    Consonant Correspondences Of Burmese, Rakhine And Marma With Initial Implications For Historical Relationships

    This thesis provides a consonantal comparison of the Burmese, Rakhine and Marma languages of Myanmar and Bangladesh, with primary focus on initial and medial consonants. Its main purposes are to provide new data from the Rakhine and Marma languages of Bangladesh and to make some initial observations about the historical relationship between the three languages based on compiled consonant correspondences. Although much literature is available on the Burmese language as the primary representative of the Southern Burmish languages, little information is available on Rakhine and Marma. This thesis thus extends previous work on the family tree to these two close relatives. It compares new Rakhine and Marma wordlist data from Bangladesh to previously-collected Burmese and Rakhine data from Myanmar. It identifies cognate forms and regular sound correspondences, as well as exceptions, with reference to previously documented Burmese sound changes. Marma is more conservative than Burmese or Rakhine in retaining the pronunciation indicated by Written Burmese orthography; in some cases, this is a direct reflex of reconstructed Proto-Tibeto-Burman. Burmese and Rakhine share innovations that are not found in Marma. These may indicate that modern Burmese and Rakhine are a subgroup of the branch containing Marma, although some similarities of Rakhine and Burmese may instead be due to geographic and sociolinguistic factors, or borrowings from Burmese into Rakhine. The Rakhine variety of Bangladesh differs somewhat from the Rakhine of Myanmar, which bears a few more superficial similarities to Spoken Burmese

    Assistive listening headsets for high noise environments: Protection and communication

    © 2015 IEEE. In industrial noise environments, the use of assistive listening headsets is a means to provide adequate access to voice communication while wearing hearing protection. This paper presents a performance evaluation and comparison of two different methods to provide the binaural speech enhancement in real industrial noise scenarios. The investigated binaural methods based on differential beamforming and multichannel Wiener filter show different strengths and weaknesses. A transient noise suppression algorithm is also proposed and evaluated. Performance evaluation shows that this algorithm, together with the binaural multi-channel Wiener filter approach, can successfully reduce the hammering noise. This can be observed from the PESQ scores and the signal characteristics

    A modern coastal ocean observing system using data from advanced satellite and in situ sensors – an example

    Report of the Ocean Observation Research Coordination Network In-situ-Satellite Observation Working GroupThis report is intended to illustrate and provide recommendations for how ocean observing systems of the next decade could focus on coastal environments using combined satellite and in situ measurements. Until recently, space-based observations have had surface footprints typically spanning hundreds of meters to kilometers. These provide excellent synoptic views for a wide variety of ocean characteristics. In situ observations are instead generally point or linear measurements. The interrelation between space-based and in-situ observations can be challenging. Both are necessary and as sensors and platforms evolve during the next decade, the trend to facilitate interfacing space and in-situ observations must continue and be expanded. In this report, we use coastal observation and analyses to illustrate an observing system concept that combines in situ and satellite observing technologies with numerical models to quantify subseasonal time scale transport of freshwater and its constituents from terrestrial water storage bodies across and along continental shelves, as well as the impacts on some key biological/biogeochemical properties of coastal waters.Ocean Research Coordination Network and the National Science Foundatio

    Antibiotic-resistant Escherichia Coli from Retail Poultry Meat with Different Antibiotic Use Claims

    Background We sought to determine if the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli differed across retail poultry products and among major production categories, including organic, “raised without antibiotics”, and conventional. Results We collected all available brands of retail chicken and turkey—including conventional, “raised without antibiotic”, and organic products—every two weeks from January to December 2012. In total, E. coli was recovered from 91% of 546 turkey products tested and 88% of 1367 chicken products tested. The proportion of samples contaminated with E. coli was similar across all three production categories. Resistance prevalence varied by meat type and was highest among E. coli isolates from turkey for the majority of antibiotics tested. In general, production category had little effect on resistance prevalence among E. coli isolates from chicken, although resistance to gentamicin and multidrug resistance did vary. In contrast, resistance prevalence was significantly higher for 6 of the antibiotics tested—and multidrug resistance—among isolates from conventional turkey products when compared to those labelled organic or “raised without antibiotics”. E. coli isolates from chicken varied strongly in resistance prevalence among different brands within each production category. Conclusion The high prevalence of resistance among E. coli isolates from conventionally-raised turkey meat suggests greater antimicrobial use in conventional turkey production as compared to “raised without antibiotics” and organic systems. However, among E. coli from chicken meat, resistance prevalence was more strongly linked to brand than to production category, which could be caused by brand-level differences during production and/or processing, including variations in antimicrobial use

    Algal amendment enhances biogenic methane production from coals of different thermal maturity

    The addition of small amounts of algal biomass to stimulate methane production in coal seams is a promising low carbon renewable coalbed methane enhancement technique. However, little is known about how the addition of algal biomass amendment affects methane production from coals of different thermal maturity. Here, we show that biogenic methane can be produced from five coals ranging in rank from lignite to low-volatile bituminous using a coal-derived microbial consortium in batch microcosms with and without algal amendment. The addition of 0.1 g/l algal biomass resulted in maximum methane production rates up to 37 days earlier and decreased the time required to reach maximum methane production by 17–19 days when compared to unamended, analogous microcosms. Cumulative methane production and methane production rate were generally highest in low rank, subbituminous coals, but no clear association between increasing vitrinite reflectance and decreasing methane production could be determined. Microbial community analysis revealed that archaeal populations were correlated with methane production rate (p = 0.01), vitrinite reflectance (p = 0.03), percent volatile matter (p = 0.03), and fixed carbon (p = 0.02), all of which are related to coal rank and composition. Sequences indicative of the acetoclastic methanogenic genus Methanosaeta dominated low rank coal microcosms. Amended treatments that had increased methane production relative to unamended analogs had high relative abundances of the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic genus Methanobacterium and the bacterial family Pseudomonadaceae. These results suggest that algal amendment may shift coal-derived microbial communities towards coal-degrading bacteria and CO2- reducing methanogens. These results have broad implications for understanding subsurface carbon cycling in coal beds and the adoption of low carbon renewable microbially enhanced coalbed methane techniques across a diverse range of coal geology

    Effects of High-Probability Request Sequences on Preschoolers' Compliance and Disruptive Behavior

    A high-probability request sequence was implemented with three preschool children with developmental delays within their classroom during typical activities. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used to evaluate the effects of the high-probability request sequence on compliant responding to low-probability requests and the occurrence of disruptive behavior. Results of the study indicate that the use of the high-probability request sequence was effective in increasing compliant responding to low-probability requests delivered by two different trainers for all children. No increases in disruptive behavior were noted as a result of using the high-probability request sequence.     Nitric oxide precursors and congenital heart surgery: A randomized controlled trial of oral citrulline

    ObjectiveThe study sought to determine whether citrulline supplementation, a precursor to nitric oxide synthesis, is safe and efficacious in increasing plasma citrulline concentrations and decreasing the risk of postoperative pulmonary hypertension.Study DesignForty children, undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass and at risk for pulmonary hypertension, were randomized to receive 5 perioperative doses (1.9 g/m2 per dose) of either oral citrulline or placebo. Plasma citrulline and arginine concentrations were measured at 5 time points. Measurements of systemic blood pressure and presence of pulmonary hypertension were collected.ResultsMedian citrulline concentrations were significantly higher in the citrulline group versus the placebo group immediately postoperatively (36 ÎĽmol/L vs 26 ÎĽmol/L, P = .012) and at 12 hours postoperatively (37 ÎĽmol/L vs 20 ÎĽmol/L, P = .015). Mean plasma arginine concentrations were significantly higher in the citrulline group versus the placebo group by 12 hours postoperatively (36 ÎĽmol/L vs 23 ÎĽmol/L, P = .037). Mean systemic blood pressure did not differ between groups (P = .53). Postoperative pulmonary hypertension developed in 9 patients, 6 of 20 (30%) in the placebo group and 3 of 20 (15%) in the citrulline group (P = .451), all of whom had plasma citrulline concentrations less than age-specific norms. Postoperative pulmonary hypertension did not develop in patients who demonstrated plasma citrulline concentrations in excess of 37 ÎĽmol/L (P = .036).ConclusionsOral citrulline supplementation safely increased plasma citrulline and arginine concentrations compared with placebo after cardiopulmonary bypass. Postoperative pulmonary hypertension did not occur in children with naturally elevated citrulline levels or elevations through supplementation. Oral citrulline supplementation may be effective in reducing postoperative pulmonary hypertension

    Prevalence and microbiological characteristics of clinically infected foot-ulcers in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A retrospective exploratory study

    Background: The prevalence of foot ulcers in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported at almost 10 %. These foot ulcers often occur at multiple sites and are reoccurring, with the potential risk of infection increased due to RA diagnosis and disease modifying medications. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of clinical infection in foot-ulcers of patients with RA; describe the microbiological characteristics and investigate risk factors. Methods: Retrospective clinical data was collected for all patients attending a rheumatology foot ulcer clinic between 1st May 2012 and 1st May 2013: wound swab data was collected from those with clinical infection. Results: Twenty-eight patients with RA and foot-ulcers were identified; eight of these patients had clinical infection and wound swabs taken (29 %). Of these eight patients there were equal men and women, with median age 74 years, and average disease duration 22 years. Cardiovascular disease/peripheral-vascular disease (CVD/PVD) were reported in six patients, diabetes in two patients. Six patients were treated with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs); three were on biologic medications and two on steroids. Five wound swabs cultured skin flora, one staphylococcus aureus, one had no growth after culture; and one was rejected due to labelling error. Conclusion: Almost a third of people with RA and foot ulcers attending clinic over one year had clinical infection, however microbiological analysis failed to isolate pathogens in six of seven wound swabs. This may be due to inaccurate diagnosis of ulcer infection or to issues with sampling, collection, transport, analysis or reporting. There was insufficient data to relate risk of clinical infection with risk factors. Further research is required to identify the most appropriate techniques for infection diagnosis, wound sampling and processing.     Pharmacokinetics and safety of intravenously administered citrulline in children undergoing congenital heart surgery: Potential therapy for postoperative pulmonary hypertension

    ObjectivePulmonary hypertension may complicate surgical correction of congenital heart defects, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. We have previously shown that plasma levels of the nitric oxide precursors citrulline and arginine drop precipitously after congenital cardiac surgery and that oral citrulline supplementation may be protective against the development of pulmonary hypertension. In this study, we assessed the safety and pharmacokinetic profile of intravenous citrulline as a potential therapy for postoperative pulmonary hypertension.MethodsThe initial phase of this investigation was a dose-escalation study of intravenously administered citrulline in infants and children undergoing one of five congenital cardiac surgical procedures (phase 1). The primary safety outcome was a 20% drop in mean arterial blood pressure from the baseline pressure recorded after admission to the intensive care unit. Based on our previous work, the target circulating plasma citrulline trough was 80 to 100 μmol/L. Each patient was given two separate doses of citrulline: the first in the operating room immediately after initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass and the second 4 hours later in the pediatric intensive care unit. Stepwise dose escalations included 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, and 150 mg/kg. After model-dependent pharmacokinetic analysis, we enrolled an additional 9 patients (phase 2) in an optimized dosing protocol that replaced the postoperative dose with a continuous infusion of citrulline at 9 mg/(kg·h) for 48 hours postoperatively.ResultsThe initial stepwise escalation protocol (phase 1) revealed that an intravenous citrulline dose of 150 mg/kg given after initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass yielded a trough level of in the target range of approximately 80 to 100 μmol/L 4 hours later. The postoperative dose revealed that the clearance of intravenously administered citrulline was 0.6 L/(h·kg), with a volume of distribution of 0.9 L/kg and estimated half-life of 60 minutes. Because of the short half-life, we altered the protocol to replace the postoperative dose with a continuous infusion of 9 mg/(kg·h). An additional 9 patients were studied with this continuous infusion protocol (phase 2). Mean plasma citrulline levels were maintained at approximately 125 μmol/L, with a calculated clearance of 0.52 L/(h·kg). None of the 17 patients studied had a 20% drop in mean arterial blood pressure from baseline.ConclusionsIn this first report of the use of intravenous citrulline in humans, we found citrulline to be both safe and well tolerated in infants and young children undergoing congenital cardiac surgery. Because of the rapid clearance, the optimal dosing regimen was identified as an initial bolus of 150 mg/kg given at the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass, followed 4 hours later by a postoperative infusion of 9 mg/(kg·h) continued up to 48 hours. Using this regimen, plasma arginine, citrulline, and nitric oxide metabolite levels were well maintained. Intravenous citrulline needs to be studied further as a potential therapy for postoperative pulmonary hypertension

    A multicenter study of acute testicular torsion in the time of COVID-19

    Background: Testicular torsion is a surgical emergency, and time to detorsion is imperative for testicular salvage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients may delay emergency care due to stay-at-home orders and concern of COVID-19 exposure. Objective: To assess whether emergency presentation for testicular torsion was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether the rate of orchiectomy increased compared to a retrospective period. Study design: Patients were prospectively enrolled in a multicenter study from seven institutions in the United States and Canada. Inclusion criteria were patients two months to 18 years of age with acute testicular torsion from March through July 2020. The retrospective group included patients from January 2019 through February 2020. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal–Wallis tests, Chi-square tests, and logistic regression. Results: A total of 221 patients were included: 84 patients in the COVID-19 cohort and 137 in the retrospective cohort. Median times from symptom onset to emergency department presentation during COVID-19 compared to the retrospective period were 17.9 h (IQR 5.5–48.0) and 7.5 h (IQR 4.0–28.0) respectively (p = 0.04). In the COVID-19 cohort, 42% of patients underwent orchiectomy compared to 29% of pre-pandemic controls (p = 0.06). During COVID-19, 46% of patients endorsed delay in presentation compared to 33% in the retrospective group (p = 0.04). Discussion: We found a significantly longer time from testicular torsion symptom onset to presentation during the pandemic and a higher proportion of patients reported delaying care. Strengths of the study include the number of included patients and the multicenter prospective design during the pandemic. Limitations include a retrospective pre-pandemic comparison group. Conclusions: In a large multicenter study we found a significantly longer time from testicular torsion symptom onset to presentation during the pandemic and a significantly higher proportion of patients reported delaying care. Based on the findings of this study, more patient education is needed on the management of testicular torsion during a pandemic
