A modular methodology for converting large, complex books into usable, accessible and standards-compliant ebooks
This report describes the methodology used for ebook creation for the Glasgow Digital Library (GDL), and provides detailed instructions on how the same methodology could be used elsewhere. The document includes a description and explanation of the processes for ebook creation followed by a tutorial
Mode-Coupling Theory of Colloids with Short-range Attractions
Within the framework of the mode-coupling theory of super-cooled liquids, we
investigate new phenomena in colloidal systems on approach to their glass
transitions. When the inter-particle potential contains an attractive part,
besides the usual repulsive hard core, two intersecting liquid-glass transition
lines appear, one of which extends to low densities, while the other one, at
high densities, shows a re-entrant behaviour. In the glassy region a new type
of transition appears between two different types of glasses. The complex
phenomenology can be described in terms of higher order glass transition
singularities. The various glass phases are characterised by means of their
viscoelastic properties. The glass driven by attractions has been associated to
particle gels, and the other glass is the well known repulsive colloidal glass.
These correspondences, in associations with the new predictions of glassy
behaviour mean that such phenomena may be expected in colloidal systems with,
for example, strong depletion or other short-ranged attractive potentials.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

'Satan's bludy clawses':How religious persecution, exile and radicalization moulded British Protestant identities
This paper explores the social effects of pornography as they are portrayed in the tv series Damages. The key words that are analyzed â pleasure, guilt, screen, society, habit, masturbation â create an indirect but strong relationship between the lonely practice and the everyday forms of life. This conceptual constellation â that arises from the interpretation of the first season of the series, âThe Frobisher caseâ â composes an organic pattern and provide a problematic image of the pornographic matter.
The early career op Christopher Goodman and his place in the development of English protestant thought
The career and thought of Christopher Goodman provides the backbone of this thesis. They are used to demonstrate the interaction between men and ideas in England during the middle years of the sixteenth century and so give a clearer picture of the development of English protestant thought. The study has set out to discover three things about Goodman and his book 'How Superior Powers Oght to be Obeyd(^1). The first is to explain his intention in writing the book; the second to describe its content] and the third to understand its impact in 1558.As a study of Goodman's book cannot be divorced from the study of its author, the biographical details of Goodman's life to I558 are investigated. They help to give the fullest possible picture of his intentions in writing the book. Detailed consideration Is given to his experiences in Edwardian Oxford at Brasenose College and Christ church and to his exile in Germany and Switzerland during the reign of Mary. To give an accurate description of the content and impact of Goodman's book it is necessary to establish its ideological context. This involves documenting the personnel, activities and ideas of the Christ Church Circle and of the Marian exiles, particularly those who comprised the English exile community in Geneva. Only if such a picture is pieced together is it possible to distinguish between the unusual and the commonplace in Goodman's thinking, and appreciate the revolutionary nature of his concept of a covenanted society, the people of God
Kinetics of the reduction of metalloproteins by chromous ion
The reduction of Cu(330) in Rhus vernicifera laccase by chromous ion is 30% faster than reduction of Cu(614) at room temperature [pH 4.8, ” = 0.1 (NaCl)], and two parallel first-order paths, attributed to heterogeneity of the protein, are observed at both wavelengths. The reactions of stellacyanin, spinach and French-bean plastocyanins, and cytochrome c with chromous ion under similar conditions are faster than that with laccase by factors of 102 to 104, and are first order in protein concentration. Comparison of rates and activation parameters for the reduction of "blue" copper in laccase, stellacyanin, and the two plastocyanins indicates that reduction of the Cu(614) site in laccase may occur by intramolecular electron transfer from one of the Cu(330) sites. Our value of ÎH (17.4 kcal/mol) for the chromous ion reduction of cytochrome c is consistent with a mechanism in which major conformational changes in the protein must accompany electron transfer
Enhancement and evaluation of Skylab photography for potential land use inventories, part 1
The author has identified the following significant results. Three sites were evaluated for land use inventory: Finger Lakes - Tompkins County, Lower Hudson Valley - Newburgh, and Suffolk County - Long Island. Special photo enhancement processes were developed to standardize the density range and contrast among S190A negatives. Enhanced black and white enlargements were converted to color by contact printing onto diazo film. A color prediction model related the density values on each spectral band for each category of land use to the spectral properties of the various diazo dyes. The S190A multispectral system proved to be almost as effective as the S190B high resolution camera for inventorying land use. Aggregate error for Level 1 averaged about 12% while Level 2 aggregate error averaged about 25%. The S190A system proved to be much superior to LANDSAT in inventorying land use, primarily because of increased resolution
Health and education provider collaboration to deliver adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Sri Lanka
The complex nature of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) determinants demands a multidisciplinary and intersectoral approach. Collaborative approaches are central to the delivery of quality health care and services but the focus is often health sector specific. Few research studies have explored the views and experiences of health workers and teachers and examined how ASRH services and information are provided by professionals across the education and health sector. Sri Lanka has made considerable progress towards addressing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), however, there are still gaps reflected in adolescent health, social indicators, and the delivery of services. Enhancing the collective efforts of teachers and health professionals may help to improve the quality and use of services and ASRH knowledge. This study aimed to identify the experiences, needs, knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary healthcare and education professionals and the strategies that best support them to deliver sexual and reproductive health information, education, counseling and clinical services to Sri Lankan adolescents. Qualitative and survey data were gathered from 65 nurses, midwives, public health inspectors, medical officers, teachers, counselors and principals in the district of Kalutara. Knowledge, attitudes and service gaps were identified in relation to contraception and policy guiding practice. Participants highlighted concerns with confidence, roles and training that were said to affect student access to appropriate health services. ASRH Collaborative practices were noted across the sectors and strategies suggested for improvement. Findings suggest that inter-professional educa-tion and training may provide opportunities to enhance collaboration supported and guided by appropriate policy, supervision and job descriptions (i.e. roles and responsibilities)
