Enabling participation of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and seldom-heard communities in health research: A case study from the SCAMP adolescent cohort study
Our inquiry investigated the barriers to, and facilitators for, the involvement of Black
and Minority Ethnic (BME) and ‘seldom-heard’ communities, in a study researching
the impact of mobile phone and wireless device usage on adolescents’ cognition,
behaviour and mental health. The aim was to co-produce solutions to increase
participation, and we used focus groups, telephone interviews, a community event
and a public and patient involvement (PPI) café to conduct the inquiry. Five themes
emerged from the data: two enablers – the value and benefits of research; and
three barriers – concerns about research and about communication, and practical
constraints. A central cross-cutting theme, the concept of trust, was evident from
the data, and extended across all themes, including across the solutions to nonparticipation.
When the data collection and analysis were completed, we ran
a symposium for researchers and members of the public to share our findings
and to co-produce solutions. The symposium generated ideas about improving
participation, including tailoring participant information, engaging with local
advocates and involving people in research design and delivery
A Graph Theoretic Approach for Object Shape Representation in Compositional Hierarchies Using a Hybrid Generative-Descriptive Model
A graph theoretic approach is proposed for object shape representation in a
hierarchical compositional architecture called Compositional Hierarchy of Parts
(CHOP). In the proposed approach, vocabulary learning is performed using a
hybrid generative-descriptive model. First, statistical relationships between
parts are learned using a Minimum Conditional Entropy Clustering algorithm.
Then, selection of descriptive parts is defined as a frequent subgraph
discovery problem, and solved using a Minimum Description Length (MDL)
principle. Finally, part compositions are constructed by compressing the
internal data representation with discovered substructures. Shape
representation and computational complexity properties of the proposed approach
and algorithms are examined using six benchmark two-dimensional shape image
datasets. Experiments show that CHOP can employ part shareability and indexing
mechanisms for fast inference of part compositions using learned shape
vocabularies. Additionally, CHOP provides better shape retrieval performance

Entanglement Dynamics in 1D Quantum Cellular Automata
Several proposed schemes for the physical realization of a quantum computer
consist of qubits arranged in a cellular array. In the quantum circuit model of
quantum computation, an often complex series of two-qubit gate operations is
required between arbitrarily distant pairs of lattice qubits. An alternative
model of quantum computation based on quantum cellular automata (QCA) requires
only homogeneous local interactions that can be implemented in parallel. This
would be a huge simplification in an actual experiment. We find some minimal
physical requirements for the construction of unitary QCA in a 1 dimensional
Ising spin chain and demonstrate optimal pulse sequences for information
transport and entanglement distribution. We also introduce the theory of
non-unitary QCA and show by example that non-unitary rules can generate

Law, politics and the governance of English and Scottish joint-stock companies 1600-1850
This article examines the impact of law on corporate governance by means of a case study of joint-stock enterprise in England and Scotland before 1850. Based on a dataset of over 450 company constitutions together with qualitative information on governance practice, it finds little evidence to support the hypothesis that common-law regimes such as England were more supportive of economic growth than civil-law jurisdictions such as Scotland: indeed, levels of shareholder protection were slightly stronger in the civil-law zone. Other factors, such as local political institutions, played a bigger role in shaping organisational forms and business practice
Initial State Interactions for -Proton Radiative Capture
The effects of the initial state interactions on the radiative
capture branching ratios are examined and found to be quite sizable. A general
coupled-channel formalism for both strong and electromagnetic channels using a
particle basis is presented, and applied to all the low energy data
with the exception of the {\it 1s} atomic level shift. Satisfactory fits are
obtained using vertex coupling constants for the electromagnetic channels that
are close to their expected SU(3) values.Comment: 16 pages, uses revte
2d Stringy Black Holes and Varying Constants
Motivated by the recent interest on models with varying constants and whether
black hole physics can constrain such theories, two-dimensional charged stringy
black holes are considered. We exploit the role of two-dimensional stringy
black holes as toy models for exploring paradoxes which may lead to constrains
on a theory. A two-dimensional charged stringy black hole is investigated in
two different settings. Firstly, the two-dimensional black hole is treated as
an isolated object and secondly, it is contained in a thermal environment. In
both cases, it is shown that the temperature and the entropy of the
two-dimensional charged stringy black hole are decreased when its electric
charge is increased in time. By piecing together our results and previous ones,
we conclude that in the context of black hole thermodynamics one cannot derive
any model independent constraints for the varying constants. Therefore, it
seems that there aren't any varying constant theories that are out of favor

Interplanetary and Geomagnetic Consequences of Interacting CMEs of 13-14 June 2012
We report on the kinematics of two interacting CMEs observed on 13 and 14
June 2012. Both CMEs originated from the same active region NOAA 11504. After
their launches which were separated by several hours, they were observed to
interact at a distance of 100 Rs from the Sun. The interaction led to a
moderate geomagnetic storm at the Earth with Dst index of approximately, -86
nT. The kinematics of the two CMEs is estimated using data from the Sun Earth
Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) onboard the Solar
Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). Assuming a head-on collision
scenario, we find that the collision is inelastic in nature. Further, the
signatures of their interaction are examined using the in situ observations
obtained by Wind and the Advance Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft. It is
also found that this interaction event led to the strongest sudden storm
commencement (SSC) (approximately 150 nT) of the present Solar Cycle 24. The
SSC was of long duration, approximately 20 hours. The role of interacting CMEs

Effect of delivery method on the efficacy of Salmonella vaccination in chickens
To investigate whether the efficacy of live vaccines is influenced by the mode of vaccine delivery, a widely-used UK live commercial Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine was delivered to pullet chicks either by spray, in drinking water, or in combination with a bivalent vaccine containing inactivated Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. The birds were subsequently challenged with 102 or 108 colony-forming units (cfu) of Salmonella Enteritidis through drinking water at either six or 20 weeks of age. Ten days after the challenge, the birds were euthanased and their caecal contents cultured for Salmonella. All of the vaccinated groups contained fewer Salmonella Enteritidis-positive birds than the unvaccinated groups. The ‘spray-vaccinated’ group contained significantly fewer Salmonella Enteritidis-positive birds than the ‘water-vaccinated’ group after challenge with 108 cfu at 20 weeks. However, there was little or no difference at the other challenge time points between the groups that received vaccine through different modes of delivery
