    Answering Developmental Questions Using Secondary Data

    Secondary data analysis of large longitudinal and national data sets is a standard method used in many social sciences to answer complex questions regarding behavior. In this article, we detail the advantages of using these data sets to study developmental questions across the life span. First, we provide an overview of how using secondary data can increase studies' scientific integrity. Then, we detail where and how data sets can be obtained that answer specific questions. Finally, we discuss methodological issues related to using longitudinal, population data sets.     An Innovative Approach for Community Engagement: Using an Audience Response System

    Community-based participatory research methods allow for community engagement in the effort to reduce cancer health disparities. Community engagement involves health professionals becoming a part of the community in order to build trust, learn from the community and empower them to reduce disparities through their own initiatives and ideas. Audience Response Systems (ARS) are an innovative and engaging way to involve the community and obtain data for research purposes using keypads to report results via power point. The use of ARS within communities is very limited and serves to widen the disparity gap by not delivering new advances in medical knowledge and technology among all population groups. ARS was implemented at a community town hall event sponsored by a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Exploratory Center of Excellence, the Center for Equal Health. Participants appreciated being able to see how everyone else answered and felt included in the research process. ARS is beneficial because the community can answer truthfully and provides instant research results. Additionally, researchers can collect large amounts of data quickly, in a non-threatening way while tracking individual responses anonymously. Audience Response Systems proved to be an effective tool for successfully accomplishing community-based participatory research

    Many institutions of higher education are searching/or ways to augment specific areas of a student-athlete's life: such as study skills, fitness awareness, or disordered eating. East Stroudsburg University has developed a model that provided the additional support systems with the goal of developing not only a more competitive athlete but also a more mature and responsible member of the university community. This model included a physical and psycho-social component. A multi-discipline staff attempted to encourage the student-athletes with the life skills and the interaction to develop these tools for their life after college

    Factors Influencing African American Youths\u27 Decisions to Stay in School

    Little attention has been given to the non-problematic development and positive life decisions of African American youth. This paper reports findings of 231 African American students. The goal of the study was to assess factors which contribute to their academic grade point averages and intentions to stay in school. The conceptual model employed in this study was the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) which contends that intentions to carryout a behavior is a function of Attitude towards the behavior, Social Normative support for undertaking the behavior, and the Perceived Control of being able to carry out the behavior. In addition to the TPB components, the contributions of self-esteem and racial self-esteem were also examined for their influence on academic strivings. The TPB model did predict well studentā€™s intentions to stay in school, but predicted less well student grade point averages. Self-esteem was also a significant predictor of intentions to stay in school, but was not a significant predictor of gpa. Racial self-esteem was observed to be only marginally significant, but as predicted, was negatively associated with student Intentions to stay in school. However racial self esteem was not observed to be a significant predictor of student gpa. Hence students with positive self-esteem, who have favorable attitudes towards school and perceive fewer barriers to completing school are most likely to do so. But, the negative association between racial self-esteem and academic intentions suggests that some African American youths may need be convinced that academic success is not an act of racial betrayal

    Nucleosynthetic vanadium isotope heterogeneity of the early solar system recorded in chondritic meteorites

However, because V only possesses two stable isotopes it is difficult to distinguish irradiation from other processes such as stable isotope fractionation and nucleosynthetic heterogeneity that could also cause V isotope variation. Here we perform the first detailed investigation of V isotopes in ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites to investigate the origin of any variation. We also perform a three-laboratory inter-calibration for chondrites, which confirms that the different chemical separation protocols do not induce V isotope analytical artifacts as long as samples are measured using medium resolution multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MCICPMS). Vanadium isotope compositions (51V/50V) of carbonaceous chondrites correlate with previously reported nucleosynthetically derived excesses in 54Cr. Both 51V and 54Cr are the most neutron-rich of their respective elements, which may suggest that pre-solar grains rich in r-process isotopes is the primary cause of the V-Cr isotope correlation. Vanadium isotope ratios of ordinary chondrite groups and Earth form a weaker correlation with 54Cr that has a different slope than observed for carbonaceous chondrites. The offset between carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous meteorites in V-Cr isotope space is similar to differences also reported for chromium, titanium, oxygen, molybdenum and ruthenium isotopes, which has been inferred to reflect the presence in the early solar system of two physically separated reservoirs. The V isotope composition of Earth is heavier than any meteorite measured to date. Therefore, V isotopes support models of Earth accretion in which a significant portion of Earth was formed from material that is not present in our meteorite collections.This study was funded by NASA Emerging Worlds grant NNX16AD36G to SGN

    A Randomized Controlled Trial of Online Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Improve Diet and Physical Activity Among Adults Who Are Overweight/Obese

    Background: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has shown benefit for improving diet, physical activity, and weight among adults who are overweight and obese. However, research to date in this area has primarily evaluated ACT delivered through in-person interventions, which has more limited access relative to online formats. Purpose: The present study evaluated an online guided self-help program that integrated ACT with nutrition education to improve healthy eating and physical activity. Methods: A sample of 79 adults who were overweight/obese were randomized to receive the 8-week ACT on Health program plus weekly phone coaching or to a waitlist. Results: Participants completed 5.5 ACT sessions on average (out of 8) and reported moderately high program satisfaction. Participants in the ACT condition improved significantly more than the waitlist at posttreatment on the primary outcome of healthy eating index (HEI; based on 24-hour recall assessments) and almost all secondary outcomes assessing self-reported eating behaviors, weight, mental health, weight self-stigma, and psychological inflexibility. However, no intervention effects were found for self-reported physical activity. At 8-week follow-up, improvements were maintained for most outcomes in the ACT condition, but not for the HEI. Improvements in psychological inflexibility mediated treatment effects on some outcomes, but not HEI or weight. Conclusions: Overall, delivering ACT through online guided self-help combined with nutrition education appears promising for improving healthy eating, weight, and self-stigma, but results for physical activity and long-term behavior change are unclear, possibly due to limitations in the ACT on Health program

    A phase III trial comparing an anionic phospholipid-based cream and aloe vera-based gel in the prevention of radiation dermatitis in pediatric patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of radiation therapy (RT). In severe cases, RT must be interrupted until the skin heals, which can compromise treatment. The purpose of the study was to compare an anionic polar phospholipid (APP)-based cream and an aloe vera-based gel to determine their effectiveness in preventing and treating radiation dermatitis.</p> <p>Patients and methods</p> <p>Forty-five pediatric patients (median age, 11 years) with various diagnoses who received at least 23.4 Gy participated. APP cream and aloe vera gel were symmetrically applied within the irradiated field after each treatment. Three measures were collected before, during and after completion of treatment: subject's skin comfort, dermatologic assessment, and common toxicity criteria (CTC).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant differences in specific variables favoring APP cream use were noted in some patients including skin comfort variables, dry (<it>p </it>= 0.002), soft (<it>p </it>= 0.057), feels good (<it>p </it>= 0.002), rough (<it>p </it>= 0.065), smooth (<it>p = 0.012</it>) and dermatologic variables, dryness (<it>p </it>= 0.013), erythema (<it>p </it>= 0.002) and peely (<it>p </it>= 0.008). Grouped CTC scores were supportive of APP cream (<it>p </it>= 0.004). In comparing the first and last assessments, two dermatologic variables, dryness (<it>p </it>= 0.035) and peely (<it>p </it>= 0.016), favored APP cream.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>APP cream is more effective than aloe vera-based gel for prevention and treatment of radiation dermatitis.</p

    An Open Trial of Group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) With an Adjunctive Mobile App for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

    Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common and debilitating condition. Effective treatments exist, but they are time-and resource-intensive. This study tested the initial efficacy and acceptability of a novel treatment protocol designed to increase efficiency: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) taught in groups and through an adjunctive mobile app. Participants were 21 individuals with GAD who received six weeks of 2-hour group ACT sessions as well as access to an adjunctive ACT mobile app. Significant improvements occurred in worry, anxiety, social functioning, and depression as well as relevant processes (psychological inflexibility, anxiety-related cognitive fusion). In-the-moment improvements were also observed in symptoms and ACT processes immediately after completing mobile app sessions. Treatment was perceived as credible and acceptable overall. However, rates of reliable and clinically significant change were low, and app usage did not correlate with change in worry. Overall, this study suggests that an efficient, brief ACT group intervention combined with a mobile app may lead to improvements in GAD but may not be sufficient for clinically significant change. A detailed overview of the treatment is included, and guidance for clinicians interested in implementing this protocol is discussed

    VEGF signaling mediates bladder neuroplasticity and inflammation in response to BCG

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This work tests the hypothesis that increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) observed during bladder inflammation modulates nerve plasticity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Chronic inflammation was induced by intravesical instillations of Bacillus Calmette-GuƩrin (BCG) into the urinary bladder and the density of nerves expressing the transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily 1 (TRPV1) or pan-neuronal marker PGP9.5 was used to quantify alterations in peripheral nerve plasticity. Some mice were treated with B20, a VEGF neutralizing antibody to reduce the participation of VEGF. Additional mice were treated systemically with antibodies engineered to specifically block the binding of VEGF to NRP1 (anti-NRP1<sup>B</sup>) and NRP2 (NRP2<sup>B</sup>), or the binding of semaphorins to NRP1 (anti-NRP1 <sup>A</sup>) to diminish activity of axon guidance molecules such as neuropilins (NRPs) and semaphorins (SEMAs). To confirm that VEGF is capable of inducing inflammation and neuronal plasticity, another group of mice was instilled with recombinant VEGF<sub>165 </sub>or VEGF<sub>121 </sub>into the urinary bladder.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The major finding of this work was that chronic BCG instillation resulted in inflammation and an overwhelming increase in both PGP9.5 and TRPV1 immunoreactivity, primarily in the sub-urothelium of the urinary bladder. Treatment of mice with anti-VEGF neutralizing antibody (B20) abolished the effect of BCG on inflammation and nerve density.</p> <p>NRP1<sup>A </sup>and NRP1<sup>B </sup>antibodies, known to reduce BCG-induced inflammation, failed to block BCG-induced increase in nerve fibers. However, the NRP2<sup>B </sup>antibody dramatically potentiated the effects of BCG in increasing PGP9.5-, TRPV1-, substance P (SP)-, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactivity (IR). Finally, instillation of VEGF<sub>121 </sub>or VEGF<sub>165 </sub>into the mouse bladder recapitulated the effects of BCG and resulted in a significant inflammation and increase in nerve density.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>For the first time, evidence is being presented supporting that chronic BCG instillation into the mouse bladder promotes a significant increase in peripheral nerve density that was mimicked by VEGF instillation. Effects of BCG were abolished by pre-treatment with neutralizing VEGF antibody. The present results implicate the VEGF pathway as a key modulator of inflammation and nerve plasticity, introduces a new animal model for investigation of VEGF-induced nerve plasticity, and suggests putative mechanisms underlying this phenomenon.</p
