    Student Responsibility Through Building Teacher Capacities

    Bound Yet Free Christian School is an organization committed to a growth mindset. The school’s Board of Directors invests in school improvement efforts, making use of external evaluations and encouraging professional development. Building on the previous external evaluations of the organization, two of the local school board’s resulting initiatives are explicitly addressed in this Organizational Improvement Plan. Making academic success a priority while building teacher capacities in intelligent, evidence-based pedagogies are the goals. A specific focus on assisting student development of responsibility and ownership for their learning is the focal point for improving student learning. This plan seeks to outline a detailed strategy for building teacher capacities in evidence-based practices for improving student responsibility and independence. Such pedagogies include sharing learning goals, metacognitive strategies, assessment for and as learning, and academic press, focusing on the co-responsibility of teachers and students to create and protect a conducive learning environment. Using a Christian servant leadership paradigm, where love serves as the supreme ethic, and with the goal of establishing a culture for continuous improvement, this plan seeks to make use of an 8-step organizational approach to change and then complement that approach with the implementation of a Plan-Do-Study-Act process. In order to initiate this change, the problem of practice, namely, the poor development of ownership and responsibility for learning among many BYFCS students, demonstrates the necessity for creating a sense of urgency among stakeholders. Communication of this plan with stakeholders takes a one-sided messaging approach, providing an evidence-based rationale for its necessity. Various elements of the plan are shared with parents, Board members, staff, and students in order to create a uniform understanding for the vision of change. Particular attention is given to the important role of building a guiding coalition among the teachers to receive initial feedback on the plan, to develop clarity of goals, to maintain focused attention on those goals, and to help ensure the momentum for continuous improvement

    Evaluation of thallium-201 scanning for detection of latent coronary artery disease

    The use of thallium imaging as a noninvasive method to accurately screen shuttle passengers for latent coronary artery disease was investigated. All radionuclide procedures were performed using an Anger type camera with a high resolution collimator. A minimum of 200,000 counts were collected for each image using a 20% window centered on the 69-83 keV X-rays. For the images obtained following injection with the patient at rest, the testing was begun 10 minutes after injection. Injections of TT during exercise were made at a point near the termination of the treadmill procedure as determined by either the appearance of ST segment changes on the electrocardiogram consistant with subendocardial ischemia, the appearance of angina-like chest pain in the patient or fatigue in the patient which required cessation of the test. The severity of heart disease was based on the medical history, physical exam, exercise electrocardiograms, chest X-rays and the coronary arteriogram

    Study of leakage currents in pCVD diamonds as function of the magnetic field

    pCVD diamond sensors are regularly used as beam loss monitors in accelerators by measuring the ionization of the lost particles. In the past these beam loss monitors showed sudden increases in the dark leakage current without beam losses and these erratic leakage currents were found to decrease, if magnetic fields were present. Here we report on a systematic study of leakage currents inside a magnetic field. The decrease of erratic currents in a magnetic field was confirmed. On the contrary, diamonds without erratic currents showed an increase of the leakage current in a magnetic field perpendicular to the electric field for fields up to 0.6T, for higher fields it decreases.     Embedding as a Tool for Language Comparison

    AbstractThis paper addresses the problem of defining a formal tool to compare the expressive power of different concurrent constraint languages. We refine the notion of embedding by adding some "reasonable" conditions, suitable for concurrent frameworks. The new notion, called modular embedding, is used to define a preorder among these languages, representing different degrees of expressiveness. We show that this preorder is not trivial (i.e., it does not collapse into one equivalence class) by proving that Flat CP cannot be embedded into Flat GHC, and that Flat GHC cannot be embedded into a language without communication primitives in the guards, while the converses hold

    Stochastic Feedback and the Regulation of Biological Rhythms

    We propose a general approach to the question of how biological rhythms spontaneously self-regulate, based on the concept of ``stochastic feedback''. We illustrate this approach by considering the neuroautonomic regulation of the heart rate. The model generates complex dynamics and successfully accounts for key characteristics of cardiac variability, including the 1/f1/f power spectrum, the functional form and scaling of the distribution of variations, and correlations in the Fourier phases. Our results suggest that in healthy systems the control mechanisms operate to drive the system away from extreme values while not allowing it to settle down to a constant output.Comment: 15 pages, latex2e using rotate and epsf, with 4 ps figures.
