. The association between salivary cortisol levels and therefore, sympathetic nervous system arousal and the Wilbarger DTPT, was confirmed. Higher baseline cortisol levels were found for participants with sensory overresponsivity, decreasing significantly in the post-test, while the opposite was found for participants with sensory underresponsivity

    The neutral coma of comets: A review

    The hypothesis that water snow controls the vaporization of the nucleus of some comets seems verified from the general order of magnitude of the size of their nucleus and of their nuclear albedo; the largest observed production rates are H and OH which both seem to originate from the photodissociation of H2O, as also confirmed by the scale length of the invisible parent molecule producing OH. However, comet Encke is not uniformly covered by water snow, as it produces only one tenth of the expected vaporization. Early results on comet Kohoutek suggest that the conclusions could be slightly different for some of the new comets in Oort's sense. If the far ultraviolet observations confirm the early assessments of the production rates of C, O and H, then at least another major constituent competing with water has not yet been detected. Such a major constituent is suggested by the ratios C/O = 0.24 and H/O = 2.5

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of body positioning immediately after delivery on respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life in newborn calves. One hundred and one Belgian White and Blue calves were delivered at term by an elective caesarean section and were assigned into three categories according to the body position imposed immediately after umbilical cord rupture: 71 calves were placed in lateral recumbency; 16 calves were placed in sternal recumbency and 14 calves were suspended by the hind legs for less than 90 seconds (75 +/- 5 s). Following this initial body position, the calves were allowed to move without restraint. They were examined at birth, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes, and 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours after birth by the following measurements: physical examination, heart rate, arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests using the esophageal balloon catheter technique, arterial and venous blood acid-base balance analysis, rectal temperature, jugular venous blood sampling for the determination of blood glucose, plasma lactate and serum cortisol concentrations, haematologic variables and passive immune transfer variables. Body positioning immediately after delivery clearly influenced respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life in term calves delivered by an elective caesarean section. Systematic sternal recumbency and suspension by the hind legs for less than 90 seconds immediately after umbilical cord rupture had a positive functional impact on postnatal pulmonary mechanics and gas exchange and on postnatal correction of mixed acidosis present at birth, contributing in turn to an enhanced passive immune transfer. These two body positions should be encouraged to improve adaptation at birth in healthy term calves delivered by an elective caesarean section. Evaluation of possible side-effects is required before application in severely asphyxiated calves.Peer reviewe

    Migration of Jupiter-family comets and resonant asteroids to near-Earth space

    We estimated the rate of comet and asteroid collisions with the terrestrial planets by calculating the orbits of 13000 Jupiter-crossing objects (JCOs) and 1300 resonant asteroids and computing the probabilities of collisions based on random-phase approximations and the orbital elements sampled with a 500 yr step. The Bulirsh-Stoer and a symplectic orbit integrator gave similar results for orbital evolution, but sometimes give different collision probabilities with the Sun. A small fraction of former JCOs reached orbits with aphelia inside Jupiter's orbit, and some reached Apollo orbits with semi-major axes less than 2 AU, Aten orbits, and inner-Earth orbits (with aphelia less than 0.983 AU) and remained there for millions of years. Though less than 0.1% of the total, these objects were responsible for most of the collision probability of former JCOs with Earth and Venus. Some Jupiter-family comets can reach inclinations i>90 deg.
