    Deradicalization: not soft, but strategic

    "The present article considers deradicalization programs. It is observed that deradicalization is primarily a strategic tool, that it was already used in the 1970s, that it can occur spontaneously, and that is should be differentiated from physical disengagement. An evaluation of existing deradicalization programs lead to the propositions that 1) deradicalization programs in the area of right-wing extremism primarily focus on changing behavior not thoughts, that 2) currently there is insufficient insight in what motives people to deradicalize, and 3) that insights from psychology are still insufficiently used to increase effectiveness of deradicalization. Research can make an important contribution to optimize efficiency of deradicalization for counterterrorism purposes." [author's abstract

    Radicalization and Mass Violence from a Beckerian Perspective: Conceptual and Empirical Considerations

    This paper considers the conceptual and empirical merits of Ernest Becker’s analysis of radicalization and mass violence. Starting with several cases showing a clear link between exposure to traumatic events and violence, Ernest Becker’s idea that mass violence should be understood as an attempt to overcome the fear of death is examined in the light of recent experimental social psychological research, field research on the attitudinal effects of threatening situations, clinical modeling of the relation between fear and anger, and insights from neuroscience. Becker’s ideas, in conjunction with empirical research, may contribute to an understanding of how humans can behave under extreme circumstances

    Security-by-experiment: lessons from responsible deployment in cyberspace

    Conceiving new technologies as social experiments is a means to discuss responsible deployment of technologies that may have unknown and potentially harmful side-effects. Thus far, the uncertain outcomes addressed in the paradigm of new technologies as social experiments have been mostly safetyrelated, meaning that potential harm is caused by the design plus accidental events in the environment. In some domains, such as cyberspace, dversarial agents (attackers)may be at least as important when it comes to undesirable effects of deployed technologies. In such cases, conditions for responsible experimentation may need to be implemented differently, as attackers behave strategically rather than probabilistically. In this contribution, we outline how adversarial aspects are already taken into account in technology deployment in the field of cyber security, and what the paradigm of new technologies as social experiments can learn from this. In particular, we show the importance of adversarial roles in social experiments with new technologies

    Comparison of moving boundary and finite-volume heat exchangers models in the Modelica language

    When modelling low capacity energy systems such as a small (5–150 kWel) organic Rankine cycle unit, the governing dynamics are mainly concentrated in the heat exchangers. As a consequence, accuracy and simulation speed of the higher level system model mainly depend on the heat exchanger model formulation. In particular, the modelling of thermodynamic systems characterized by evaporation or condensation, requires heat exchanger models capable of handling phase transitions. To this aim, the finite volume (FV) and the moving boundary (MB) approaches are the most widely used. The two models are developed and included in the open-source ThermoCycle Modelica library. In this contribution a comparison between the two approaches is performed. Their performance is tested in terms of model integrity and accuracy during transient conditions. Furthermore the models are used to simulate the evaporator of an ORC system and their responses are validated against experimental data collected on an 11 kWel ORC power unit
