New product development in an emerging economy: analysing the role of supplier involvement practices by using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo technique
The research question is whether the positive relationship found between supplier involvement practices and new product development performances in developed economies also holds in emerging economies. The role of supplier involvement practices in new product development performance is yet to be substantially investigated in the emerging economies (other than China). This premise was examined by distributing a survey instrument (Jayaram’s (2008) published survey instrument that has been utilised in developed economies) to Malaysian manufacturing companies. To gauge the relationship between the supplier involvement practices and new product development (NPD) project performance of 146 companies, structural equation modelling was adopted. Our findings prove that supplier involvement practices have a significant positive impact on NPD project performance in an emerging economy with respect to quality objectives, design objectives, cost objectives, and “time-to-market” objectives. Further analysis using the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, yielding a more credible and feasible differentiation, confirmed these results (even in the case of an emerging economy) and indicated that these practices have a 28% impact on variance of NPD project performance. This considerable effect implies that supplier involvement is a must have, although further research is needed to identify the contingencies for its practices
Excavating the role of NPEs in the innovation process: Did we start a mission possible?
The past decades have seen the rise of so-called Non-Producing/Practicing Entities (NPEs). NPEs do not use patents for appropriating own R&D investments necessary for developing technologies embedded in own products or services but solely focus on exploiting, enforcing or monetising patents. One might suspect that this behaviour impacts the innovation processes of firms and technological developments in different industrial sectors. Interviews with a panel of experts from a European country reveal most notably that the emergence of NPEs has changed the awareness of firms’ management towards patents and the way of managing them. The results also indicate that the contemporary situation is still diffuse and immature, so that their full impact is difficult to understand, even from an interpretivists’ perspective.This research was supported by a Small Research Grant from the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.This is the accepted manuscript. The use and effectiveness of the eLib subject gateways: a preliminary investigation
Internet subject gateways were set up under the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) in order to address some of the problems of searching the Internet which have been identified by information professionals, i.e. locating relevant, good quality information. This preliminary study examines the extent to which academics in two universities use three eLib subject gateways (EEVL, OMNI and SOSIG). The results are generally encouraging for the eLib programme, but it is necessary for the gateways to be more effectively promoted. The study also found that academics do not have the same misgivings about the general search engines as the information professionals and seem to use them more readily than the gateways
Transcriptome Analysis in Spleen Reveals Differential Regulation of Response to Newcastle Disease Virus in Two Chicken Lines.
Enhancing genetic resistance of chickens to Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) provides a promising way to improve poultry health, and to alleviate poverty and food insecurity in developing countries. In this study, two inbred chicken lines with different responses to NDV, Fayoumi and Leghorn, were challenged with LaSota NDV strain at 21 days of age. Through transcriptome analysis, gene expression in spleen at 2 and 6 days post-inoculation was compared between NDV-infected and control groups, as well as between chicken lines. At a false discovery rate <0.05, Fayoumi chickens, which are relatively more resistant to NDV, showed fewer differentially expressed genes (DEGs) than Leghorn chickens. Several interferon-stimulated genes were identified as important DEGs regulating immune response to NDV in chicken. Pathways predicted by IPA analysis, such as "EIF-signaling", "actin cytoskeleton organization nitric oxide production" and "coagulation system" may contribute to resistance to NDV in Fayoumi chickens. The identified DEGs and predicted pathways may contribute to differential responses to NDV between the two chicken lines and provide potential targets for breeding chickens that are more resistant to NDV
A study on the minimum number of loci required for genetic evaluation using a finite locus model
For a finite locus model, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods can be used to estimate the conditional mean of genotypic values given phenotypes, which is also known as the best predictor (BP). When computationally feasible, this type of genetic prediction provides an elegant solution to the problem of genetic evaluation under non-additive inheritance, especially for crossbred data. Successful application of MCMC methods for genetic evaluation using finite locus models depends, among other factors, on the number of loci assumed in the model. The effect of the assumed number of loci on evaluations obtained by BP was investigated using data simulated with about 100 loci. For several small pedigrees, genetic evaluations obtained by best linear prediction (BLP) were compared to genetic evaluations obtained by BP. For BLP evaluation, used here as the standard of comparison, only the first and second moments of the joint distribution of the genotypic and phenotypic values must be known. These moments were calculated from the gene frequencies and genotypic effects used in the simulation model. BP evaluation requires the complete distribution to be known. For each model used for BP evaluation, the gene frequencies and genotypic effects, which completely specify the required distribution, were derived such that the genotypic mean, the additive variance, and the dominance variance were the same as in the simulation model. For lowly heritable traits, evaluations obtained by BP under models with up to three loci closely matched the evaluations obtained by BLP for both purebred and crossbred data. For highly heritable traits, models with up to six loci were needed to match the evaluations obtained by BLP
On the Optical Activity of Steroidal 5,7-Dienes
Circular dichroism (CD) data are reported of a series of 9,10-
stereoisomeric steroidal 5,7-dienes. In general the effects in the
longest wavelength transition (270-280 nm) are large (Mm" 10---30)
and consignate with respect to the diene helicity rule. The magnitude
of the CD appears to vary markedly with the substituent at C-3 and at C-17, and with solvent. In the case of the 9a,10p-H dienes, variation of solvent and temperature can affect even the sign of the Cotton effect. This is explained from a change of geometry of the diene ring: solvation, substitution and temperature can affect the average geometry of the ring including the values of the angle of twist of the diene (ef> (6-7». The relevance of the observed chiroptical data for the theoretical description of the optical activity in the So-+ Sl transition of homoannular cisoid dienes is discussed
Enhanced piezoelectric properties of (110)-oriented PbZr1−xTixO3 epitaxial thin films on silicon substrates at shifted morphotropic phase boundary
Piezoelectrical, ferroelectrical, and structural properties of epitaxial pseudocubic (110)pc oriented 500 nm thick PbZr1−xTixO3 thin films, prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (001) silicon substrates, were measured as a function of composition. The dependence of the measurement data on the Ti content is explained by an abrupt transition from the rhombohedral r-phase to the tetragonal (c/a) 45 phase for x ≈ 0.6, indicating a shift of the Morphotropic Phase Boundary to this value, where the effective piezoelectric coefficient e3 1 ,eff and dielectric constant ε33 ,eff reach their maximum values. These findings are of great significance for Si-based piezo-micro electro mechanical systems, in particular energy harvesters. The largest value of the figure-of-merit for such devices was found for x = 0.6, FOM=24.0 GP
Enhancing the Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopic Visualization of Lucifer Yellow Filled Cells in Whole-Mounted Tissue
The laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) is an extremely useful tool that allows fluorescently labelled cells to be visualized in whole-mount preparations. This is particularly advantageous, for example, in studying the dendritic trees of neurons with respect to their environment.
One of the most popular, and easiest, ways to visualize a cell is to inject it intracellularly with the fluorophore Lucifer Yellow (LY). However, the argon gas lasers of most LSCM\u27s are not well matched to the excitation spectrum of aqueous LY. When this largely inappropriate excitation is combined with standard filters, designed for fluorescein fluorescence rather than Lucifer Yellow, the resulting image is poor.
We report that clearing LY-injected neurons in methyl salicylate and mounting them in Entellan, a non-aqueous medium of high refractive index, enhances their visualization on a Bio-Rad LSCM with standard fluorescein (FITC) filters to an unexpected degree. This technique also leads to a substantial reduction in photobleaching
