    Trichinella britovi etiological agent of sylvatic trichinellosis in the Republic of Guinea (West Africa) and a re-evaluation of geographical distribution for encapsulated species in Africa

    In West Africa, Trichinella infection was documented in humans and animals from Senegal in the 1960s, and the biological characters of one isolate showed a lower infectivity to domestic pigs and rodents when compared with that of a Trichinella spiralis pig isolate from Europe. To identify the Trichinella species present in West Africa, a survey was conducted in a total of 160 wild animals in the Republic of Guinea. Three Viverridae, one true civet (Viverra civetta) and two African palm civets (Nandinia binotata) from the Fouta Djallon Massif, Pilimini Subprefecture, were found positive by artificial digestion of muscle samples. Trichinella larvae from these three viverrids were identified as Trichinella britovi and no difference was detected in three examined sequences from these African isolates and the reference strain of T. britovi from Europe, indicating common ancestry, an historically continuous geographic distribution, and recent isolation for African and European populations. The detection of T. britovi in West Africa modifies our knowledge about the distribution of encapsulated species of Trichinella in Africa. Thus, Trichinella nelsoni is now considered to have a distribution limited to the Eastern part of the Afrotropical region from Kenya to South Africa. This provides a plausible explanation for the presence of Trichinella T8 in Namibia and South Africa, and further suggests that T. britovi could be the Trichinella species circulating among wild animals of Northern Africa

    Small ruminant lentivirus genotype B and E interaction: Evidences on the role of Roccaverano strain on reducing proviral load of the challenging CAEV strain.

    Live attenuated vaccines provide the most consistent protective immunity in experimental models of lentivirus infections. In this study we tested the hypothesis that animals infected with a naturally attenuated small ruminant lentivirus field strain of genotype E may control a challenge infection with a virulent strain of the caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV-CO). Within genotype E, Roccaverano strain has been described as attenuated since decreased arthritic pathological indexes were recorded in Roccaverano-infected animals compared to animals of the same breed infected with genotype B strains. Moreover, under natural conditions, animals double-infected with genotypes B and E appear less prone to develop SRLV-related disease, leading to a putative protective role of Roccaverano strain. Here we present evidence that goats experimentally infected with the avirulent genotype E SRLV-Roccaverano strain control the proviral load of a pathogenic challenge virus (CAEV-CO strain) more efficiently than naïve animals and appear to limit the spread of histological lesions to the contralateral joints

    Questo manuale è destinato agli studenti del corso di laurea magistrale in Medicina Veterinaria. A differenza dei testi classici non contiene immagini e bibliografia, ma include una serie di siti web di istituzioni/organizzazioni ufficiali nazionali ed internazionali, dove il lettore può trovare utili integrazioni e riferimenti. In questo modo si è cercato di stimolare un metodo di studio basato sulla ricerca attiva di informazioni aggiuntive ed approfondimenti, senza rinunciare a fornire agli studenti un testo guida per la preparazione dell'esame. La Sanità Pubblica Veterinaria (SPV) è per definizione materia molto vasta, ed in questo manuale ci siamo concentrati principalmente sugli argomenti trattati nei corsi tenuti presso le Università di Pisa e Torino. Alcuni temi presentano agganci e collegamenti con altre materie della formazione curriculare veterinaria, ma considerata la trasversalità della materia, sono stati inclusi ugualmente per fornire esempi concreti di attività svolte nell'ambito più ampio della SPV. Una certa attenzione è stata dedicata a diversi aspetti applicativi, innovativi o comunque non tradizionalmente affrontati nei corsi di studio, con l'intento che il testo possa risultare di qualche utilità anche all'aggiornamento post-laurea. Sulla base dei suggerimenti e dei commenti dei lettori il manuale potrà essere in futuro aggiornato ed arricchito con altri argomenti
