    Speed limits for quantum gates in multi-qubit systems

    We use analytical and numerical calculations to obtain speed limits for various unitary quantum operations in multiqubit systems under typical experimental conditions. The operations that we consider include single-, two-, and three-qubit gates, as well as quantum-state transfer in a chain of qubits. We find in particular that simple methods for implementing two-qubit gates generally provide the fastest possible implementations of these gates. We also find that the three-qubit Toffoli gate time varies greatly depending on the type of interactions and the system's geometry, taking only slightly longer than a two-qubit controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for a triangle geometry.     Dispersal of larval and juvenile seabream: Implications for Mediterranean marine protected areas

    In the marine context, information about dispersal is essential for the design of networks of marine protected areas (MPAs). Generally, most of the dispersal of demersal fishes is thought to be driven by the transport of eggs and larvae in currents, with the potential contribution of dispersal in later life stages relatively minimal.Using otolith chemistry analyses, we estimate dispersal patterns across a spatial scale of approximately 180. km at both propagule (i.e. eggs and larvae) and juvenile (i.e. between settlement and recruitment) stages of a Mediterranean coastal fishery species, the two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris. We detected three major natal sources of propagules replenishing local populations in the entire study area, suggesting that propagule dispersal distance extends to at least 90. km. For the juvenile stage, we detected dispersal of up to 165. km. Our work highlights the surprising and significant role of dispersal during the juvenile life stages as an important mechanism connecting populations. Such new insights are crucial for creating effective management strategies (e.g. MPAs and MPA networks) and to gain support from policymakers and stakeholders, highlighting that MPA benefits can extend well beyond MPA borders, and not only via dispersal of eggs and larvae, but also through movement by juveniles

    It is shown that the mean monthly sea level of a non-permanent station can be referred to the long-term sea level of a permanent one when tidal stations are influenced by similar meteorological and oceanographical effects. Practical methods are derived : one is based on the direct transference and the other based on the ratio of the variances of the daily mean sea level. Applications of the methods are made for the ports of Cananeia, Ubatuba, Santos and Ilha Grande on the southern coast of Brazil

    Organic Molecules in the Galactic Center. Hot Core Chemistry without Hot Cores

    We study the origin of large abundances of complex organic molecules in the Galactic center (GC). We carried out a systematic study of the complex organic molecules CH3OH, C2H5OH, (CH3)2O, HCOOCH3, HCOOH, CH3COOH, H2CO, and CS toward 40 GC molecular clouds. Using the LTE approximation, we derived the physical properties of GC molecular clouds and the abundances of the complex molecules.The CH3OH abundance between clouds varies by nearly two orders of magnitude from 2.4x10^{-8} to 1.1x10^{-6}. The abundance of the other complex organic molecules relative to that of CH3OH is basically independent of the CH3OH abundance, with variations of only a factor 4-8. The abundances of complex organic molecules in the GC are compared with those measured in hot cores and hot corinos, in which these complex molecules are also abundant. We find that both the abundance and the abundance ratios of the complex molecules relative to CH3OH in hot cores are similar to those found in the GC clouds. However, hot corinos show different abundance ratios than observed in hot cores and in GC clouds. The rather constant abundance of all the complex molecules relative to CH3OH suggests that all complex molecules are ejected from grain mantles by shocks. Frequent (similar 10^{5}years) shocks with velocities >6km/s are required to explain the high abundances in gas phase of complex organic molecules in the GC molecular clouds. The rather uniform abundance ratios in the GC clouds and in Galactic hot cores indicate a similar average composition of grain mantles in both kinds of regions.     Selective darkening of degenerate transitions for implementing quantum controlled-NOT gates

    We present a theoretical analysis of the selective darkening method for implementing quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates. This method, which we recently proposed and demonstrated, consists of driving two transversely-coupled quantum bits (qubits) with a driving field that is resonant with one of the two qubits. For specific relative amplitudes and phases of the driving field felt by the two qubits, one of the two transitions in the degenerate pair is darkened, or in other words, becomes forbidden by effective selection rules. At these driving conditions, the evolution of the two-qubit state realizes a CNOT gate. The gate speed is found to be limited only by the coupling energy J, which is the fundamental speed limit for any entangling gate. Numerical simulations show that at gate speeds corresponding to 0.48J and 0.07J, the gate fidelity is 99% and 99.99%, respectively, and increases further for lower gate speeds. In addition, the effect of higher-lying energy levels and weak anharmonicity is studied, as well as the scalability of the method to systems of multiple qubits. We conclude that in all these respects this method is competitive with existing schemes for creating entanglement, with the added advantages of being applicable for qubits operating at fixed frequencies (either by design or for exploitation of coherence sweet-spots) and having the simplicity of microwave-only operation.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

    Numerical investigations about the sound transmission loss of a fuselage panel section with embedded periodic foams

    The scope of this paper is to investigate the sound transmission loss of a typical fuselage panel section, as well as to propose solutions based on the inclusion of a periodic pattern inside its foam core, which aim at passively improving the acoustic performance in a mid-high range of frequencies. In detail, a new fuselage panel configuration is numerically studied, starting from the state of the art regarding the acoustic packages based on porous meta-materials. The main novelties of the present work are represented by the application of a meta-core solution inside an acoustic package of aeronautical interest, as well as a systematic investigation of the effects deriving from its geometrical parameters. In order to reach this goal, a numerical model of a fuselage panel section is studied, and the effect of several periodic patterns are simulated; more specifically, twelve configurations are taken into account, each with different radius of the inclusions and number of unit cells along the thickness. For each of these layouts, the mass increase of the so-called meta-core, compared to that of its classical homogeneous counterpart, is estimated, together with the associated mid-band frequency and amplitude of the sound transmission loss peak, which is caused by the additional acoustic modes excited by the periodic nature of the meta-core itself. Results are presented in terms of tables and graphs, which may constitute a good basis in order to perform preliminary design considerations that could be interesting for further generalizations
