    Influence of non-local damping on magnon properties of ferromagnets

    We study the influence of non-local damping on magnon properties of Fe, Co, Ni and Fe1−x_{1-x}Cox_{x} (x=30%,50%x=30\%,50\%) alloys. The Gilbert damping parameter is typically considered as a local scalar both in experiment and in theoretical modelling. However, recent works have revealed that Gilbert damping is a non-local quantity that allows for energy dissipation between atomic sites. With the Gilbert damping parameters calculated from a state-of-the-art real-space electronic structure method, magnon lifetimes are evaluated from spin dynamics and linear response, where a good agreement is found between these two methods. It is found that non-local damping affects the magnon lifetimes in different ways depending on the system. Specifically, we find that in Fe, Co, and Ni the non-local damping decreases the magnon lifetimes, while in Fe70Co30\rm Fe_{70}Co_{30} and Fe50_{50}Co50_{50} an opposite, non-local damping effect is observed, and our data show that it is much stronger in the former

    Local Resistance in Early Medieval Chinese Historiography and the Problem of Religious Overinterpretation

    Official Chinese historiography is a treasure trove of information on local resistance to the centralised empire in early medieval China (third to sixth century). Sinologists specialised in the study of Chinese religions commonly reconstruct the religious history of the era by interpreting some of these data. In the process, however, the primary purpose of the historiography of local resistance is often overlooked, and historical interpretation easily becomes ‘overinterpretation’—that is, ‘fabricating false intensity’ and ‘seeing intensity everywhere’, as French historian Paul Veyne proposed to define the term. Focusing on a cluster of historical anecdotes collected in the standard histories of the four centuries under consideration, this study discusses the supposedly ‘religious’ nature of some of the data they contain

    Fundus Examination of 23,861 Newborns by Digital Imaging in Ningbo

    Purpose. To perform fundus examinations of full-term and premature infants to identify common congenital ocular diseases and determine the incidence and additional risk factors in Ningbo, China. Methods. Fundus examinations were performed on newborns between January 2017 and July 2020 in Ningbo using a RetCam3 or PanoCam LT wide-field digital imaging system. The neonates’ birth weight, gestational age, gender, delivery mode, oxygen intake, and other conditions were recorded. We compared the incidence of ocular abnormalities in both full-term newborns and premature infants. Results. There were 23,861 newborns in this study comprising 12,605 (52.8%) male and 11,256 (47.2%) female infants, 20,938 full-term babies, and 2,923 premature babies. The average gestational age was 37.9 ± 5.6 weeks, and the average birth weight was 3,189 ± 417 g. Overall, we found ocular abnormalities in 6,645 (27.8%). The most common abnormality in full-term newborns was retinal hemorrhage (RH), which we found in 3,827 (18.3%) cases. Other diseases identified included familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), retinoblastoma (RB), and congenital cataracts. The delivery method had a significant impact on the incidence of neonatal RH (P<0.001). Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was observed in 617 newborns accounting for 21.1% of all screened premature infants. Logistic analysis showed that gestational age and birth weight were important risk factors for ROP (P<0.001). For treatable diseases, such as ROP, FEVR, congenital cataract, glaucoma, and RB, early identification allows for active treatment or referral to a specialized hospital for further treatment. Conclusion. Early examination and prompt treatment of ocular disorders in newborns are important to avoid lifelong visual impairment. Eye examinations should be performed during the neonatal period and at regular follow-up visits

    Non-Coding RNAs Participate in the Regulation of CRY-DASH in the Growth and Early Development of Saccharina japonica (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae)

    CRY-DASH, a new cryptochrome blue light receptor, can repair damaged DNA and regulate secondary metabolism and development of fungus. However, its role in regulation during the growth of Saccharina japonica is still unclear. After cloning the full-length of CRY-DASH from S. japonica (sjCRY-DASH), we deduced that its open reading frame was 1779 bp long and encoded 592 amino acids. sjCRY-DASH transcription was rapidly upregulated within 30 min in response to blue light and exhibited 24 h periodicity with different photoperiods. Moreover, sjCRY-DASH maintained the same periodicity in suitable growth temperature, suggesting a close relationship between this periodicity and circadian rhythm regulation. Novel-m3234-5p, which was targeted to sjCRY-DASH, decreased with increasing sjCRY-DASH transcription, acting as a negative modulator of sjCRY-DASH. Six long non-coding RNAs classified as long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) exhibited co-expression with sjCRY-DASH. A miRNA sjCRY DASH lincRNA network was consequently identified. By predicting the endogenous competing mRNAs of novel-m3234-5p, we found that sjCRY-DASH indirectly participated in the regulation of DNA damage repair, protein synthesis and processing, and actin transport. In conclusion, our results revealed that non-coding RNAs participate in the regulation of sjCRY-DASH, which played vital roles in the growth and early development of S. japonica

    Fabrication of ultra-thin nanostructured bimetallic foils by Accumulative Roll Bonding and Asymmetric Rolling

    This paper reports a new technique that combines the features of Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) and Asymmetric Rolling (AR). This technique has been developed to enable production of ultra-thin bimetallic foils. Initially, 1.5 mm thick AA1050 and AA6061 foils were roll-bonded using ARB at 2006C, with 50% reduction. The resulting 1.5 mm bimetallic foil was subsequently thinned to 0.04 mm through four AR passes at room temperature. The speed ratio between the upper and lower AR rolls was 151.3. The tensile strength of the bimetallic foil was seen to increase with reduction in thickness. The ductility of the foil was seen to reduce upon decreasing the foil thickness from 1.5 mm to 0.14 mm, but increase upon further reduction in thickness from 0.14 mm to 0.04 mm. The grain size was about 140 nm for the AA6061 layer and 235 nm for the AA1050 layer, after the third AR pass

    Evaluation of Comprehensive Emergency Capacity to Urban Flood Disaster: An Example from Zhengzhou City in Henan Province, China

    In the context of climate change and urbanization, increasing flood disasters leads to severe losses and impacts on urban inhabitants. In order to enhance urban capacity to cope with floods and reduce losses, the comprehensive emergency-response capacity to flood disaster (CERCF) was studied in Zhengzhou City, which is seriously affected by floods. Firstly, the evaluation index system of flood emergency capacity was constructed from three aspects, including pre-disaster prevention capacity, during-disaster disposal capacity and post-disaster recovery capacity. Secondly, the weight of each index was calculated by the combination of the entropy weight method and the coefficient of variation method, and the evaluation model was established by the comprehensive index method. Thirdly, the CERCF of Zhengzhou City was classified into three grades by the Jenks natural-breakpoint classification method. Finally, the contribution model was used to reveal the contribution factors of flood emergency capacity in Zhengzhou city. The following beneficial conclusions were drawn: (1) The overall CERCF of Zhengzhou City was on a low level. The proportions of the study area at low, medium and high levels were 58.33%, 33.33% and 8.34%, respectively. Spatially, the CERCF was high in central regions and low in in the west and east parts of Zhengzhou City. (2) It was found that PDPC and PDRC made the greatest contribution, while DDDC has a relatively low contribution degree

    Glutamate Dehydrogenase Functions in Glutamic Acid Metabolism and Stress Resistance in Pyropia haitanensis

    Pyropia haitanensis is an important laver species in China. Its quality traits are closely related to the content of glutamic acid. Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) is a crucial enzyme in the glutamic acid metabolism. In this study, two GDH genes from P. haitanensis, PhGDH1 and PhGDH2, were cloned and successfully expressed in Escherichia coli. The in vitro enzyme activity assay demonstrated that the catalytic activity of PhGDHs is mainly in the direction of ammonium assimilation. The measured Km values of PhGDH1 for NADH, (NH4)2SO4, and α-oxoglutarate were 0.12, 4.99, and 0.16 mM, respectively, while the corresponding Km values of PhGDH2 were 0.02, 3.98, and 0.104 mM, respectively. Site-directed mutagenesis results showed that Gly193 and Thr361 were important catalytic residues for PhGDH2. Moreover, expression levels of both PhGDHs were significantly increased under abiotic stresses. These results suggest that PhGDHs can convert α-oxoglutarate to glutamic acid, and enhance the flavor and stress resistance of P. haitanensis
