Superconductivity in a Molecular Metal Cluster Compound
Compelling evidence for band-type conductivity and even bulk
superconductivity below K has been found in
Ga-NMR experiments in crystalline ordered, giant Ga
cluster-compounds. This material appears to represent the first realization of
a theoretical model proposed by Friedel in 1992 for superconductivity in
ordered arrays of weakly coupled, identical metal nanoparticles.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Giant isotope effect in the incoherent tunneling specific heat of the molecular nanomagnet Fe8
Time-dependent specific heat experiments on the molecular nanomagnet Fe8 and
the isotopic enriched analogue 57Fe8 are presented. The inclusion of the 57Fe
nuclear spins leads to a huge enhancement of the specific heat below 1 K,
ascribed to a strong increase in the spin-lattice relaxation rate Gamma arising
from incoherent, nuclear-spin-mediated magnetic quantum tunneling in the
ground-doublet. Since Gamma is found comparable to the expected tunneling rate,
the latter process has to be inelastic. A model for the coupling of the
tunneling levels to the lattice is presented. Under transverse field, a
crossover from nuclear-spin-mediated to phonon-induced tunneling is observed.Comment: Replaced with version accepted for publication in Physical Review

The culture of care within psychiatric services: tackling inequalities and improving clinical and organisational capabilities.
INTRODUCTION: Cultural Consultation is a clinical process that emerged from anthropological critiques of mental healthcare. It includes attention to therapeutic communication, research observations and research methods that capture cultural practices and narratives in mental healthcare. This essay describes the work of a Cultural Consultation Service (ToCCS) that improves service user outcomes by offering cultural consultation to mental health practitioners. The setting is a psychiatric service with complex and challenging work located in an ethnically diverse inner city urban area. Following a period of 18 months of cultural consultation, we gather the dominant narratives that emerged during our evaluation of our service. RESULTS: These narratives highlight how culture is conceptualized and acted upon in the day-to-day practices of individual health and social care professionals, specialist psychiatric teams and in care systems. The findings reveal common narratives and themes about culture, ethnicity, race and their perceived place and meaningfulness in clinical care. These narratives express underlying assumptions and covert rules for managing, and sometimes negating, dilemmas and difficulties when considering "culture" in the presentation and expression of mental distress. The narratives reveal an overall "culture of understanding cultural issues" and specific "cultures of care". These emerged as necessary foci of intervention to improve service user outcomes. CONCLUSION: Understanding the cultures of care showed that clinical and managerial over-structuring of care prioritises organisational proficiency, but it leads to inflexibility. Consequently, the care provided is less personalised and less accommodating of cultural issues, therefore, professionals are unable to see or consider cultural influences in recovery
Protective effect of a low single dose inhaled steroid against exercise induced bronchoconstriction
Objective Daily use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) reduces exercise induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in asthmatic children. A high single dose of ICS also provided acute protection against EIB. Objective of this study is to investigate whether a low single dose of ICS offers protection against EIB in asthmatic children. Methods 31 Mild asthmatic children not currently treated with inhaled corticosteroids, 5–16 years, with EIB (fall in FEV0.5/1 ≥ 13%) were included in a prospective intervention study. They performed two ECT's within 2 weeks. Four hours before the second test children inhaled 200 μg beclomethasone-dipropionate (BDP) with a breath-actuated inhaler (BAI). Results The median fall in FEV0.5/1 after 200 μg BDP was significantly reduced from 30.9% at baseline to 16.0% (P < 0.001). Twenty children (64.5%) showed a good response to 200 μg BDP (≥50% decrease in fall of FEV0.5/1), while 8 children showed a moderate response (25–50%), and three children showed no response at all (< 25%). Conclusion A low single dose ICS offers acute protection against EIB in the majority of asthmatic children not currently treated with inhaled corticosteroid
Magnetic properties of the spin-1 chain compound NiClCHCHCHNH
We report experimental results of the static magnetization, ESR and NMR
spectroscopic measurements of the Ni-hybrid compound
NiClCHCHCHNH. In this material NiCl octahedra are
structurally arranged in chains along the crystallographic -axis. According
to the static susceptibility and ESR data Ni spins are isotropic
and are coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM) along the chain with the exchange
constant K. These are important prerequisites for the realization of
the so-called Haldane spin-1 chain with the spin-singlet ground state and a
quantum spin gap. However, experimental results evidence AFM order at K presumably due to small interchain couplings. Interestingly,
frequency-, magnetic field-, and temperature-dependent ESR measurements, as
well as the NMR data, reveal signatures which could presumably indicate an
inhomogeneous ground state of co-existent mesoscopically spatially separated
AFM ordered and spin-singlet state regions similar to the situation observed
before in some spin-diluted Haldane magnets
The critical behaviour of the 2D Ising model in Transverse Field; a Density Matrix Renormalization calculation
We have adjusted the Density Matrix Renormalization method to handle two
dimensional systems of limited width. The key ingredient for this extension is
the incorporation of symmetries in the method. The advantage of our approach is
that we can force certain symmetry properties to the resulting ground state
wave function. Combining the results obtained for system sizes up-to and finite size scaling, we derive the phase transition point and the
critical exponent for the gap in the Ising model in a Transverse Field on a two

Pattern of recurrence in patients with a pathologically complete response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery for oesophageal cancer
BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery is a widely used treatment for locally advanced resectable oesophageal cancer, with 20-50 per cent of patients having a pathological complete response (pCR). Disease, however, still recurs in 20-30 per cent of these patients. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of recurrence in patients with a pCR after nCRT and surgery. METHODS: All patients with a pCR after nCRT and surgery included in the phase II and III CROSS (ChemoRadiotherapy for Oesophageal followed by Surgery Study) trials (April 2001 to December 2008) and after the CROSS trials (September 2009 to October 2017) were identified. The site of recurrence was compared with the applied radiation and surgical fields. Outcomes were median time to recurrence, and overall and progression-free survival. RESULTS: A total of 141 patients with a median follow-up of 100 (i.q.r. 64-134) months were included. Some 29 of 141 patients (20,6 per cent) developed recurrence. Of these, four had isolated locoregional recurrence, 15 had distant recurrence only, and ten had both locoregional and distant recurrence. Among the 14 patients with locoregional recurrences, five had recurrence within the radiation field, seven outside the radiation field, and two at the border. Median time to recurrence was 24 (10-62) months. The 5-year overall survival rate was 74 per cent and the recurrence-free survival rate was 70 per cent. CONCLUSION: Despite good overall survival, recurrence still occurred in 21 per cent of patients. Most recurrences were distant, outside the radiation and surgical fields
Phase Diagram of the Spin-Orbital model on the Square Lattice
We study the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model in both the weak and
strong limits of the quartic spin-orbital exchange interaction. This allows us
to study quantum phase transitions in the model and to approach from both sides
the most interesting intermediate-coupling regime and in particular the
SU(4)-symmetric point of the Hamiltonian. It was suggested earlier by Li et al
[Phys.Rev.Lett. vol. 81, 3527 (1999)] that at this point the ground state of
the system is a plaquette spin-orbital liquid. We argue that the state is more
complex. There is plaquette order, but it is anisotropic: bonds in one
direction are stronger than those in the perpendicular direction. This order is
somewhat similar to that found recently in the frustrated J_1-J_2 Heisenberg

Influence of Mg, Ag and Al substitutions on the magnetic excitations in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CuCrO2
Magnetic excitations in CuCrO, CuCrMgO,
CuAgCrO, and CuCrAlO have been
studied by powder inelastic neutron scattering to elucidate the element
substitution effects on the spin dynamics in the Heisenberg triangular-lattice
antiferromagnet CuCrO. The magnetic excitations in
CuCrMgO consist of a dispersive component and a flat
component. Though this feature is apparently similar to CuCrO, the energy
structure of the excitation spectrum shows some difference from that in
CuCrO. On the other hand, in CuAgCrO and
CuCrAlO the flat components are much reduced, the
low-energy parts of the excitation spectra become intense, and additional
low-energy diffusive spin fluctuations are induced. We argued the origins of
these changes in the magnetic excitations are ascribed to effects of the doped
holes or change of the dimensionality in the magnetic correlations.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Electronic density of states derived from thermodynamic critical field curves for underdoped La-Sr-Cu-O
Thermodynamic critical field curves have been measured for
over the full range of carrier concentrations
where superconductivity occurs in order to determine changes in the normal
state density of states with carrier concentration. There is a substantial
window in the plane where the measurements are possible because the
samples are both thermodynamically reversible and the temperature is low enough
that vortex fluctuations are not important. In this window, the data fit
Hao-Clem rather well, so this model is used to determine and
for each temperature and carrier concentration. Using N(0) and the ratio of the
energy gap to transition temperature, , as fitting
parameters, the curves give over the
whole range of . Values of N(0) remain rather constant in the optimum-doped
and overdoped regime, but drops quickly toward zero in the underdoped regime.
