    The age related prevalence of aggression and self-injury in persons with an intellectual disability: A review

    The aim of this study was to analyse statistically published data regarding the age related prevalence of aggression and self-injury in persons with intellectual disability. Studies including prevalence data for aggression and/or self-injury broken down by age band were identified and relative risk analyses conducted to generate indices of age related change. Despite conflicting results, the analysis conducted on included studies considered to be the most methodologically robust indicated that the relative risk of self-injury, and to a lesser extent aggression, increased with age until mid-adulthood, with some indication of a curvilinear relationship for self-injury. These conclusions have implications for the understanding of the development of different forms of challenging behavior and the importance of early intervention strategies

    Probing the Low Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Virgo Cluster

    We have used public data from the Next Generation Virgo Survey (NGVS) to investigate the dwarf galaxy population of the Virgo cluster beyond what has previously been discovered. We initially mask and smooth the data, and then use the object detection algorithm Sextractor to make our initial dwarf galaxy selection. All candidates are then visually inspected to remove artefacts and duplicates. We derive Sextractor parameters to best select low surface brightness galaxies using g band central surface brightness values of 22.5 to 26.0 mag sq arc sec and exponential scale lengths of 3.0 - 10.0 arc sec to identify 443 cluster dwarf galaxies - 303 of which are new detections. These new detections have a surface density that decreases with radius from the cluster centre. We also apply our selection algorithm to 'background', non-cluster, fields and find zero detections. In combination, this leads us to believe that we have isolated a cluster dwarf galaxy population. The range of objects we are able to detect is limited because smaller scale sized galaxies are confused with the background, while larger galaxies are split into numerous smaller objects by the detection algorithm. Using data from previous surveys combined with our data, we find a faint end slope to the luminosity function of -1.35+/-0.03, which does not significantly differ to what has previously been found for the Virgo cluster, but is a little steeper than the slope for field galaxies. There is no evidence for a faint end slope steep enough to correspond with galaxy formation models, unless those models invoke either strong feedback processes or use warm dark matter.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Development of improved electroforming technique

    Techniques were studied to reinforce or strengthen electroformed nickel to allow a fuller utilization of electroforming as a reliable and low cost fabrication technique for regenerately cooled thrust chambers. Techniques for wire wrapping while electrodepositing were developed that can result in a structurally strong wall with less weight than a conventional electroformed wall. Also a technique of codepositing submicron sized THO2 particles with the nickel to form a dispersion strengthened structure was evaluated. The standard nickel cylinders exhibited an average hoop strength of 80,000 psi with a yield strength of 65,000 psi and a modulus of 25.6 x 10 to the 6th power psi. The as produced dispersion strengthened nickel showed a hoop strength of 97,000 psi with a yield strength of 67,000 psi. This is an increase of 17,000 psi or 21% over the standard nickel hoop strength. The wire wrapping cylinders showed an increased strength over the standard nickel test samples of 26,000 to 66,800 psi which is in the range of 26 to 104% increase in strength over the base standard nickel. These latter test results are indicative of a volume percent wire reinforcement from 15 to 31. The measured hoop strengths agree with calculated composite strengths based upon rule of mixtures

    Skyrmion vibrational energies with a generalized mass term

    We study various properties of a one parameter mass term for the Skyrme model, originating from the works of Kopeliovich, Piette and Zakrzewski, through the use of axially symmetric solutions obtained numerically by simulated-annealing. These solutions allow us to observe asymptotic behaviors of the B=2 binding energies that differ to those previously obtained. We also decipher the characteristics of three distinct vibrational modes that appear as eigenstates of the vibrational Hamiltonian. This analysis further examine the assertion that the one parameter mass term offers a better account of baryonic matter than the traditional mass term.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    The most massive galaxies in clusters are already fully grown at z0.5z \sim 0.5

    By constructing scaling relations for galaxies in the massive cluster MACSJ0717.5 at z=0.545z=0.545 and comparing with those of Coma, we model the luminosity evolution of the stellar populations and the structural evolution of the galaxies. We calculate magnitudes, surface brightnesses and effective radii using HST/ACS images and velocity dispersions using Gemini/GMOS spectra, and present a catalogue of our measurements for 17 galaxies. We also generate photometric catalogues for 3000\sim 3000 galaxies from the HST imaging. With these, we construct the colour-magnitude relation, the fundamental plane, the mass-to-light versus mass relation, the mass-size relation and the mass-velocity dispersion relation for both clusters. We present a new, coherent way of modelling these scaling relations simultaneously using a simple physical model in order to infer the evolution in luminosity, size and velocity dispersion as a function of redshift, and show that the data can be fully accounted for with this model. We find that (a) the evolution in size and velocity dispersion undergone by these galaxies between z0.5z \sim 0.5 and z0z \sim 0 is mild, with Re(z)(1+z)0.40±0.32R_e(z) \sim (1+z)^{-0.40\pm0.32} and σ(z)(1+z)0.09±0.27\sigma(z) \sim (1+z)^{0.09 \pm 0.27}, and (b) the stellar populations are old, 10\sim 10 Gyr, with a 3\sim 3 Gyr dispersion in age, and are consistent with evolving purely passively since z0.5z \sim 0.5 with ΔlogM/LB=0.550.07+0.15z\Delta \log M/L_B = -0.55_{-0.07}^{+0.15} z. The implication is that these galaxies formed their stars early and subsequently grew dissipationlessly so as to have their mass already in place by z0.5z \sim 0.5, and suggests a dominant role for dry mergers, which may have accelerated the growth in these high-density cluster environments.Comment: 20 pages; accepted for publication in MNRA

    Prospects for improved Λc\Lambda_c branching fractions

    The experimental uncertainty on the branching fraction \b(\Lambda_c \to p K^- \pi^+) = (5.0 \pm 1.3)% has not decreased since 1998, despite a much larger data sample. Uncertainty in this quantity dominates that in many other quantities, including branching fractions of Λc\Lambda_c to other modes, branching fractions of bb-flavored baryons, and fragmentation fractions of charmed and bottom quarks. Here we advocate a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors in ΛcΛ+ν\Lambda_c \to \Lambda \ell^+ \nu_\ell (the case =e+\ell = e^+ is simpler as the mass of the lepton can be neglected). Such a calculation would yield an absolute prediction for the rate for ΛcΛ+ν\Lambda_c \to \Lambda \ell^+ \nu_\ell. When combined with the Λc\Lambda_c lifetime, it could provide a calibration for an improved set of Λc\Lambda_c branching fractions as long as the accuracy exceeds about 25%.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, version to be published in Phys.\ Rev.\

    Associative memory in gene regulation networks

    The pattern of gene expression in the phenotype of an organism is determined in part by the dynamical attractors of the organism’s gene regulation network. Changes to the connections in this network over evolutionary time alter the adult gene expression pattern and hence the fitness of the organism. However, the evolution of structure in gene expression networks (potentially reflecting past selective environments) and its affordances and limitations with respect to enhancing evolvability is poorly understood in general. In this paper we model the evolution of a gene regulation network in a controlled scenario. We show that selected changes to connections in the regulation network make the currently selected gene expression pattern more robust to environmental variation. Moreover, such changes to connections are necessarily ‘Hebbian’ – ‘genes that fire together wire together’ – i.e. genes whose expression is selected for in the same selective environments become co-regulated. Accordingly, in a manner formally equivalent to well-understood learning behaviour in artificial neural networks, a gene expression network will therefore develop a generalised associative memory of past selected phenotypes. This theoretical framework helps us to better understand the relationship between homeostasis and evolvability (i.e. selection to reduce variability facilitates structured variability), and shows that, in principle, a gene regulation network has the potential to develop ‘recall’ capabilities normally reserved for cognitive systems

    Optimisation of growth conditions for ovine airway epithelial cell differentiation at an air-liquid interface

    Respiratory tract infections are of significant concern in the agriculture industry. There is a requirement for the development of well-characterised in vitro epithelial cell culture models in order to dissect the diverse molecular interactions occurring at the host-pathogen interface in airway epithelia. We have analysed key factors that influence growth and differentiation of ovine tracheal epithelial cells in an air-liquid interface (ALI) culture system. Cellular differentiation was assessed at 21 days post-ALI, a time-point which we have previously shown to be sufficient for differentiation in standard growth conditions. We identified a dose-dependent response to epidermal growth factor (EGF) in terms of both epithelial thickening and ciliation levels. Maximal ciliation levels were observed with 25 ng ml-1 EGF. We identified a strict requirement for retinoic acid (RA) in epithelial differentiation as RA exclusion resulted in the formation of a stratified squamous epithelium, devoid of cilia. The pore-density of the growth substrate also had an influence on differentiation as high pore-density inserts yielded higher levels of ciliation and more uniform cell layers than low pore-density inserts. Differentiation was also improved by culturing the cells in an atmosphere of sub-ambient oxygen concentration. We compared two submerged growth media and observed differences in the rate of proliferation/expansion, barrier formation and also in terminal differentiation. Taken together, these results indicate important differences between the response of ovine tracheal epithelial cells and other previously described airway epithelial models, to a variety of environmental conditions. These data also indicate that the phenotype of ovine tracheal epithelial cells can be tailored in vitro by precise modulation of growth conditions, thereby yielding a customisable, potential infection model
