In today's social scenary the progressive centrality of personal services appears as a complex phenomenon, with advantages and limitations related to the risk that companies and organizations can not adequately govern the internal dynamics of working people. Organizations have the role to mediate between characteristics of the human beings (motivations, goals, needs) and those of the environment, trying to create a balance. When they fail in this task, the environment becomes useful field for the onset of organizational pathologies, such as burnout

Organ transplantation is considered a life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage pathologies. The knowledge and the attitude of nurses can positively influence the willingness of family members and patients to give consent to organ and conse- quently organ donation rates. To understand the critical capacity of nursing students to self- evaluate themselves on information on brain death, donation and transplantation, investi- gating scientific knowledge, predisposition and attitude related to these topics through a survey. METHOD: This work is a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out among conveniently selected undergraduate nursing students (n = 578) of three Universities respectively in northern, center and southern of Italy using a questionnaire formulated on the basis of the FAQs prepared by the National Transplant Center (CNT). RESULTS: Most of students show an adequate level of knowledge and attitudes favorable to organ and tissue donation even if very few students have signed the donor card. Students' knowledge and perceptions are still lacking in specific areas such as legislations (only 6%). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest the need for revising the nursing curricula to improve the future nurses' skills, increase the modality to sign the donor card and favor the rate of organ donation

Background: In the present social scenery the progressive focus of the services for the people appears as a complex phenomenon with advantages and limits tied up to the risk that the society and the organizations are not adequately able to govern its proper workers dynamics. The organizations have the role to mediate between the human being characteristics (motivations, objective, needs) and those of the work place environment, trying to create an equilibrium. When they fail in this assignment, the work environment becomes useful field to rise up some organizational pathologies, such as burnout. Objectives: The objective is to evaluate the different burnout levels in nurses of surgical, medical and paediatric fields and to individualize possible working and individual factors with the purpose to know the influential causes of satisfaction and dissatisfaction which determine the involvement, motivation and appointment levels with which the subjects manage the relationship with the organization. Methods: The sample is constituted by 155 nurses divided in 3 groups, 50 of surgical field, 55 of medical field and 50 of paediatric field, to which have been administered some questionnaires directed to evaluate the organizational health, personality characteristics and burnout risk factors. Results: The 17% of subjects of the sample result to be in burnout, but meaningful differences don't be underlined among the subjects belonging to the different departments. Instead result meaningful the differences related to the perception of job environment comfort, work stress and among the subjects in burnout and those not at risk. Organizational health is felt differently among the nurses from different fields: medical and surgical nurses perceive the working environment in more negative way in comparison to those from paediatric field. Discussion: It seems to exist a hold relationship between the burnout, the years of job and the distance from the employment place in examined nurses. In them exists a real lost of the ability to persevere in the assignment and to respect the professional duties. The only one note of relief, in the difference among the various categories, shows that the paediatric nurses altogether express some most positive evaluations of the various aspects of job condition. Conclusions: It appears necessary to solicit the business organizations and the various institutions with the purpose to compile a interventions plan aimed to reduce the risk factors and at the same time to furnish a support to those people that are already affected from burnout and to their families with the purpose to make them easier and rapid a gradual re-entry in the social and professional life

Assessment of the impact of nursing students’ presence on quality of care perceived by patients in three medical bay wards for acute patients of Policlinico Umberto I Hospital in Rome. Objective and purpose of the research. The impact that the presence of nursing students in hospital wards has on quality of care perceived by patients, empirically recognized by all health professionals, is poorly studied in literature. The purpose of the s following study is to determine if presence of students influences or not the perception that users have about quality of care. Materials and methods. The study was conducted according to the “Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scales”, validated for Italy by Campus Biomedico University of Rome. A single-blind crossover study was chosen. In order to avoid the influence on the final outcome due to intrinsic differences between different wards, patients were involved in the same wards both as sample elements and as controls. The controlled cross-over study was conducted in Operating Units of the Medical Area of the Policlinico Umberto I, the Italian version of the already validated “Newcastle Satisfaction With Nursing Scales” questionnaire was administered at first defined T0 when the students were not present and later defined T1 when the students carried out clinical training in the wards. The sample recruited, being a pilot study, has a reduced number, 100 questionnaires were distributed in the three departments chosen (two of infectious diseases and one of medicine) for each of the two phases. Results. The correctly completed questionnaires for 72% of the questionnaires distributed were validated for the study, in particular 75% were correctly returned completed in the first phase, against 71% of the second. Patients were aged between 18 and 87 years (7% under 35, 61% between 35 and 70, 32% over 70), with an average age of 615 years. Data obtained in each period and for each ward were compared to highlight any differences. Conclusions. The results confirmed that presence of students improves the perceived quality of care, in 2 cases out of 3 significantly, confirming empirically the starting hypothesis. Due to the small size of the sample, further investigations are necessary to confirm our data

Background. Crohn’s Disease (CD) has an incidence on the physical and psychological autonomy of the patient, such as to alter their daily life. The impact of the disease on the daily life of the patients is related to the symptoms and complications of the disease. Patient autonomy and participation in social and work life are the goals that nurses must reach for patients with CD to improve their quality of life. Aim. To measure the perception of the health of people with a diagnosis of CD. Method. Review of the literature on PubMed, and internet sites. Administration on the web of the standardised questionnaire Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results. A total of 228 patients with CD completed valid questionnaires and were enrolled. The SF-12 questionnaire scores make it possible to build a physical health index (PCS) with a median value of 36,10 (min 33,8; max 42,4) and mental health index (MCS) with a median value of 36,04 (min 28.5; max 38,4). There were statistically significant data related to the achievement of the degree with median 41.9 (min 35,1; max 48,4) compared to non-graduates with a p<0.001 and in relation to the employment level (median 37.9 min/max 34,7/46,7) compared to unemployed and inactive with a p = 0.03. Conclusion. Despite the inevitable complications of the disease (intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms), most of our sample did not exhibit significant physical limitations (surgical intervention, stomach packaging which generally causes a decrease in libido in both male and female patients ). The nurse cares for a patient with CD must have not only technical skills and specialist skills, but a holistic vision of the patient. Despite some findings in this study, this research orientation deserves more attention

Impact of nursing students on the quality of care perceived by patients. a systematic review of the literature

OBJECTIVE: The quality assessment process, based on customer satisfaction, is fundamental in the delivery of the best care services. This is most evident in care settings where trainee students are allowed to assist the patients. The purpose of this review is to clarify whether nursing students have an impact on patients’ assessment of the quality of their nursing care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines in six databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycInfo. Two co-authors independently screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, following explicit exclusion and inclusion criteria. Analyses included non-randomized and non-homogeneous samples, involving both selected patients and methods for assessing their satisfaction. RESULTS: After full-text screening, 30 articles were identified, but only 11 were considered pertinent to the topic of the review. The trainee-patient relationship is based on mutual help and can improve the patient experience and trainee learning. The instruments used to measure perceived quality were found to be valid and reliable. CONCLUSIONS: The studies under review show high levels of satisfaction among patients when nursing care is delivered through training, particularly when the patients who agree to be treated by nursing trainees have previous experience of hospitalization and relationships with trainees. Educational background and the empathy and communication skills of both professional nurses and trainees influence patients’ perception of the quality of care and their satisfaction with it
