Critical temperature of pair condensation in a dilute Bose gas with spin-orbit coupling

We study the Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pairing state of a two-component Bose gas with a symmetric spin-orbit coupling. In the dilute limit at low temperatures, this system is essentially a dilute gas of diatomic molecules. We compute the effective mass of the molecule and find that it is anisotropic in momentum space. The critical temperature of the pairing state is about eight times smaller than the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition temperature of an ideal Bose gas with the same density.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

PurposeTo investigate the relationship between food insecurity and cognitive decline among elderly Americans.MethodsUtilizing NHANES 2011–2014 data, we examined cognitive function via the Immediate Recall Test (IRT), Delayed Recall Test (DRT), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and assessed food security through the US Food Security Survey Module. Multiple regression models were used to adjust for demographic and health variables.ResultsFood insecurity demonstrated a significant association with lower cognitive function scores. The effects of food insecurity on cognitive function were moderated by factors such as smoking and alcohol use, indicating a direct influence of food insecurity on cognitive decline.ConclusionThis study underscores the importance of food security for cognitive health in the elderly and advocates for targeted interventions to address nutritional disparities and enhance cognitive functioning in aging populations

“A stitch in time saves nine” : managing congenital nephrotic syndrome in resource-limited circumstances

We report a case of congenital nephrotic syndrome. Our patient presented with sepsis-like illness and acute kidney injury during the neonatal period. Subsequent urine analysis showed persistent heavy proteinuria with concomitant hypoalbuminaemia and clinical anasarca. Screening for congenital infections was negative. Diuresis was initially induced with daily albumin infusion. Subsequently, administration of furosemide combined with amiloride was adopted as albumin-sparing strategies. Both angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitor and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs were started after 4 weeks of life. Such treatment strategies resulted in a significant reduction in the need for albumin infusion, thus allowing better preservation of the venous estate and improving quality of life with a reduced need for inpatient care

Abstract Purpose This study aimed to assess the relationship between A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and cognitive impairment among older adults in the United States. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed cognitive function in 2,752 individuals aged 60 and older using data from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Cognitive assessments were conducted using the Immediate Recall Test (IRT), Delayed Recall Test (DRT), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). A Body Shape Index (ABSI) was calculated from waist circumference (WC), weight, and height. The relationship between ABSI and cognitive outcomes was examined through multifactorial linear regression, smooth curve fitting, and subgroup and interaction analyses. Results With complete data, 2752 persons 60 and older participated in the study. After adjusting for covariables, these results showed statistically significant negative relationships between ABSI, IRT, and DSST scores. The negative correlation between DSST and ABSI is more substantial in males than females. There is less of a negative link between ABSI, AFT, and DSST among drinkers who consume 12 or more drinks annually compared to those who consume less. Furthermore, compared to individuals without high blood pressure(HBP), those who suffered HBP showed a more significant negative connection between ABSI and AFT. Conclusion Lower cognitive function was linked to higher ABSI

Predictive value of ELWI combined with sRAGE/esRAGE levels in the prognosis of critically ill patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition. Accurate judgement of the disease progression is essential for controlling the condition in ARDS patients. We investigated whether changes in the level of serum sRAGE/esRAGE could predict the 28-day mortality of ICU patients with ARDS. A total of 83 ARDS patients in the ICU of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University from January 2021 to June 2022 were consecutively enrolled in this study. Demographic data, primary diagnosis and comorbidities were obtained. Multiple scoring systems, real-time monitoring systems, and biological indicators were determined within 6 h of admission. The clinical parameters for survival status of the ARDS patients were identified by multivariate logistic regression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was employed to verify the accuracy of the prognosis of the related parameters. The admission level of sRAGE was significantly higher in the nonsurvival group than in the survival group (p  0.05). Model C (esRAGE + sRAGE) was proven to have no significance because it had a predictive value similar to that of the serum levels of esRAGE (Z = 0.993, p = 0.351) or sRAGE (Z = 1.116, p = 0.265) alone. Subsequently, Model D (sRAGE + esRAGE + ELWI) showed the best 28-day mortality predictive value with a cut-off value of 0.426 (AUC 0.841; p < 0.001), and Model A (sRAGE + ELWI) had a cut-off value of 0.401 (AUC 0.820; p < 0.001), followed by sRAGE (AUC 0.704, p = 0.004), esRAGE (AUC 0.717, p = 0.002), and ELWI (AUC 0.637, p = 0.028). In addition, there was no statistically significant difference between Model A and Model D (Z = 0.966, p = 0.334). The admission level of sRAGE was higher in the nonsurvival group, while the serum esRAGE level showed the opposite trend. Model A and Model D could be used as reliable combined prediction models for predicting the 28-day mortality of ARDS patients

A Versatile Strategy for Shish-Kebab-like Multi-heterostructured Chalcogenides and Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

A series of multi-heterostructured metal chalcogenides (CdS-Te, NiS/CdS-Te, and MoS2/CdS-Te) with a surprising shish-kebab-like structure have been synthesized via a one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis of dithiocarbamate precursors in ethylene glycol. Subsequently, CdS-Te composites were exploited as a self-sacrificial template to craft various CdS-Te@(Pt, Pd) multi-heterostructures. Highly uniform dispersion and intimate interactions between CdS and multicomponent cocatalysts, together with improved separation of photogenerated carriers due to the presence of Te nanotubes (NTs) and trace CdTe, enable CdS-based heterostructured photocatalysts to exhibit greatly enhanced efficiency and stability in the photocatalytic production of H2. Thorough morphological characterizations revealed that the growth of metal sulfide/Te heterostructures originates from the growth of Te tubes, which is likely governed by diffusion-limited depletion of the Te precursor and the dissolution–crystallization process of Te seeds followed by the formation of metal sulfide kebabs
