A qualitatively model to describe the influence of boundaries on the energy density by considering the energy leakage, and its extension on the system ventilation and fire fighting systems

    Get PDF
Abstract In this paper constitutive models based on physical laws are derived that allow the energy flows and the release of energy to be described and predicted for fires in enclosed spaces and tunnels in particular. The models are generally formulated but are also specifically formulated for practical applications, e.g. for considering the effect of limited burning due to insufficient oxygen supply or the effect of fire fighting systems. The solutions agree with the experimentally obtained results in (Carvel et al, 2001 and Carvel et al, 2005). Accordingly, the methods and solutions derived here can be considered adequately validated

Sensible heat loss from Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) feeding in winter: small calves are not at a thermal disadvantage compared with adult cows

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are large (\u3e200 kg adult body mass) mammalian herbivores that overwinter in the polar regions. Calves are around one-third the body mass of mature females and may be expected to suffer greater thermal stresses in winter compared with adults because the ratio of surface area to volume (SA : vol) is much greater for calves than for adults. We found that during feeding bouts, when animals are fully exposed to environmental conditions, calves did lose sensible (dry) heat more readily than adults (W m(-2)) in still air conditions. However, calves and cows lost less than 2%-6% of their estimated daily digestible energy intake as conductive, convective, and radiant heat losses accumulated during feeding bouts. More important, calves did not lose relatively more heat than larger adults in terms of sensible losses as part of their daily energy intake. Coat surface temperatures were only 2 degrees-5 degrees C above ambient even when air temperature fell to -40 degrees C. Body temperatures recorded deep within the ear canal near the tympanum fluctuated in both cows and calves. Muskoxen combine peripheral heterothermy and an exceptional winter coat to minimize sensible heat loss in winter. These mechanisms appear to have circumvented some of the thermal problems normally associated with a high SA : vol ratio in calves, which reflects the strong selection to conserve energy in winter

The Influence of Dust Formation Modelling on Na I and K I Line Profiles in Substellar Atmospheres

We aim to understand the correlation between cloud formation and alkali line formation in substellar atmospheres. We perform line profile calculations for Na I and K I based on the coupling of our kinetic model for the formation and composition of dust grains with 1D radiative transfer calculations in atmosphere models for brown dwarfs and giant gas planets. The Na I and K I line profiles sensibly depend on the way clouds are treated in substellar atmosphere simulations. The kinetic dust formation model results in the highest pseudo-continuum compared to the limiting cases.Comment: 5 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRA

The Computational Complexity of Knot and Link Problems

We consider the problem of deciding whether a polygonal knot in 3-dimensional Euclidean space is unknotted, capable of being continuously deformed without self-intersection so that it lies in a plane. We show that this problem, {\sc unknotting problem} is in {\bf NP}. We also consider the problem, {\sc unknotting problem} of determining whether two or more such polygons can be split, or continuously deformed without self-intersection so that they occupy both sides of a plane without intersecting it. We show that it also is in NP. Finally, we show that the problem of determining the genus of a polygonal knot (a generalization of the problem of determining whether it is unknotted) is in {\bf PSPACE}. We also give exponential worst-case running time bounds for deterministic algorithms to solve each of these problems. These algorithms are based on the use of normal surfaces and decision procedures due to W. Haken, with recent extensions by W. Jaco and J. L. Tollefson.Comment: 32 pages, 1 figur

Various Improvements to Operate the 1.5GeV HDSM at MAMI

    Get PDF
During the last three years at the 1.5GeV Harmonic Double Sided Microtron HDSM, [1] of MAMI a lot of improvements concerning the longitudinal operation of the accelerator were tested and installed. To monitor the rf power dissipated in the accelerating sections, their cooling water flow and its temperature rise are now continuously logged. Phase calibration measurements of the linacs and the phase intensity monitors p i monitors revealed nonlinearities of the high precision step motor driven waveguide phase shifters. They were recalibrated to deliver precise absolute values. Thereby it is now possible to measure not only the first turn s phase very exactly, but also to determine the linac s rf amplitude within an error of less than 5 using the well known longitudinal dispersion of the bending system. These results are compared to the thermal load measurements. For parity violation experiments the beam energy has to be stabilised to some 10 amp; 8722;6. A dedicated system measuring the time of flight through a bending magnet is now used in routine operation and controls the output energy via the linac phase

The Smelling Principle of Vetiver Oil, Unveiled by Chemical Synthesis

    Get PDF
Vetiver oil, produced on a multiton‐scale from the roots of vetiver grass, is one of the finest and most popular perfumery materials, appearing in over a third of all fragrances. It is a complex mixture of hundreds of molecules and the specific odorant, responsible for its characteristic suave and sweet transparent, woody‐ambery smell, has remained a mystery until today. Herein, we prove by an eleven‐step chemical synthesis, employing a novel asymmetric organocatalytic Mukaiyama–Michael addition, that (+)‐2‐epi‐ziza‐6(13)en‐3‐one is the active smelling principle of vetiver oil. Its olfactory evaluation reveals a remarkable odor threshold of 29 picograms per liter air, responsible for the special sensuous aura it lends to perfumes and the quasi‐pheromone‐like effect it has on perfumers and consumers alike

Loop operators and S-duality from curves on Riemann surfaces

We study Wilson-'t Hooft loop operators in a class of N=2 superconformal field theories recently introduced by Gaiotto. In the case that the gauge group is a product of SU(2) groups, we classify all possible loop operators in terms of their electric and magnetic charges subject to the Dirac quantization condition. We then show that this precisely matches Dehn's classification of homotopy classes of non-self-intersecting curves on an associated Riemann surface--the same surface which characterizes the gauge theory. Our analysis provides an explicit prediction for the action of S-duality on loop operators in these theories which we check against the known duality transformation in several examples.Comment: 41 page

Energy transfer in pendant perylene diimide copolymers

    Get PDF
We report the synthesis, characterisation and polymerisation of two novel asymmetric perylene diimide acrylate monomers. The novel monomers form a sensitiser–acceptor pair capable of undergoing Förster resonance energy transfer, and were incorporated as copolymers with tert-butyl acrylate. The tert-butyl acrylate units act as spacers along the polymer chain allowing high concentrations of dye while mitigating aggregate quenching, leading to persistent fluorescence in the solid state at high concentrations of up to 0.3 M. Analysis of fluorescence kinetics showed efficient energy transfer between the optically dense sensitiser and the lower concentration acceptor luminophores within the polymer. This reduced reabsorption within the material demonstrates that the copolymer-scaffold energy transfer system has potential for use in luminescent solar concentrators
