    Vector form factor in K_l3 semileptonic decay with two flavors of dynamical domain-wall quarks

    We calculate the vector form factor in K \to \pi l \nu semileptonic decays at zero momentum transfer f_+(0) from numerical simulations of two-flavor QCD on the lattice. Our simulations are carried out on 16^3 \times 32 at a lattice spacing of a \simeq 0.12 fm using a combination of the DBW2 gauge and the domain-wall quark actions, which possesses excellent chiral symmetry even at finite lattice spacings. The size of fifth dimension is set to L_s=12, which leads to a residual quark mass of a few MeV. Through a set of double ratios of correlation functions, the form factor calculated on the lattice is accurately interpolated to zero momentum transfer, and then is extrapolated to the physical quark mass. We obtain f_+(0)=0.968(9)(6), where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error due to the chiral extrapolation. Previous estimates based on a phenomenological model and chiral perturbation theory are consistent with our result. Combining with an average of the decay rate from recent experiments, our estimate of f_+(0) leads to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |V_{us}|=0.2245(27), which is consistent with CKM unitarity. These estimates of f_+(0) and |V_{us}| are subject to systematic uncertainties due to the finite lattice spacing and quenching of strange quarks, though nice consistency in f_+(0) with previous lattice calculations suggests that these errors are not large.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables, RevTeX4; v3: one table added, results and conclusions unchanged, final version to appear in Phys.Rev.

    Exact relaxation in a class of non-equilibrium quantum lattice systems

    A reasonable physical intuition in the study of interacting quantum systems says that, independent of the initial state, the system will tend to equilibrate. In this work we study a setting where relaxation to a steady state is exact, namely for the Bose-Hubbard model where the system is quenched from a Mott quantum phase to the strong superfluid regime. We find that the evolving state locally relaxes to a steady state with maximum entropy constrained by second moments, maximizing the entanglement, to a state which is different from the thermal state of the new Hamiltonian. Remarkably, in the infinite system limit this relaxation is true for all large times, and no time average is necessary. For large but finite system size we give a time interval for which the system locally "looks relaxed" up to a prescribed error. Our argument includes a central limit theorem for harmonic systems and exploits the finite speed of sound. Additionally, we show that for all periodic initial configurations, reminiscent of charge density waves, the system relaxes locally.     We present a complete catalog of H I emission and absorption spectrum pairs, toward H II regions, detectable within the boundaries of the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS I), a total of 252 regions. The catalog is presented in graphical, numerical and summary formats.     One-loop Corrections to the S Parameter in the Four-site Model

    We compute the leading chiral-logarithmic corrections to the S parameter in the four-site Higgsless model. In addition to the usual electroweak gauge bosons of the Standard Model, this model contains two sets of heavy charged and neutral gauge bosons. In the continuum limit, the latter gauge bosons can be identified with the first excited Kaluza-Klein states of the W^\pm and Z bosons of a warped extra-dimensional model with an SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X bulk gauge symmetry. We consider delocalized fermions and show that the delocalization parameter must be considerably tuned from its tree-level ideal value in order to reconcile experimental constraints with the one-loop results. Hence, the delocalization of fermions does not solve the problem of large contributions to the S parameter in this class of theories and significant contributions to S can potentially occur at one-loop.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure

    SUSY QCD Corrections to Higgs-b Production : Is the \Delta_b Approximation Accurate?

    The associated production of a Higgs boson with a b quark is a discovery channel for the lightest MSSM neutral Higgs boson. We consider the SUSY QCD contributions from squarks and gluinos and discuss the decoupling properties of these effects. A detailed comparison of our exact order(alpha_s) results with those of a widely used effective Lagrangian approach, the \Delta_b approximation, is presented. The \Delta_b approximation is shown to accurately reproduce the exact one-loop SQCD result to within a few percent over a wide range of parameter space.Comment: figures added, version to be published in Phys Rev

    The roots of "Western European societal evolution". A concept of Europe by JenƑ SzƱcs

    JenƑ SzƱcs wrote his essay entitled Sketch on the three regions of Europe in the early 1980s in Hungary. During these years, a historically well-argued opinion emphasising a substantial difference between Central European and Eastern European societies was warmly received in various circles of the political opposition. In a wider European perspective SzƱcs used the old “liberty topos” which claims that the history of Europe is no other than the fulfillment of liberty. In his Sketch, SzƱcs does not only concentrate on questions concerning the Middle Ages in Western Europe. Yet it is this stream of thought which brought a new perspective to explaining European history. His picture of the Middle Ages represents well that there is a way to integrate all typical Western motifs of post-war self-definition into a single theory. Mainly, the “liberty motif”, as a sign of “Europeanism” – in the interpretation of Bibó’s concept, Anglo-saxon Marxists and Weber’s social theory –, developed from medieval concepts of state and society and from an analysis of economic and social structures. SzƱcs’s historical aspect was a typical intellectual product of the 1980s: this was the time when a few Central European historians started to outline non-Marxist aspects of social theory and categories of modernisation theories, but concealing them with Marxist terminology
