Photometric metallicity for 694233 Galactic giant stars from Gaia DR3 synthetic Stromgren photometry. Metallicity distribution functions of halo sub-structures
We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the
standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from
Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected
sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax
uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric
metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the
spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17,
focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The
metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display
a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2
<=[Fe/H]<= -0.4, while they show a systematic trend with [Fe/H] at higher
metallicity, beyond the applicability range of the relation. Those derived from
the Hilker et al. calibration display, in general, worse precision, and lower
accuracy in the metal-poor regime, but have a median accuracy < 0.05 dex for
[Fe/H]>= -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities
validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from
various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive
metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in
the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. The catalogue
including both sets of metallicities and the associated uncertainties is made
publicly available.Comment: Accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics. Latex. 20

Metal-poor stars with disc-like orbits. Traces of the Galactic Disc at very early epochs?
We use photometric metallicity estimates for about 700000 stars in the
surroundings of the Sun, with very accurate distances and 3-D motions measures
from Gaia DR3, to explore the properties of the metal-poor (-2.0<[Fe/H]<= -1.5;
MP) and very metal-poor ([Fe/H]<= -2.0; VMP) stars with disc kinematics in the
sample. We confirm the presence of a significant fraction of MP and VMP stars
with disc-like orbits and that prograde orbits are prevalent among them, with
prograde to retrograde ratio P/R ~3. We highlight for the first time a
statistically significant difference in the distribution of the Z-component of
the angular momentum (L_Z) and orbital eccentricity between prograde and
retrograde disc-like MP stars. The same kind of difference is found also in the
VMP subsample, albeit at a much lower level of statistical significance, likely
due to the small sample size. We show that prograde disc-like MP and VMP stars
display an additional component of the |L_Z| distribution with respect to their
retrograde counterpart. This component is at higher |L_Z| with respect to the
main peak of the distribution, possibly hinting at the presence of a pristine
prograde disc in the Milky Way. This hypothesis is supported by the results of
the analysis of a large sub-sample dominated by stars born in-situ. Also in
this case the prevalence of prograde stars is clearly detected at [Fe/H]<= -1.5
and their |L_Z| distribution is more skewed toward high |L_Z| values than their
retrograde counterpart. This suggests that the seed of what will eventually
evolve into the main disc components of the Milky Way may have been already in
place in the earliest phases of the Galaxy assembly.Comment: Accepted by A&A. Latex, 7 pages, 6 colour figure
Inclisiran in lipid management: A Literature overview and future perspectives
Primary and secondary prevention protocols aim at reducing the plasma levels of lipids - with particular reference to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) plasma concentrations – in order to improve the overall survival and reduce the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events. The use of statins has been widely considered as the first-line approach in lipids management as they can dramatically impact on the cardiovascular risk profile of individuals. The introduction of ezetimibe and proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors overcame the adverse effects of statins and ameliorate the achievement of the target lipids levels. Indeed, advances in therapies promote the use of specific molecules – i.e. short strands of RNA named small-interfering RNAs (siRNAs) – to suppress the transcription of genes related to lipids metabolism. Recently, the inclisiran has been developed: this is a siRNA able to block the mRNA of the PCSK9 gene. About 50% reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels have been observed in randomized controlled trials with inclisiran. The aim of this review was to summarize the literature regarding inclisiran and its possible role in the general management of patients with lipid disorders and/or in primary/secondary prevention protocols
Seedless hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods as a promising route for flexible tactile sensors
Hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods has been widely used for the development of tactile sensors, with the aid of ZnO seed layers, favoring the growth of dense and vertically aligned nanorods. However, seed layers represent an additional fabrication step in the sensor design. In this study, a seedless hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods was carried out on Au-coated Si and polyimide substrates. The effects of both the Au morphology and the growth temperature on the characteristics of the nanorods were investigated, finding that smaller Au grains produced tilted rods, while larger grains provided vertical rods. Highly dense and high-aspect-ratio nanorods with hexagonal prismatic shape were obtained at 75 °C and 85 °C, while pyramid-like rods were grown when the temperature was set to 95 °C. Finite-element simulations demonstrated that prismatic rods produce higher voltage responses than the pyramid-shaped ones. A tactile sensor, with an active area of 1 cm2, was fabricated on flexible polyimide substrate and embedding the nanorods forest in a polydimethylsiloxane matrix as a separation layer between the bottom and the top Au electrodes. The prototype showed clear responses upon applied loads of 2–4 N and vibrations over frequencies in the range of 20–800 Hz
Fiber bragg gratings for medical applications and future challenges: A review
In the last decades, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have become increasingly attractive to medical applications due to their unique properties such as small size, biocompatibility, immunity to electromagnetic interferences, high sensitivity and multiplexing capability. FBGs have been employed in the development of surgical tools, assistive devices, wearables, and biosensors, showing great potentialities for medical uses. This paper reviews the FBG-based measuring systems, their principle of work, and their applications in medicine and healthcare. Particular attention is given to sensing solutions for biomechanics, minimally invasive surgery, physiological monitoring, and medical biosensing. Strengths, weaknesses, open challenges, and future trends are also discussed to highlight how FBGs can meet the demands of next-generation medical devices and healthcare system
INTRAHEPATIC CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA DEVELOPMENT IN A PATIENT WITH A NOVEL BAP1 GERMLINE MUTATION AND LOW EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS
BRCA1 associated protein-1 (BAP1) germline mutations define a novel hereditary cancer syndrome, namely BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome (BAP1-TPDS), characterized by an increased susceptibility to develop different cancer types, including mesothelioma, uveal and cutaneous melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, and basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Currently, the role of BAP1 germline mutations in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) pathogenesis is less known. Here we report the first clinical case of a female patient who developed an iCCA when she was 47-years-old and was found to carry a novel germline mutation at a splicing site of exon 4 in BAP1 gene (NM_004656.4: c.255_255+6del). An accurate anamnesis revealed the absence of risk factors linked to iCCA development, except for a low occupational exposure to asbestos. In tumor tissue, BAP1 sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and immunoistochemistry showed the loss of heterozygosity and lack of nuclear expression, suggesting that BAP1 wild-type allele and functional protein were lost in cancer cells, in line with the classical two-hit model of tumor suppressor genes. Further studies are needed to confirm whether iCCA may be included into BAP1-TPDS cancer phenotypes and whether minimal asbestos exposure may facilitate the development of this malignancy in individuals carrying BAP1 germline mutations
The Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Philips Motiva Telehealth System
Objectives
The clinical effectiveness of Motiva Monitor platform was established in the previous study (TEN-HMS). Patients randomly assigned to receive Usual Care had higher one year mortality (45%) than patients assigned to receive Nurse Telephone Support (27%) or Home Telemonitoring (29%) (p=0.032). Our intention is to provide insights in the cost-effectiveness of Motiva telehealth system by modeling the intervention and running the analysis on top of the reported data.
Methods
Effectiveness was established by mining the EuroQol-5D from the original database, while the information on costs came from the literature and the manufacturer of the equipment. Direct healthcare costs considered ER visits, GP, Specialist, Hospitalist and Nurse time and resources utilization. The induced (indirect) costs were not considered in the analysis. The approximation of the cost of medical consumption came from the Netherlands only, although the original study was run in three European countries. We assumed the payer perspective for our analysis.
Results
The results clearly show, within the parameters of our model, the increased effectiveness of Home Telemonitoring and Nurse Telephone Support in comparison to the Usual Care. The deterministic results show ICERs of € 14.842 and € 12.547 per QALY (discounted at 1.5% a year) for HTM and NTS respectfully. Probabilistic results show that NTS was the most effective strategy in health systems that pay more than €12.500 per QALY. In the subgroup analysis HTM dominated both NTS and UC at the threshold of €16.500 in NYHA IV group of Chronic Heart Failure patients.
Conclusions
Home telemonitoring by Motiva Monitor system reduces mortality and lowers the in-hospital length of stay. On the quality of life dimensions, Home Telemonitoring was similarly effective as the Nurse Telephone Support, but with more costs. The cost-effectiveness analysis shows that both NTS and HTM dominate the Usual Care at WTP of €15.000
