    Distributed leadership: A model for student leadership engagement

    Developing student leadership has never been more demanded of higher education institutions than within a 21st century VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world. Globally, there is an increasing preference for organisations to become more devolved and operate more collaboratively (Hayward 2015). Rapid socio-economic changes and enhanced access to higher education, have seen 21st century institutions around the world facing major challenges to their governance systems, curriculum, external relations, research and financing (Jones and Harvey 2017; Black 2015; Jones 2014; Shin and Harman 2009). South African higher education institutions have not escaped these global challenges but the issues have been further exacerbated by the legacy of apartheid and demands for political redress, transformation and equal access (Habib 2016; South African Civil Society Information Services 2013). Such issues are unique to the South African higher education landscape and are demonstrated in the frustrations of the country’s youth, which are regularly being played out on our streets and university campuses.     Cities across the world have shifted their focus to urban development and place marketing strategies. These concepts are increasingly becoming important since the competition between cities have intensified globally in order to obtain investments, attract tourists, provide better living space, and to improve community businesses and overall economies of the city. Johannesburg has made use of various labels to provide a unique and attractive destination brand. The city has undergone significant changes in order to improve and reposition its image. In particular, there has been a focus on the redevelopment and brand image repositioning of the Inner City of Johannesburg. Redevelopment strategies have been outlined and implemented in order to improve the areas within the Inner City of Johannesburg. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the current attitudes and perceptions of the public towards the Inner City of Johannesburg. A quantitative approach was used. A convenience sample consisting of 343 individuals within the Inner City of Johannesburg completed the distributed survey instrument. The data analysis consists of multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that Government services and social bonding are the key factors the public value when they visit the inner city.KIM201

    Electrically driven convection in a thin annular film undergoing circular Couette flow

    We investigate the linear stability of a thin, suspended, annular film of conducting fluid with a voltage difference applied between its inner and outer edges. For a sufficiently large voltage, such a film is unstable to radially-driven electroconvection due to charges which develop on its free surfaces. The film can also be subjected to a Couette shear by rotating its inner edge. This combination is experimentally realized using films of smectic A liquid crystals. In the absence of shear, the convective flow consists of a stationary, azimuthally one-dimensional pattern of symmetric, counter-rotating vortex pairs. When Couette flow is applied, an azimuthally traveling pattern results. When viewed in a co-rotating frame, the traveling pattern consists of pairs of asymmetric vortices. We calculate the neutral stability boundary for arbitrary radius ratio α\alpha and Reynolds number Re{{\cal R} e} of the shear flow, and obtain the critical control parameter Rc(α,Re){\cal R}_c (\alpha, {{\cal R} e}) and the critical azimuthal mode number mc(α,Re){m_c (\alpha, {{\cal R} e})}. The Couette flow suppresses the onset of electroconvection, so that Rc(α,Re)>Rc(α,0){\cal R}_c (\alpha, {{\cal R} e}) > {\cal R}_c (\alpha,0). The calculated suppression is compared with experiments performed at α=0.56\alpha = 0.56 and 0Re0.220 \leq {{\cal R} e} \leq 0.22 .Comment: 17 pages, 2 column with 9 included eps figures.     The impact of Vogue germany’s fashion images on female reader’s well-being

    This internship report will discuss my experience as a trainee in the magazine Vogue Germany in Paris between September 2020 and May 2021. As an operational assistant in the fashion department, I was directly involved with the production of Vogue Germany’s fashion images, mostly picturing women. During the preparation for the shoots, the contact with multiple experts in the fashion industry made me aware of and impressed by the impact fashion paper magazines have on the configuration of women’s identity, and consequently, on their well-being. In this report I seek to understand how the processes underlying the production of fashion images representing women have psychological and behavioral implications for female readers. Drawing on neurological and sociological principles, I focus particularly on how images can reinforce society’s preconceived representations of and prejudices against women. Neurological principles have demonstrated the potential impact of images on well-being. Thus, through a selection of case studies found in the issues of Vogue Germany published during periods of confinement due to Covid-19, I examine how and to what extent the representation of women in the production of fashion images can lead to psychological changes in female readers, thereby impacting their well-being. To understand how women would like to be represented in fashion photography, I adopted the use of qualitative research through focus group interviews. Neuropsychological principles of mental imagery informed the causal link between the representation of women in fashion magazines and their impact on women’s identity.O presente relatório de estágio visa discutir a minha experiência como estagiária na revista Vogue Germany em Paris, de setembro de 2020 a maio de 2021. Como assistente operacional no departamento de moda, estive diretamente envolvida com a produção das fotografias de moda da Vogue Germany, a maioria das quais representando mulheres. Na preparação das sessões fotográficas, o contacto com vários especialistas da indústria da moda tornou-me consciente do impacto que as revistas de moda em suporte de papel tem na configuração da identidade das mulheres, e, consequentemente, no seu bem-estar. Neste relatório, procuro compreender como os processos subjacentes à produção de imagens de moda que representam mulheres têm implicações de ordem psicológica e comportamental para as leitoras. Lançando mão de princípios neurológicos e sociológicos, examino como as imagens podem reforçar representações sociais pré-concebidas e preconceitos vários contra as mulheres. Os princípios neurológicos têm demonstrado o potencial impacto das imagens sobre o bem-estar. Assim sendo, através de uma seleção de estudos de casos retirados dos números da Vogue Germany, que foram publicados no decorrer dos períodos de confinamento devido a Covid-19, reflito sobre como e em que medida a representação das mulheres na produção de imagens de moda pode levar a alterações psicológicas nas leitoras, com implicações no seu bem-estar. Para compreender como as mulheres gostariam de ser representadas nas fotografias de moda, utilizei como instrumento metodológico a investigação qualitativa através de entrevistas em focus groups.     Combustion synthesis of cadmium sulphide nanomaterials for efficient visible light driven hydrogen production from water

    Anion-doped cadmium sulphide nanomaterials have been synthesized by using combustion method at normal atmospheric conditions. Oxidant/fuel ratios have been optimized in order to obtain CdS with best characteristics. Formation of CdS and size of crystallite were identified by X-ray diffraction and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of C and N in the CdS matrix. The observed enhanced photocatalytic activity of the CdS nanomaterials for the hydrogen production from water (2120 μmol/h) can be attributed to high crystallinity, low band gap and less exciton recombination due to the C and N doping

    Examiner performance with visual, probing and FOTI caries diagnosis in the primary dentition

    PKTo compare clinical reproducibility of dental caries diagnosis in the primary dentition under field conditions, a convenience sample of 5-year-old children in a nursery school in Germiston, was examined for dental caries by four dentists using visual (mirror), visual plus tactile (mirror plus probe) and fibre-optic transillumination (FOTI) methods. Seventeen children were examined on day one and 11 re-examined on day two. Inter-examiner agreement was high, above 90%. Visual examination on its own is comparable with the traditional visual plus tactile method and to FOTI under field conditions. New caries data collected by visual diagnosis alone may, reasonably, be compared with historical data diagnosed with visual + tactile examination

    Bifurcations in annular electroconvection with an imposed shear

    We report an experimental study of the primary bifurcation in electrically-driven convection in a freely suspended film. A weakly conducting, submicron thick smectic liquid crystal film was supported by concentric circular electrodes. It electroconvected when a sufficiently large voltage VV was applied between its inner and outer edges. The film could sustain rapid flows and yet remain strictly two-dimensional. By rotation of the inner electrode, a circular Couette shear could be independently imposed. The control parameters were a dimensionless number R{\cal R}, analogous to the Rayleigh number, which is V2\propto V^2 and the Reynolds number Re{\cal R}e of the azimuthal shear flow. The geometrical and material properties of the film were characterized by the radius ratio α\alpha, and a Prandtl-like number P{\cal P}. Using measurements of current-voltage characteristics of a large number of films, we examined the onset of electroconvection over a broad range of α\alpha, P{\cal P} and Re{\cal R}e. We compared this data quantitatively to the results of linear stability theory. This could be done with essentially no adjustable parameters. The current-voltage data above onset were then used to infer the amplitude of electroconvection in the weakly nonlinear regime by fitting them to a steady-state amplitude equation of the Landau form. We show how the primary bifurcation can be tuned between supercritical and subcritical by changing α\alpha and Re{\cal R}e.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. E.
