Spectral analysis of the biharmonic operator subject to Neumann boundary conditions on dumbbell domains
We consider the biharmonic operator subject to homogeneous boundary
conditions of Neumann type on a planar dumbbell domain which consists of two
disjoint domains connected by a thin channel. We analyse the spectral behaviour
of the operator, characterizing the limit of the eigenvalues and of the
eigenprojections as the thickness of the channel goes to zero. In applications
to linear elasticity, the fourth order operator under consideration is related
to the deformation of a free elastic plate, a part of which shrinks to a
segment. In contrast to what happens with the classical second order case, it
turns out that the limiting equation is here distorted by a strange factor
depending on a parameter which plays the role of the Poisson coefficient of the

Layered Structures of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy and Metal Matrix Composites on Its Base Joint by Diffusion Bonding and Friction Welding
Metallic layered structures demonstrate an advanced set of characteristics that combine different properties not found within homogenous bulk materials. Powder metallurgy (PM) is proven to be the most efficient way of fabrication of layered structures, including highly rated structures of Ti alloys. Residual porosity, however, remains one of the biggest problems of titanium-based PM products and this can adversely affect the mechanical properties and performance of the structural parts. Post-sintering hot deformation is a common way to control the porosity of metallic materials. Traditional thermomechanical processing like hot rolling, however, could not be applied on multi-layered structures due to the disparity of the different layers’ plastic flow. Separate processing of high performance individual layers to reach their best parameters, followed by post processing bonding of the mating subcomponents is a credible pathway for fabrication of the layered materials with highly optimized properties of each individual layer. In this study we used diffusion bonding (DB) and friction welding to join the parts made of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and metal matrix composites on the base of this alloy reinforced with 10% of either TiB or TiC. Parts were fabricated using blended elemental PM. Different protocols were used to join the materials: DB welding via rotational friction (RFW) and linear friction (LFW) as well as different geometries of mating subcomponents were tested. Structure characterization of the joints using light optical microscopy, SEM, EDS, EBSD as well as mechanical tests were performed. All used protocols were generally successful in bonding the parts made of Ti-64 alloy and composites on its base. The potential of DB, RFW and LFW of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and its MMC are discussed
Two-neutron knockout from neutron-deficient Ar, S, and Si
Two-neutron knockout reactions from nuclei in the proximity of the proton
dripline have been studied using intermediate-energy beams of neutron-deficient
Ar, S, and Si. The inclusive cross sections, and also the
partial cross sections for the population of individual bound final states of
the Ar, S and Si knockout residues, have been determined
using the combination of particle and -ray spectroscopy. Similar to the
two-proton knockout mechanism on the neutron-rich side of the nuclear chart,
these two-neutron removal reactions from already neutron-deficient nuclei are

Factors affecting the use of patient survey data for quality improvement in the Veterans Health Administration
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Little is known about how to use patient feedback to improve experiences of health care. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) conducts regular patient surveys that have indicated improved care experiences over the past decade. The goal of this study was to assess factors that were barriers to, or promoters of, efforts to improve care experiences in VA facilities.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted case studies at two VA facilities, one with stable high scores on inpatient reports of emotional support between 2002 and 2006, and one with stable low scores over the same period. A semi-structured interview was used to gather information from staff who worked with patient survey data at the study facilities. Data were analyzed using a previously developed qualitative framework describing organizational, professional and data-related barriers and promoters to data use.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Respondents reported more promoters than barriers to using survey data, and particularly support for improvement efforts. Themes included developing patient-centered cultures, quality improvement structures such as regular data review, and training staff in patient-centered behaviors. The influence of incentives, the role of nursing leadership, and triangulating survey data with other data on patients' views also emerged as important. It was easier to collect data on current organization and practice than those in the past and this made it difficult to deduce which factors might influence differing facility performance.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Interviews with VA staff provided promising examples of how systematic processes for using survey data can be implemented as part of wider quality improvement efforts. However, prospective studies are needed to identify the most effective strategies for using patient feedback to improve specific aspects of patient-centered care.</p
Poly(amino acid)-polyester graft copolymer nanoparticles for the acid-mediated release of doxorubicin
Biodegradable polymers have emerged as highly effective drug delivery vehicles. We combine N-carboxyanhydride and O-carboxyanhydride ring opening polymerisations to synthesise a poly(amino acid)-polyester graft copolymer capable of encapsulating, and subsequently releasing
doxorubicin via acid-mediated hydrolysis. Consequently, the nanoparticles detailed are extremely promising vehicles for the controlled delivery of chemotherapeutic agents
Preliminary Limits on the WIMP-Nucleon Cross Section from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS)
We are conducting an experiment to search for WIMPs, or weakly-interacting
massive particles, in the galactic halo using terrestrial detectors. This
generic class of hypothetical particles, whose properties are similar to those
predicted by extensions of the standard model of particle physics, could
comprise the cold component of non-baryonic dark matter. We describe our
experiment, which is based on cooled germanium and silicon detectors in a
shielded low-background cryostat. The detectors achieve a high degree of
background rejection through the simultaneous measurement of the energy in
phonons and ionization. Using exposures on the order of one kilogram-day from
initial runs of our experiment, we have achieved (preliminary) upper limits on
the WIMP-nucleon cross section that are comparable to much longer runs of other

A genome guided evaluation of the Lab4 probiotic consortium
In this study, we present the draft genome sequences of the Lab4 probiotic consortium using whole genome sequencing. Draft genome sequences were retrieved and deposited for each of the organisms; PRJNA559984 for B. bifidum CUL20, PRJNA482335 for Lactobacillus acidophilus CUL60, PRJNA482434 for Lactobacillus acid. Probiogenomic in silico analyses confirmed existing taxonomies and identified the presence putative gene sequences that were functionally related to the performance of each organism during in vitro assessments of bile and acid tolerability, adherence to enterocytes and susceptibility to antibiotics. Predictions of genomic stability identified no significant risk of horizontal gene transfer in any of the Lab4 strains and the absence of both antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. These observations were supported by the outcomes of acute phase and repeat dose tolerability studies in Wistar rats where challenge with high doses of Lab4 did not result in any mortalities, clinical/histopathological abnormalities nor indications of systemic toxicity. Detection of increased numbers of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the faeces of supplemented rats implied an ability to survive transit through the gastrointestinal tract and/or impact upon the intestinal microbiota composition. In summary, this study provides in silico, in vitro and in vivo support for probiotic functionality and the safety of the Lab4 consortium
