<i>Chirotherium barthii </i>Kaup 1835 from the Triassic of the Isle of Arran, Scotland

The mould of a track from SE Arran, and several in situ trackways and individual tracks, as well as a partial trackway on a loose block of Triassic sandstone, from western Arran, represent the first verifiable fossil tracks of Chirotherium from the Triassic of Scotland and support a Scythian (Lower Triassic) age for the base of the Auchenhew Beds. The grouping of the I–IV toes with toe V behind and lateral to the group is characteristic of Chirotherium-like tracks. A comparison with European and American Triassic trackways suggests that the tracks belong to the species Chirotherium barthii Kaup, 1835, first described from Hildburghausen, Germany

Spiritual Liberation or Religious Discipline: The Religious Right’s Effects on Incarcerated Women

The history of the prison system in the US is inextricably linked to Christianity. Penitentiary shares its root word, penitence, with repentance. Quakers and Congregationalists started the very first prisons because they viewed the corporal punishment of that time to be cruel (Graber 20). Even today, prisons are required to hire chaplains to make sure incarcerated people have the freedom to practice religion inside of the prison. The largest volunteer group serving incarcerated people is Prison Fellowship, an arm of the Religious Right which began in the 1970s and is now the largest faith based group of its kind1 (Prison Fellowship “Benefits”). Under the umbrella of Prison Fellowship, a pre-release program called InnerChange Freedom Initiative was developed with the specific goal of transforming incarcerated men in order to lower recidivism rates. The Religious Right claims to have positive effects on incarcerated people beyond cultivating spirituality, such as better rehabilitation and lower recidivism. However, their claims have not withstood scientific scrutiny. This begs the question, what are the effects of the Religious Right’s programming inside of prisons? The US prison system, created with the intent of protecting society from criminals, was developed primarily by straight, white, Christian men who intended the system to be for men. Study of efflorescence forming process on cementitious materials // Etude du processus de formation des efflorescences sur des matériaux cimentaires

International audienceEfflorescence is a white deposit of calcium carbonate on the surface of cementitious materials. It appears under specific climatic conditions. Besides the aesthetic problems, an important economical problem also exists, especially for colored materials. Indeed, this phenomenon is a cause for rejection of products by customers. The aims of the study presented herein are to understand the mechanisms involved and identify the main parameters which control efflorescence formation. A procedure was previously performed to produce primary efflorescence in a climatic chamber. As pozzolans are frequently used in order to decrease the intensity of efflorescence, substitution of cement by different pozzolans was studied. This latest research allowed the Authors to underline which parameters were modified by the substitutions and to link decreases in the intensity of efflorescence with those modifications. // Les efflorescences forment un dépôt blanc de carbonate de calcium à la surface de matériaux cimentaires. Elles apparaissent pour des conditions climatiques spécifiques. Au delà du problème esthétique, un important problème économique intervient car ce phénomène peut être la cause du rejet d'un produit par les clients. Les objectifs de l'étude sont la compréhension des mécanismes et l'identification des paramètres principaux qui contrôlent la formation d'efflorescences. Au préalable, un test a été mis au point dans une chambre climatique pour reproduire des efflorescences. Comme les pouzzolanes sont souvent utilisées pour atténuer les efflorescences, la substitution du ciment par différentes pouzzolanes a été étudiée. Cette étude a permis d'identifier les paramètres affectés par ces substitutions et de relier ces modifications à l'atténuation des efflorescences

The impact of peripheral arterial disease on patients with mechanical circulatory support.

Background: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are indicated as bridging or destination therapy for patients with advanced (Stage D) heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Due to the clustering of the mutual risk factors, HFrEF patients have a high prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This, along with the fact that continuous flow LVAD influence shear stress on the vasculature, can further deteriorate the PAD. Methods: We queried the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2002-2014) to identify the burden of pre-existing PAD cases, its association with LVAD, in-hospital mortality, and other complications of LVAD. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test. Results: A total of 20,817 LVAD patients, comprising of 1,625 (7.8%) PAD and 19,192 (91.2%) non-PAD patients were included in the study. The odds of in-hospital mortality in PAD patients were significantly higher compared to non-PAD group (OR 1.29, CI, 1.07-1.55, P = 0.007). The PAD group had significantly higher adjusted odds as compared to non-PAD group for acute myocardial infarction (aOR 1.29; 95% CI, 1.07-1.55, P = 0.007), major bleeding requiring transfusion (aOR, 1.286; 95% CI, 1.136-1.456, P \u3c 0.001), vascular complications (aOR, 2.360; 95% CI, 1.781-3.126, P \u3c 0.001), surgical wound infections (aOR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.17-1.94, P = 0.002), thromboembolic complications (aOR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.36-2.10, P \u3c 0.001), implant-related complications (aOR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.19-1.80, P \u3c 0.001), and acute renal failure (aOR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.12-1.43, P \u3c 0.001). Conclusion: PAD patients can have high LVAD associated mortality as compared to non-PAD
