    Nanoparticles modified screen printed electrode for electrochemical determination of COD

    The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a parameter widely used to determine organic pollutants in water and is defined as the number of oxygen equivalents necessary to oxidize the organic compounds. The standard method for COD measurement (the dichromate titration) suffers from several inherent drawbacks such as the long time of the process and the consumption of toxic chemicals. Hence, interest is growing towards those methods employing electrochemical oxidation of organic compounds, as they allow to dispense with toxic reagents and above all to perform a continuous determination. In this work a new electrochemical method for COD measurement has been developed based on direct oxidation of organic molecules on suitably modified electrodic surfaces. In particular, we have developed various sensors based on modified working electrode surfaces obtained by electrodepositing copper and/or nickel oxide nanoparticles onto several commercial screen printed electrodes. Glucose was used as the standard compound for COD measurements: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O The metallic nanoparticles catalyze the oxidation of the glucose, as well as of different organic pollutants, and make the detection possible at relatively low potential, also in presence of chloride as interferent. The analytical parameters were optimized and the results obtained highlight how the electrodeposition of different metallic nanoparticles onto several screen printed electrode surfaces can influence the selectivity and sensitivity towards the COD detection in real matrices, via electrochemical method. The results were compared with those obtained by the standard method and showed a good agreement. These findings provide an interesting strategy to obtain a simple, cheap, portable and eventually continuous sensor for COD measurement

    Work Extraction and Energy Storage in the Dicke Model

    We study work extraction from the Dicke model achieved using simple unitary cyclic transformations keeping into account both a non optimal unitary protocol, and the energetic cost of creating the initial state. By analyzing the role of entanglement, we find that highly entangled states can be inefficient for energy storage when considering the energetic cost of creating the state. Such surprising result holds notwithstanding the fact that the criticality of the model at hand can sensibly improve the extraction of work. While showing the advantages of using a many-body system for work extraction, our results demonstrate that entanglement is not necessarily advantageous for energy storage purposes, when non optimal processes are considered. Our work shows the importance of better understanding the complex interconnections between non-equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum systems and correlations among their subparts.Comment: 5 pages + supplementary informatio

    Abnormal hippocampal melatoninergic system: a potential link between absence epilepsy and depression-like behavior in WAG/Rij rats?

    Absence epilepsy and depression are comorbid disorders, but the molecular link between the two disorders is unknown. Here, we examined the role of the melatoninergic system in the pathophysiology of spike and wave discharges (SWDs) and depression-like behaviour in the Wistar Albino Glaxo from Rijswijk (WAG/Rij) rat model of absence epilepsy. In WAG/Rij rats, SWD incidence was higher during the dark period of the light-dark cycle, in agreement with previous findings. However, neither pinealectomy nor melatonin administration had any effect on SWD incidence, suggesting that the melatoninergic system was not involved in the pathophysiology of absence-like seizures. Endogenous melatonin levels were lower in the hippocampus of WAG/Rij rats as compared to non-epileptic control rats, and this was associated with higher levels of melatonin receptors in the hippocampus, but not in the thalamus. In line with the reduced melatonin levels, cell density was lower in the hippocampus ofWAG/Rij rats and was further reduced by pinealectomy. As expected, WAG/Rij rats showed an increased depression-like behaviour in the sucrose preference and forced swim tests, as compared to non-epileptic controls. Pinealectomy abolished the difference between the two strains of rats by enhancing depression-like behaviour in non-epileptic controls. Melatonin replacement displayed a significant antidepressant-like effect in bothWAG/Rij and control rats. These findings suggest that a defect of hippocampal melatoninergic system may be one of the mechanisms underlying the depression-like phenotype inWAG/Rij rats and that activation of melatonin receptors might represent a valuable strategy in the treatment of depression associated with absence epilepsy

    Stretched exponential relaxation in a diffusive lattice model

    We studied the single dimer dynamics in a lattice diffusive model as a function of particle density in the high densification regime. The mean square displacement is found to be subdiffusive both in one and two dimensions. The spatial dependence of the self part of the van Hove correlation function displays as function of rr a single peak and signals a dramatic slow down of the system for high density. The self intermediate scattering function is fitted to the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts law. The exponent β\beta extracted from the fits is density independent while the relaxation time τ\tau follows a scaling law with an exponent 2.5.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys.     Vibrational assisted conduction in a molecular wire

    We present a detailed study of the conduction properties of a molecular wire where hopping processes between electronic sites are coupled to a vibrational mode of the molecule. The latter is sandwiched between two electronic leads at finite temperatures. We show that the electro-mechanical coupling can lead to a strong enhancement of the lead-to-lead conduction. Moreover, under suitable driving of the molecular vibrational mode, the device can act as a transistor passing sharply from enhanced conduction to short-circuit configuration.Comment: 10 pages with appendix and 5 figure

    The BeppoSAX view of the hot cluster Abell 2319

    We present results from a BeppoSAX observation of the rich cluster Abell 2319. The broad band spectrum (2-50 keV) of the cluster can be adequately represented by an optically thin thermal emission model with a temperature of 9.6+/-0.3 keV and a metal abundance of 0.25+/-0.03 in solar units, and with no evidence of a hard X-ray excess in the PDS spectrum. From the upper limit to the hard tail component we derive a lower limit of ~0.04 \muG for the volume-averaged intracluster magnetic field. By performing spatially resolved spectroscopy in the medium energy band (2-10 keV), we find that the projected radial temperature and metal abundance profiles are constant out to a radius of 16 arcmin (1.4 Mpc). A reduction of the temperature of 1/3, when going from the cluster core out to 16 arcmin, can be excluded in the present data at the 99% confidence level. From the analysis of the temperature and abundance maps we find evidence of a temperature enhancement and of an abundance decrement in a region localized 6 arcmin--8 arcmin NE of the core, where a merger event may be taking place. Finally, the temperature map indicates that the subcluster located NW of the main cluster may be somewhat cooler than the rest of the cluster.Comment: To appear in ApJ-Letter
