What is College For? The Future of American Education
In this centerpiece lecture for A Moveable Feast, Delbanco will argue that as the commercialization of American higher education accelerates, more and more students are coming to college with the narrow aim of obtaining a pre-professional credential. Delbanco will illustrate how a traditional four-year college experience— an exploratory time for students to discover their passions and test ideas and values with the help of teachers and peers—is in danger of becoming a thing of the past. This talk will encourage us to remember why making a strong liberal arts education available to as many young people as possible remains central to America’s democratic promise.https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/armstrong-moveable-feast/1004/thumbnail.jp
Opening Plenary: What is College For?
At a time of rising public anxiety about the cost and value of liberal education, Andrew Delbanco, author of College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be, will speak about the past, present, and future of a distinctive institution: the American college.
How can we help students become active citizens and fulfilled human beings? How can we know if a college education is effective—and to what end? Educators must help to frame and answer these urgent questions; otherwise others will do it for us
