To assess environmental impacts of hydropower-induced frequent stream variations

Degouy, C. (2010). Relations Between Structure and Efficiency of Polymeric Additives for Drilling Fluids

    No full text
A laboratory study has been undertaken to elucidate the influence of structural parameters of polymer/electrolyte systems commonly used for the formulation of water-based drilling fluids on their performances as filtrate reducers or cuttings dispersion inhibitors. The dependence of properties of bentonite/polymer/electrolyte systems on polymer molecular characteristics has been studied. The results indicate that polymer dimensions which depend on both salinity and polymer molecular weight have a major influence on the efficiency in inhibiting cuttings dispersion. Filtration properties of the investigated model fluids have been found to be strongly dependent on polymer/bentonite interactions : an increase in molecular weight of polymeric additives can induce clay particle flocculation resulting in poor filtration control whereas an increase in polymer negative charges improves bentonite dispersion and thus filtration properties

Enhancing Structural Annotation of Yeast Genomes with RNA-Seq Data.

    No full text
The number of fully sequenced genomes of yeasts is dramatically increasing but both structural and functional annotation quality are usually neglected, as most frequently based on automatic annotation transfer tools from reference genomes. RNA sequencing technologies offer the possibility to better characterize yeast transcriptomes and to correct or improve the prediction of mRNA, ncRNA, or miscellaneous RNA. We describe a computational approach to enhance structural annotation of yeast genomes based on RNA-Seq data exploitation. The proposed pipeline is primarily based on read mapping with TopHat2. Mapping outputs are then used for various applications such as: (1) validation of exon-exon junctions of predicted transcripts, (2) definition of new transcribed features, (3) prediction of 3' UTR, and (4) identification of extra features absent from the genome assembly. We strongly encourage curators to proceed to a manual validation and editing of the reference genome. Releasing genomes with high-quality annotation is an important issue, as they will be considered as references for further predictions

Sweet and sour potential of yeast from the Yarrowia clade

    No full text
The food industry is witnessing a growing demand for food additives. Microbial fermentation is an attractive way to produce them using microorganisms, including the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. Twelve species of the Yarrowia clade were screened for erythritol, mannitol and citric acid production from pure glycerol, glucose or fructose in four different media. During shake-flask cultures, only Y. lipolytica was able to secrete citric acid. Glycerol was found to be the best substrate for erythritol and mannitol biosynthesis by all the species. The six best candidate species for sweetener biosynthesis were cultivated in bioreactors. Up to 69.8 g dm−3 of total polyols with a yield of 0.59 g g−1 was obtained for Candida oslonensis, the best sweetener producer. It secreted 44.6 g dm−3 of erythritol (QEry = 1.16 g dm−3 h−1 and YEry/S = 0.4 g g−1) and 34 g dm−3 of mannitol (0.29 g g−1). Additionally, Candida hollandica and Yarrowia divulgata represent promising species for which media composition and culture parameters still have to be optimized
