HI Absorption Toward HII Regions at Small Galactic Longitudes
We make a comprehensive study of HI absorption toward HII regions located
within Galactic longitudes less than 10 degrees. Structures in the extreme
inner Galaxy are traced using the longitude-velocity space distribution of this
absorption. We find significant HI absorption associated with the Near and Far
3kpc Arms, the Connecting Arm, Banias Clump 1 and the H I Tilted Disk. We also
constrain the line of sight distances to HII regions, by using HI absorption
spectra together with the HII region velocities measured by radio recombination
lines.Comment: Complete figure set available in online version of journal. Accepted

An absolute quantum energy inequality for the Dirac field in curved spacetime
Quantum Weak Energy Inequalities (QWEIs) are results which limit the extent
to which the smeared renormalised energy density of a quantum field can be
negative. On globally hyperbolic spacetimes the massive quantum Dirac field is
known to obey a QWEI in terms of a reference state chosen arbitrarily from the
class of Hadamard states; however, there exist spacetimes of interest on which
state-dependent bounds cannot be evaluated. In this paper we prove the first
QWEI for the massive quantum Dirac field on four dimensional globally
hyperbolic spacetime in which the bound depends only on the local geometry;
such a QWEI is known as an absolute QWEI
Entanglement and the Power of One Qubit
The "Power of One Qubit" refers to a computational model that has access to
only one pure bit of quantum information, along with n qubits in the totally
mixed state. This model, though not as powerful as a pure-state quantum
computer, is capable of performing some computational tasks exponentially
faster than any known classical algorithm. One such task is to estimate with
fixed accuracy the normalized trace of a unitary operator that can be
implemented efficiently in a quantum circuit. We show that circuits of this
type generally lead to entangled states, and we investigate the amount of
entanglement possible in such circuits, as measured by the multiplicative
negativity. We show that the multiplicative negativity is bounded by a
constant, independent of n, for all bipartite divisions of the n+1 qubits, and
so becomes, when n is large, a vanishingly small fraction of the maximum
possible multiplicative negativity for roughly equal divisions. This suggests
that the global nature of entanglement is a more important resource for quantum
computation than the magnitude of the entanglement.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Construction of the Soudan 2 detector
Progress in the construction of the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector which is being built at the Soudan iron mine in Minnesota is discussed. The expected event rate and characteristics of low energy neutrino events, muon events, multiple muon events, and other cosmic ray phenomena are discussed
