Motion-base simulator study of control of an externally blown flap STOL transport aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during landing approach
A moving-base simulator investigation of the problems of recovery and landing of a STOL aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during final approach was made. The approaches were made at 75 knots along a 6 deg glide slope. The engine was failed at low altitude and the option to go around was not allowed. The aircraft was simulated with each of three control systems, and it had four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines exhausting against large triple-slotted wing flaps to produce additional lift. A virtual-image out-the-window television display of a simulated STOL airport was operating during part of the investigation. Also, a simple heads-up flight director display superimposed on the airport landing scene was used by the pilots to make some of the recoveries following an engine failure. The results of the study indicated that the variation in visual cues and/or motion cues had little effect on the outcome of a recovery, but they did have some effect on the pilot's response and control patterns

Isoscalar dipole strength in ^{208}_{82}Pb_{126}: the spurious mode and the strength in the continuum
Isoscalar dipole (compression) mode is studied first using schematic
harmonic-oscillator model and, then, the self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) and
random phase approximation (RPA) solved in coordinate space. Taking ^{208}Pb
and the SkM* interaction as a numerical example, the spurious component and the
strength in the continuum are carefully examined using the sum rules. It is
pointed out that in the continuum calculation one has to use an extremely fine
radial mesh in HF and RPA in order to separate, with good accuracy, the
spurious component from intrinsic excitations.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure
Stability of Solid State Reaction Fronts
We analyze the stability of a planar solid-solid interface at which a
chemical reaction occurs. Examples include oxidation, nitridation, or silicide
formation. Using a continuum model, including a general formula for the
stress-dependence of the reaction rate, we show that stress effects can render
a planar interface dynamically unstable with respect to perturbations of
intermediate wavelength

Hundreds of books and articles and a plethora of executive seminars describe what leadership is and propose strategies for what effective leaders do. Most of these writings and presentations, however, focus on business, with much less information available about how to lead schools. In addition, there is a diversity of opinions about what makes leaders effective. This article suggests that it is possible to extract, reframe, and apply the best of what is known about leadership to help principals be more successful. Moreover, if principals are successful, teachers also are positioned to be successful, with the ultimate impact being successful student learning
Geriatric Assessment of Older Adults With Cancer During Unplanned Hospitalizations: An Opportunity in Disguise
Geriatric assessment (GA) is an important tool for management of older cancer patients; however, GA research has been performed primarily in the outpatient setting. The primary objective of this study was to determine feasibility of GA during an unplanned hospital stay. Secondary objectives were to describe deficits found with GA, to assess whether clinicians recognized and addressed deficits, and to determine 30-day readmission rates

Structure and oxidation kinetics of the Si(100)-SiO2 interface
We present first-principles calculations of the structural and electronic
properties of Si(001)-SiO2 interfaces. We first arrive at reasonable structures
for the c-Si/a-SiO2 interface via a Monte-Carlo simulated annealing applied to
an empirical interatomic potential, and then relax these structures using
first-principles calculations within the framework of density-functional
theory. We find a transition region at the interface, having a thickness on the
order of 20\AA, in which there is some oxygen deficiency and a corresponding
presence of sub-oxide Si species (mostly Si^+2 and Si^+3). Distributions of
bond lengths and bond angles, and the nature of the electronic states at the
interface, are investigated and discussed. The behavior of atomic oxygen in
a-SiO2 is also investigated. The peroxyl linkage configuration is found to be
lower in energy than interstitial or threefold configurations. Based on these
results, we suggest a possible mechanism for oxygen diffusion in a-SiO2 that

‘Being Yourself’ in the Electronic Sweatshop: New Forms of Normative Control
This article extends research about high-commitment management practices in tightly controlled work environments typified by the call centre. One promising research avenue suggests that normative management systems in such contexts, involving ‘fun’ exercises and culture programmes, etc., are more about distracting employee attention away from other, more taxing controls. This article develops such an approach by exploring the specific nature and conditions of such distraction. An empirical study of a call centre in which employees were encouraged to ‘just be themselves’ (in relation to lifestyle differences, sexuality, diverse identities, etc.) reveals how the distractions are partly informed by the dysfunctions of existing technical, bureaucratic and conventional cultural controls, all of which homogenize workers. Furthermore, the new regime not only serves to distract employees, but proves instrumental in capturing their sociality, energy and ‘authentic’ or ‘non-work’ personalities as emotional labour. At the same time, it gives rise to some contestation and less individualistic forms of authenticity. These outcomes have wider implications for our understanding of worker autonomy in and around hybrid control systems
