    Aubry sets for weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations

    We introduce a notion of Aubry set for weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations on the torus and characterize it as the region where the obstruction to the existence of globally strict critical subsolutions concentrates. As in the case of a single equation, we prove the existence of critical subsolutions which are strict and smooth outside the Aubry set. This allows us to derive in a simple way a comparison result among critical sub and supersolutions with respect to their boundary data on the Aubry set, showing in particular that the latter is a uniqueness set for the critical system. We also highlight some rigidity phenomena taking place on the Aubry set.Comment: 35 pages v.2 the introduction has been rewritten and shortened. Some proofs simplified.     I construct discrete and continuous crystal structures that are compatible with a given choice of dislocation density tensor, and (following Mal’cev) provide a canonical form for these discrete structures. The symmetries of the discrete structures extend uniquely to symmetries of corresponding continuous structures—I calculate these symmetries explicitly for a particular choice of dislocation density tensor and deduce corresponding constraints on energy functions which model defective crystals

    Radar-Based Analysis of Convective Storms overNorthwestern Italy

    Thunderstorms may cause large damages to infrastructures and population, therefore the possible identification of the areas with the highest occurrence of these events is especially relevant. Nevertheless, few extensive studies of these phenomena with high spatial and temporal resolution have been carried out in the Alps and none of them includes North-western Italy. To analyze thunderstorm events, the data of the meteorological radar network of the regional meteorological service of Piedmont region (ARPA Piemonte) have been used in this work. The database analyzed includes all thunderstorms occurred during the warm months (April to September) of a 6-year period (2005–2010). The tracks of each storm have been evaluated using a storm tracking algorithm. Several characteristics of the storms have been analyzed, such as the duration, the spatial and the temporaldistribution, the direction and the distance travelled. Obtained results revealed several important characteristics that may be useful for nowcasting purposes providing a first attempt of radar-based climatology in the considered region

    The sensitivity of Euro-Atlantic regimes to model horizontal resolution

    There is growing evidence that the atmospheric dynamics of the Euro-Atlantic sector during winter is driven in part by the presence of quasi-persistent regimes. However, general circulation models typically struggle to simulate these with, for example, an overly weakly persistent blocking regime. Previous studies have showed that increased horizontal resolution can improve the regime structure of a model but have so far only considered a single model with only one ensemble member at each resolution, leaving open the possibility that this may be either coincidental or model dependent. We show that the improvement in regime structure due to increased resolution is robust across multiple models with multiple ensemble members. However, while the high-resolution models have notably more tightly clustered data, other aspects of the regimes may not necessarily improve and are also subject to a large amount of sampling variability that typically requires at least three ensemble members to surmount

    Geometrical structure of two-dimensional crystals with non-constant dislocation density

    We outline mathematical methods which seem to be necessary in order to discuss crystal structures with non-constant dislocation density tensor(ddt) in some generality. It is known that, if the ddt is constant (in space), then material points can be identified with elements of a certain Lie group, with group operation determined in terms of the ddt - the dimension of the Lie group equals that of the ambient space in which the body resides, in that case. When the ddt is non-constant, there is also a relevant Lie group (given technical assumptions), but the dimension of the group is strictly greater than that of the ambient space. The group acts on the set of material points, and there is a non-trivial isotropy group associated with the group action. We introduce and discuss the requisite mathematical apparatus in the context of Davini's model of defective crystals, and focus on a particular case where the ddt is such that a three dimensional Lie group acts on a two dimensional crystal state - this allows us to construct corresponding discrete structures too

    Predictable decadal forcing of the North Atlantic jet speed by sub-polar North Atlantic sea surface temperatures

    It has been demonstrated that decadal variations in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) can be predicted by current forecast models. While Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) has been hypothesised as the source of this skill, the validity of this hypothesis and the pathways involved remain unclear. We show, using reanalysis and data from two forecast models, that the decadal predictability of the NAO can be entirely accounted for by the predictability of decadal variations in the speed of the North Atlantic eddy-driven jet, with no predictability of decadal variations in the jet latitude. The sub-polar North Atlantic (SPNA) is identified as the only obvious common source of an SST-based signal across the models and reanalysis, and the predictability of the jet speed is shown to be consistent with a forcing from the SPNA visible already within a single season. The pathway is argued to be tropospheric in nature, with the SPNA-associated heating extending up to the mid-troposphere, which alters the meridional temperature gradient around the climatological jet core. The relative roles of anthropogenic aerosol emissions and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at generating predictable SPNA variability are also discussed. The analysis is extensively supported by the novel use of a set of seasonal hindcasts spanning the 20th century and forced with prescribed SSTs.</p

    Serum levels of heat shock protein 27 in patients with acute ischemic stroke

    Expression of intracellular heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) rises in the brain of animal models of cerebral ischemia and stroke. Hsp27 is also released into the circulation and the aim of the present study was to investigated if serum Hsp27 (sHsp27) levels are altered in patients with acute ischemic stroke. sHsp27 was measured in 15 patients with acute ischemic stroke and in 14 control subjects comparable for age, sex, and cardiovascular risk factors. In patients, measurements were performed at admission and 1, 2, and 30 days thereafter. At admission, mean sHsp27 values were threefold higher in patients than in controls. In patients, sHsp27 values dropped after 24 h, rose again at 48 h, and markedly declined at 30 days, indicating the presence of a temporal trend of sHsp27 values following acute ischemic stroke
