Development of ambient temperature secondary lithium cells
JPL is developing ambient temperature secondary lithium cells for future spacecraft applications. Prior studies on experimental laboratory type Li-TiS2 cells yielded promising results in terms of cycle life and rate capability. To further assess the performance of this cell, 5 Ah engineering model cells were developed. Initially baseline cells were designed and fabricated. Each cell had 15 cathodes and 16 anodes and the ratio of anode to cathode capacity is 6:1. A solution of 1.5 molar LiAsF6 in 2Me-THF was used as the electrolyte. Cells were evaluated for their cycle life at C/1 and C/5 discharge rates and 100 percent depth of discharge. The cells were cycled between voltage limits 1.7 and 2.8 volts. The rate of charge in all cases is C/10. The results obtained indicate that cells can operate at C/10 to C/2 discharge rates and have an initial energy density of 70 Wh/kg. Cells delivered more than 100 cycles at C/2 discharge rate. The details of cell design, the test program, and the results obtained are described
SUSY QCD Corrections to Higgs Pair Production from Bottom Quark Fusion
We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total
cross section for inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion at
the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the minimal supersymmetric standard
model (MSSM) and the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA). We emphasize the
contributions of squark and gluino loops (SQCD) and the decoupling properties
of our results for heavy squark and gluino masses. The enhanced couplings of
the b quark to the Higgs bosons in supersymmetric models with large tanb yield
large NLO SQCD corrections in some regions of parameter space.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figure
Renormalized broken-symmetry Schwinger-Dyson equations and the 2PI-1/N expansion for the O(N) model
We derive the renormalized Schwinger-Dyson equations for the one- and
two-point functions in the auxiliary field formulation of
field theory to order 1/N in the 2PI-1/N expansion. We show that the
renormalization of the broken-symmetry theory depends only on the counter terms
of the symmetric theory with . We find that the 2PI-1/N expansion
violates the Goldstone theorem at order 1/N. In using the O(4) model as a low
energy effective field theory of pions to study the time evolution of
disoriented chiral condensates one has to {\em{explicitly}} break the O(4)
symmetry to give the physical pions a nonzero mass. In this effective theory
the {\em additional} small contribution to the pion mass due to the violation
of the Goldstone theorem in the 2-PI-1/N equations should be numerically
unimportant
QCD Corrections to Production of Higgs Pseudoscalars
Models of electroweak symmetry breaking with more than a single doublet of
Higgs scalars contain a neutral pseudoscalar boson. The production of such a
pseudoscalar in hadron collisions proceeds primarily via gluon fusion through a
top-quark loop (except for those models in which the pseudoscalar coupling to
bottom quarks is strongly enhanced). We compute the QCD corrections to this
process in the heavy-quark limit, using an effective Lagrangian derived from

Exact and approximate dynamics of the quantum mechanical O(N) model
We study a quantum dynamical system of N, O(N) symmetric, nonlinear
oscillators as a toy model to investigate the systematics of a 1/N expansion.
The closed time path (CTP) formalism melded with an expansion in 1/N is used to
derive time evolution equations valid to order 1/N (next-to-leading order). The
effective potential is also obtained to this order and its properties
areelucidated. In order to compare theoretical predictions against numerical
solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we consider two initial
conditions consistent with O(N) symmetry, one of them a quantum roll, the other
a wave packet initially to one side of the potential minimum, whose center has
all coordinates equal. For the case of the quantum roll we map out the domain
of validity of the large-N expansion. We discuss unitarity violation in the 1/N
expansion; a well-known problem faced by moment truncation techniques. The 1/N
results, both static and dynamic, are also compared to those given by the
Hartree variational ansatz at given values of N. We conclude that late-time
behavior, where nonlinear effects are significant, is not well-described by

A Case History of Liquefaction Flow Failures in Mountains Mine Waste Dumps
Over the past 25 years there have been a large number of flowslides in Rocky Mountain coal mine waste dumps located in British Columbia, Canada. The flowslides occurred rapidly and displayed surprisingly long distance of runout up to 2 km. Detailed field, laboratory studies, and analyses indicate that static collapse of saturated or nearly saturated sandy gravel layers within the dumps are responsible for the initial failure and ensuing flow failures. In addition to field and laboratory studies, finite element analyses were carried out on three case histories. The analysis results indicated that the flow like liquefaction failures of these waste dumps can be triggered by gradually raising of perched water tables contained within thin layers or poorly draining waste material in these slopes. This paper reviews the site condition and failure pattern observed in the mountainous mine waste dumps and investigates the mechanism of static liquefaction failure by finite element methods
Like Sign Dilepton Signature for R-Parity Violating SUSY Search at the Tevatron Collider
The like sign dileptons provide the most promising signature for
superparticle search in a large category of -parity violating SUSY models.
We estimate the like sign dilepton signals at the Tevatron collider, predicted
by these models, over a wide region of the MSSM parameter space. One expects an

Small animal disease surveillance: respiratory disease 2017
This report focuses on surveillance for respiratory disease in companion animals. It begins with an analysis of data from 392 veterinary practices contributing to the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) between January and December 2017.
The following section describes canine respiratory coronavirus infections in dogs, presenting results from laboratory-confirmed cases across the country between January 2010 and December 2017. This is followed by an update on the temporal trends of three important syndromes in companion animals, namely gastroenteritis, pruritus and respiratory disease, from 2014 to 2017.
A fourth section presents a brief update on Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus in companion animals. The final section summarises some recent developments pertinent to companion animal health, namely eyeworm (Thelazzia callipaeda) infestations in dogs imported to the UK and canine influenza virus in the USA and Canada
