The ℓ2\ell^2-homology of even Coxeter groups

Given a Coxeter system (W,S), there is an associated CW-complex, Sigma, on which W acts properly and cocompactly. We prove that when the nerve L of (W,S) is a flag triangulation of the 3-sphere, then the reduced ℓ2\ell^2-homology of Sigma vanishes in all but the middle dimension.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

Gross Job Flows in Ukraine: Size, Ownership and Trade Effects

This paper documents and analyses gross job flows and their determinants in Ukraine using a unique data set of more than 2200 Ukrainian firms operating in both the manufacturing and the non-manufacturing sector for the years 1998-2000. There are several important findings in the paper. Job destruction is dominating job creation in both 1999 and 2000. In connection with other evidence we infer from this that Ukraine is only at the beginning of the restructuring process. The most clear-cut result of our analysis is the strong positive effect of new private firms on net employment growth, a finding established for other transition economies as well. At the same time, we do not find differences in the employment growth of state-owned and privatised firms. Apart from ownership effects we also find, at the firm level, an inverse correlation of size and net employment growth and of size and job reallocation. Finally, we establish that strong foreign trade links force firms to shed labour more aggressively and to engage in more restructuring when trade is directed to and originating from Western economies. This disciplining function is absent when the trade flows are confined to CIS countries.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39906/3/wp521.pd

Systematic variation of the 12CO/13CO ratio as a function of star-formation rate surface density

    Get PDF
We show that the12CO/13CO intensity ratio in nearby galaxies varies systematically as a function of the star formation rate surface density and gas surface density. The same effect is observed in different transitions, and in the 12CO/C18O ratio, while the 13CO/C18O ratio appears to remain constant as a function of the star formation rate surface density. We discuss the cause of these variations, considering both changes in the physical state of the gas, and chemical changes that lead to abundance variations. We used the observed correlations with C18O to suggest that abundance variations are unlikely to be causing the systematic trend observed with the star formation rate surface density, and thus that the mean gas temperature and/or velocity dispersion are systematically higher in higher star-formation rate surface density regions. We present the best fitting relations between the star formation rate surface density and the 12CO/13CO and 12CO/C18O ratios, and discuss how this effect can help us predict CO isotope emission from galaxies across the known universe.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRA

Literature Review on Counseling Groups for Social Phobia

    Get PDF
The practice of group counseling for individuals with social phobia is increasing and various therapies have been applied to develop comprehensive treatments. Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder diagnosed, and in adults, it is usually mediated strongly by hypervigilance, attentional avoidance, and heightened self-focused attention. The literature on group therapies for individuals with social phobia shows the most current and promising group therapies are cognitive-behavioral group therapy, social self-reappraisal therapy, task-concentration training, mindfulness-based stress reduction training, and acceptance and commitment therapy. The research on group therapy for social phobia has a lot of support but also has its limitations. The limitations include lack of multicultural participants and theoretical orientations, high attrition rates, and little focus on co-morbid diagnoses with social phobia. The future of group therapy for individuals with social phobia appears promising if the research continues to receive support and limitations are addressed

Configurations of Handles and the Classification of Divergences in the String Partition Function

The divergences that arise in the regularized partition function for closed bosonic string theory in flat space lead to three types of perturbation series expansions, distinguished by their genus dependence. This classification of infinities can be traced to geometrical characteristics of the string worldsheet. Some categories of divergences may be eliminated in string theories formulated on compact manifolds.Comment: 24 pages, DAMTP-R/94/1
