Heat Capacity and Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Low-Dimensional Antiferromagnet YBaCuO
A study by specific heat of a polycrystalline sample of the low-dimensional
magnetic system YBaCuO is presented. Magnetic fields up to 14 T are
applied and permit to extract the (,) phase diagram. Below
T, the N\'eel temperature, associated with a
three-dimensional antiferromagnetic long-range ordering, is constant and equals
K. Above , increases linearly with and a
field-induced increase of the entropy at is related to the presence of an
isosbestic point at K, where all the specific heat curves cross.
A comparison is made between YBaCuO and the quasi-two-dimensional
magnetic systems BaNiVO, SrCuOCl, and
PrCuO, for which very similar phase diagrams have been reported. An
effective field-induced magnetic anisotropy is proposed to explain these phase
diagrams.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics: Structural Relaxation, Fictive temperature and Tool-Narayanaswamy phenomenology in Glasses
Starting from the second law of thermodynamics applied to an isolated system
consisting of the system surrounded by an extremely large medium, we formulate
a general non-equilibrium thermodynamic description of the system when it is
out of equilibrium. We then apply it to study the structural relaxation in
glasses and establish the phenomenology behind the concept of the fictive
temperature and of the empirical Tool-Narayanaswamy equation on firmer
theoretical foundation.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figur
Effect of Extending the Original Eligibility Criteria for the CROSS Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy on Toxicity and Survival in Esophageal Cancer
Patients with curable esophageal cancer (EC) who proceed beyond the original Chemoradiotherapy for Oesophageal Cancer Followed by Surgery Study (CROSS) eligibility criteria are also treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). This study assessed the effect that extending the CROSS eligibility criteria for nCRT has on treatment-related toxicity and overall survival (OS) in EC. The study enrolled 161 patients with locally advanced EC (T1N1-3/T2-4aN0-3/M0) treated with the CROSS schedule followed by esophagectomy. Group 1 consisted of 89 patients who met the CROSS criteria, and group 2 consisted of 72 patients who met the extended eligibility criteria, i.e. a tumor length greater than 8 cm (n = 24), more than 10% weight loss (n = 35), more than 2-4 cm extension in the stomach (n = 21), celiac lymph node metastasis (n = 13), and/or age over 75 years (n = 2). The study assessed the differences in nCRT-associated toxicity [National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) grade3] and 90-day postoperative mortality. Moreover, the prognostic value for OS was assessed with multivariate Cox regression analysis. No difference was found in nCRT-associated toxicity (P = 0.117), postoperative complications (P = 0.783), and 90-day mortality (P = 0.492). The OS differed significantly (P = 0.004), with a median of 37.3 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 10.4-64.2 months] for group 1 and 17.2 months (95% CI 13.8-20.7 months) for group 2. Pathologic N stage (P = 0.023), pathologic T stage (P = 0.043), and group 2 (P = 0.008) were independent prognostic factors for OS. Extension of the CROSS study eligibility criteria for nCRT did not affect nCRT-associated toxicity, postoperative complications, and postoperative mortality, but was prognostic for OS
Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation
The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot
dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter
paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario
before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the
plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps
turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries
causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex
lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the
latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of
earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and
white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature
fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
Non-equilibrium work relations
This is a brief review of recently derived relations describing the behaviour
of systems far from equilibrium. They include the Fluctuation Theorem,
Jarzynski's and Crooks' equalities, and an extended form of the Second
Principle for general steady states. They are very general and their proofs
are, in most cases, disconcertingly simple.Comment: Brief Summer School Lecture Note
Radon transform and pattern functions in quantum tomography
The two-dimensional Radon transform of the Wigner quasiprobability is
introduced in canonical form and the functions playing a role in its inversion
are discussed. The transformation properties of this Radon transform with
respect to displacement and squeezing of states are studied and it is shown
that the last is equivalent to a symplectic transformation of the variables of
the Radon transform with the contragredient matrix to the transformation of the
variables in the Wigner quasiprobability. The reconstruction of the density
operator from the Radon transform and the direct reconstruction of its
Fock-state matrix elements and of its normally ordered moments are discussed.
It is found that for finite-order moments the integration over the angle can be
reduced to a finite sum over a discrete set of angles. The reconstruction of
the Fock-state matrix elements from the normally ordered moments leads to a new
representation of the pattern functions by convergent series over even or odd
Hermite polynomials which is appropriate for practical calculations. The
structure of the pattern functions as first derivatives of the products of
normalizable and nonnormalizable eigenfunctions to the number operator is
considered from the point of view of this new representation.Comment: To appear on Journal of Modern Optics.Submitted t
Thermodynamic Field Theory with the Iso-Entropic Formalism
A new formulation of the thermodynamic field theory (TFT) is presented. In
this new version, one of the basic restriction in the old theory, namely a
closed-form solution for the thermodynamic field strength, has been removed. In
addition, the general covariance principle is replaced by Prigogine's
thermodynamic covariance principle (TCP). The introduction of TCP required the
application of an appropriate mathematical formalism, which has been referred
to as the iso-entropic formalism. The validity of the Glansdorff-Prigogine
Universal Criterion of Evolution, via geometrical arguments, is proven. A new
set of thermodynamic field equations, able to determine the nonlinear
corrections to the linear ("Onsager") transport coefficients, is also derived.
The geometry of the thermodynamic space is non-Riemannian tending to be
Riemannian for hight values of the entropy production. In this limit, we obtain
again the same thermodynamic field equations found by the old theory.
Applications of the theory, such as transport in magnetically confined plasmas,
materials submitted to temperature and electric potential gradients or to
unimolecular triangular chemical reactions can be found at references cited
herein.Comment: 35 page
