    Record of thermoluminescence in sea sediments in the last millennia

    The profile of thermoluminescence (TL) has been measured in the Ionian shallow-water core GT89-3 with a resolution of 3.096 years (corresponding to a sampling interval of 2 mm) during the last 1800 years. A similar TL record was previously obtained in the core GT14, taken from the same area, with a resolution of 3.87 years (corresponding to a sampling interval of 2.5 mm). We present here the comparison of the TL profiles. We confirm the presence of the centennial and the decennial cycles earlier identified in the TL signal, corresponding to cyclicities appearing to exist in the solar-activity records. We discuss the origin of the TL signal by comparison with the cosmogenic isotopes 14C and 10Be records

    On the solar origin of the 200 y Suess wiggles: Evidence from thermoluminescence in sea sediments

    In order to understand the origin of the Suess wiggles, present in the tree ring 14C record, we have studied the thermoluminescence (TL) of a shallow-water Ionian sea core, in an attempt to provide a record of an indicator responding to the solar output more promptly than 14C in tree rings. The spectral content of the TL and radiocarbon records is very similar; neverthless, in addition to the 207 y Suess wave (A43.6% ), the TL record shows the second harmonic (103.5 y; A42.4% ), in phase with the envelope of the 11 y solar cycles. This result, obtained by different spectral methods, in particular by Superposition of Epochs (SE) and by Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), strongly supports the solar origin of the 200 y Suess wiggles

    Interval temporal logics provide a natural framework for temporal reasoning about interval structures over linearly ordered domains, where intervals are taken as first-class citizens. Their expressive power and computational behaviour mainly depend on two parameters: the set of modalities they feature and the linear orders over which they are interpreted. In this paper, we consider all fragments of Halpern and Shoham's interval temporal logic hs with a decidable satisfiability problem over the rationals, and we provide a complete classification of them in terms of their expressiveness and computational complexity by solving the last few open problems

    Earthquakes in a fault system embedded in an elastic body subject to increasing shear stress

    We consider the faults of an elastic body subject to an increasing stress and the stress field generated by slip on a fault. The slip along the fault releases the stress component parallel to the slip, but the component normal to the fault is not released and increases in time at the same rate as the shear affecting the body. The effect is an increase of the value of the force necessary to cause the subsequent slip; and, if the shear increases linearly, it causes an increase of the time intervals between the earthquakes on the fault, that is between the stress drop p and the slip s. The density distribution of p in a given time interval is computed; it is found that rigorously it is not a power law although it is a decreasing function of p. It is also seen that, as in the cases in which it was assumed that the component of the stress field locking the fault, after each earthquake, in the time interval to the next earthquake, would be anelastically released, the logarithm of the density distribution of the moments of the earthquakes is a linear function of log (M0 ) and a linear function of M in any time interval; M0 and M being the scalar seismic moment and the magnitude, respectively. Conditions for the existence of these linear relationships are discussed finding that a sufficient condition, when the range of p is not exceptionally large, is that the density distribution of p be of the type log (p), which includes the case when it is independent of the fault linear size l. The Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship and the conditions to obtain aftershocks and seismic swarms generated by this model are presented and discussed. In order to obtain the observed density distribution of earthquakes one or several hypotheses can be done: 1) the stress locking the faults, between successive earthquakes of the same fault, is released anelastically; 2) the density distribution of the sizes of the faults is such as to cause the logarithm of the density distribution of log (M0) and of M to be linear; 3) the density distribution of log M0 (M) is linear and the linearity factor is related to the density distribution of the stress drop and not to that of the linear dimensions of the faults

    Abstract Interval temporal logics take time intervals, instead of time instants, as their primitive temporal entities. One of the most studied interval temporal logics is Halpern and Shoham’s modal logic of time intervals HS, which associates a modal operator with each binary relation between intervals over a linear order (the so-called Allen’s interval relations). In this paper, we compare and classify the expressiveness of all fragments of HS on the class of all linear orders and on the subclass of all dense linear orders. For each of these classes, we identify a complete set of definabilities between HS modalities, valid in that class, thus obtaining a complete classification of the family of all 4096 fragments of HS with respect to their expressiveness. We show that on the class of all linear orders there are exactly 1347 expressively different fragments of HS, while on the class of dense linear orders there are exactly 966 such expressively different fragments

    Congenital scoliosis associated with agenesis of the uterine cervix. Case report

    BACKGROUND: Alterations in the normal sequence of development of müllerian ducts lead to a wide spectrum of reproductive tract abnormalities. A rare form of lack of development, regarding a short tract of the müllerian ducts, leads to the isolated agenesis of the uterine cervix. Anomalies identified among patients with müllerian agenesis include skeletal deformities (i.e., scoliosis of the spine and Klippel-Feil anomaly). CASE PRESENTATION: A 46 years old woman presenting cyphoscoliosis and very low stature (120 cm – 3,93 feet), came to our observation for acute pelvic pain; she also reported primary amenorrhoea associated with cyclic pelvic pain. Clinical and imaging evaluation, evidenced a blind vaginal duct of normal length, left cystic adnexal mass, and enlarged uterus with hematometra. FSH, LH, 17β estradiol and CA-125, karyotype and radiographic study of limbs and vertebral column were also evaluated. At laparotomy, a left ovarian cyst was found. Uterus ended at the isthmus; under this level a thin fibrous tissue band was found, joining the uterus to the vagina. Uterine cervix was replaced by fibrous tissue containing some dilated glands lined with müllerian epithelium. Karyotype resulted 46, XX. The described skeletal deformity, were consistent with Klippel-Feil syndrome. CONCLUSION: We report a case of congenital scoliosis associated with müllerian agenesis limited to uterine cervix, association thus far seen only among patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome (utero-vaginal agenesis). This case report supports the necessity to evaluate, for accompanying müllerian anomalies, all cases of congenital structural scoliosis in view of the possibility for many müllerian development abnormalities, if timely diagnosed, to be surgically corrected

    Volcanic CO2 tracks the incubation period of basaltic paroxysms

    The ordinarily benign activity of basaltic volcanoes is periodically interrupted by violent paroxysmal explosions ranging in size from Hawaiian to Plinian in the most extreme examples. These paroxysms often occur suddenly and with limited or no precursors, leaving their causal mechanisms still incompletely understood. Two such events took place in summer 2019 at Stromboli, a volcano otherwise known for its persistent mild open-vent activity, resulting in one fatality and damage to infrastructure. Here, we use a post hoc analysis and reinterpretation of volcanic gas compositions and fluxes acquired at Stromboli to show that the two paroxysms were preceded by detectable escalations in volcanic plume CO2 degassing weeks to months beforehand. Our results demonstrate that volcanic gas CO2 is a key driver of explosions and that the preparatory periods ahead of explosions in basaltic systems can be captured by precursory CO2 leakage from deeply stored mafic magma
