The internal division of the Pliocene Lillo Formation : correlation between Cone Penetration Tests and lithostratigraphic type sections

The highly fossiliferous Lillo Formation (Pliocene, southern margin North Sea Basin) is formally subdivided in five lithostratigraphical members. While these members are generally relatively easily identifiable in outcrops, they are much more difficultly identifiable in boreholes, hampering geological studies. In the Port of Antwerp area, however, an already existing and dense network of Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) provides an alternative and additional tool for the recognition of the different lithologies in the Lillo Formation. CPTs reveal a clear geotechnical threefold division of the Formation. The lower and upper intervals, herein named CPT units Li-A and Li-C respectively, are characterized by high q(c) and low R-f values and correspond to shell-bearing, sandy lithologies. CPT unit Li-A can further be divided in a shelly basal subunit Li-Al and an overlying sandy subunit Li-A2. CPT units Li-A and Li-C are separated by CPT unit Li-B characterized by low q(c) and high R-f values which correspond to more clayey lithologies. Four CPTs selected in close vicinity of four well-documented outcrops, some of them being formal stratotypes for the Formation and some of its members, allowed to correlate the geotechnical units with detailed lithological descriptions as well as the formal stratigraphy. CPT unit Li-Al can be correlated to the Luchtbal Member and the basal part of the Oorderen Member, whereas unit Li-A2 corresponds to the superjacent sandy body of the Oorderen Member. The overlying CPT units Li-B and Li-C seem to correlate differently in different outcrops to the clayey upper part of the Oorderen Member, Kruisschans and Merksem Members. This inconsistency hinders any direct correlation between the geotechnical stratigraphy and lithostratigraphy of the Members of the Lillo Formation. Further research is needed to find the reason(s) for this inconsistency

Emotion dysregulation as cross-disorder trait in child psychiatry predicting quality of life and required treatment duration

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation (ED) is increasingly under investigation as a cross-disorder trait, and is by some considered as the core feature in mental disorders. The aims of this study were to scrutinize the overlapping and distinct characteristics of ED for internalizing, externalizing and neurodevelopmental disorders and to identify the most pertinent ED characteristics to guide clinicians in treatment choice.METHODS: Information on clinical diagnosis (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder, Anxiety and Mood Disorders), ED (measured by the CBCL-Emotion Dysregulation Index), Quality of Life (Qol, measured by the Kidscreen-27), and treatment duration (measured by Electronic Health Records) was retrieved from two large samples of toddlers (1.5-5  year old; N  = 1,544) and school aged children (6-18 year old; N  = 7,259). Frequency scores and logistic regression were used to study symptom profiles of ED, as measured with CBCL-EDI, across all disorders. Linear regression was used to determine the predictive value of ED (CBCL-EDI total score) regarding QoL and treatment duration in addition to-and in interaction with-clinical diagnosis. RESULTS: Across disorders, equal levels of total ED were found, which predicted lower QoL and a longer treatment duration in addition to clinical diagnosis. The majority of items (11/15 and 16/18) were of equal relevance to the disorders; items that were not, largely reflected disorder specific DSM definitions (i.e., externalizing symptoms in ODD/CD and internalizing symptoms in Anxiety and Mood disorders).CONCLUSION: ED is a clinically useful cross-disorder trait to predict severity of impairment as well as required treatment duration. In addition, ED is largely composed of shared features across disorders, with certain disorder specific colored elements.</p

Linkage and continuity of care after release from prison : an evaluation of Central Registration Points for drug users in Belgium

Purpose This paper aims to report the findings of an evaluation study concerning the Central Registration Points (CRPs) for drug users in Belgian prisons. CRPs support drug users to link with community-based services. Design/methodology/approach The study applied a multi-method approach that involved an exploratory literature review; a secondary analysis of the CRPs' databases; a qualitative study of the perceptions of a diverse sample of stakeholders with regard to the functioning of CRPs; and a prospective registration study. Findings One-third of the clients never attended an outpatient or residential substance abuse service before prison entry. This illustrates that the CRPs managed to reach clients who were not previously reached by (substance abuse) treatment services. All interviewed actors emphasized the added value of the CRPs in terms of informing, contacting, motivating and referring prisoners with a substance abuse problem. Practical implications Based on the research findings, two issues seem to be of paramount importance in the successful practice of CRPs: the confidentiality and specific expertise on (substance abuse) treatment. Given the complex situation of drug users in prison, an independent positioning and categorical assistance with drug-specific expertise seem to be essential. Originality/value CRPs can be considered to be one of the "building blocks" that contribute to high-quality care and continuity of care for drugs users in detention

A Late Roman gold neck ring with inscription from Walcheren (prov. Zeeland/NL)

In 2016, a Late Roman gold neck ring with inscription was found in Veere, part of the former island of Walcheren. The inscription reads VICTORINVSFVIMB and is interpreted as «made by Victorinus, weighing 6 ounce, ordered (or controlled) by MB», which might mean Ministrator Barbaricariae, the master of the workshop where barbarian gift items (gold and silver jewellery and vessels) and/or weapons were made. The object is dated to the first half of the 4th century, based on stylistic parallels and comparable inscriptions on other artefacts, as well as on the alloy composition, which resembles monetary gold of the period 220-346. Data on the composition of the object results from pXRF measurement of the neck ring and 25 gold coins as a comparison. The discovery of the neck ring draws our attention to Late Roman activity at the Zeeland coast, which was unclear until now, but ties in with scanty evidence gathered before

A Matrix-free Model Order Reduction Scheme For Vibro-acoustic Systems Including Complex Noise Control Treatments

    No full text
This paper presents a Matrix-Free rational Krylov interpolation model order reduction framework as an efficient tool to predict vibro-acoustic field variables of interest in complex systems including (multi-)layers of damping treatments. The model order reduction scheme does not require knowledge on the underlying mathematical model structure and works based on given transfer functions between the system inputs and outputs. Hence, it can just as well be considered as a black box model, not requiring access to the system matrices and thus justifying the naming “Matrix-Free”. The method can be applied to any type of problem, being bounded or unbounded, damped or undamped. A strategy is proposed to iteratively expand the reduced order model until the requested accuracy is achieved. The method allows to overcome the computational cost of highly detailed vibro-acoustic models with frequency-dependent noise control treatments which require a high number of degrees of freedom to accurately capture the different variables of interest given the complex near-field dynamics. The potential of the method is illustrated on different examples, this paper specifically focuses on a car interior.status: publishe
