The Effect of Supplementation on Selenium and Zinc Content in Blood and Milk of Dairy Cows
Milk is an important source of microelements for calves during the suckling period as well as in human nutrition. Concentration of trace elements in blood and their secretion via milk can significantly change depending on food intake and composition. Proper control of selenium and zinc content in blood and in milk can improve the status of these microelements, so that the occurrence of deficiency or excessive quantity due to their increased intake can be prevented. This paper presents the results of the study on the concentration of selenium and zinc in the blood and milk of diary cows whose rations have been supplemented by organic forms of selenium (0.2 mg/kg DM) and zinc (40 mg/kg DM) during the last ten days of dry period and early lactation. Supplemented cows in trial groups A and B achieved significatly higher concentrations of these microelements in blood (Se 186.70±8.50 ”g/L vs. 118.80±7.05 ”g/L), blood serum (Zn 1204.70±109.5 ”g/L vs. 1095.40±130.2 ”g/L) and milk (Se 57.30±8.05 vs. 21.30±4.60 ”g/L; Zn 2893.90±120.15 ”g/L vs. 1952.10±130.50 ”g/L) on 60th day postpartum compared to non-supplemented control
Critical temperature oscillations in magnetically coupled superconducting mesoscopic loops
We study the magnetic interaction between two superconducting concentric
mesoscopic Al loops, close to the superconducting/normal phase transition. The
phase boundary is measured resistively for the two-loop structure as well as
for a reference single loop. In both systems Little-Parks oscillations,
periodic in field are observed in the critical temperature Tc versus applied
magnetic field H. In the Fourier spectrum of the Tc(H) oscillations, a weak
'low frequency' response shows up, which can be attributed to the inner loop
supercurrent magnetic coupling to the flux of the outer loop. The amplitude of

QuizMap: Open social student modeling and adaptive navigation support with TreeMaps
In this paper, we present a novel approach to integrate social adaptive navigation support for self-assessment questions with an open student model using QuizMap, a TreeMap-based interface. By exposing student model in contrast to student peers and the whole class, QuizMap attempts to provide social guidance and increase student performance. The paper explains the nature of the QuizMap approach and its implementation in the context of self-assessment questions for Java programming. It also presents the design of a semester-long classroom study that we ran to evaluate QuizMap and reports the evaluation results. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Orbital and spin contributions to the -tensors in metal nanoparticles
We present a theoretical study of the mesoscopic fluctuations of -tensors
in a metal nanoparticle. The calculations were performed using a semi-realistic
tight-binding model, which contains both spin and orbital contributions to the
-tensors. The results depend on the product of the spin-orbit scattering
time and the mean-level spacing , but are
otherwise weakly affected by the specific shape of a {\it generic}
nanoparticle. We find that the spin contribution to the -tensors agrees with
Random Matrix Theory (RMT) predictions. On the other hand, in the strong
spin-orbit coupling limit , the
orbital contribution depends crucially on the space character of the
quasi-particle wavefunctions: it levels off at a small value for states of
character but is strongly enhanced for states of character. Our numerical
results demonstrate that when orbital coupling to the field is included, RMT
predictions overestimate the typical -factor of orbitals that have dominant
-character. This finding points to a possible source of the puzzling

Characterization of X-Ray Diamond Detector by Monte Carlo Method
The use of diamond as material for X-ray detector is subject of investigation and practice in radiotherapy, space and material science and technology. This paper presents the results of application of Monte Carlo method for simulation of photon transport through diamond detector. The aim is restitution and demonstrating of numerical technique for characterization of electrical properties for different detector conditions and configurations. Monte Carlo code was adopted to determine the energy deposited and dose distribution in the structure of diamond detector. Delayed Care and Mortality Among Women and Men with Myocardial Infarction
Background-Women with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have higher mortality rates than men. We investigated whether sex-related differences in timely access to care among STEMI patients may be a factor associated with excess risk of early mortality in women. Methods and Results-We identified 6022 STEMI patients who had information on time of symptom onset to time of hospital presentation at 41 hospitals participating in the ISACS-TC (International Survey of Acute Coronary Syndromes in Transitional Countries) registry (NCT01218776) from October 2010 through April 2016. Patients were stratified into time-delay cohorts. We estimated the 30-day risk of all-cause mortality in each cohort. Despite similar delays in seeking care, the overall time from symptom onset to hospital presentation was longer for women than men (median: 270 minutes [range: 130-776] versus 240 minutes [range: 120-600]). After adjustment for baseline variables, female sex was independently associated with greater risk of 30-day mortality (odds ratio: 1.58; 95% confidence interval, 1.27-1.97). Sex differences in mortality following STEMI were no longer observed for patients having delays from symptom onset to hospital presentation of (odds ratio: 0.77; 95% confidence interval, 0.29-2.02). Conclusions-Sex difference in mortality following STEMI persists and appears to be driven by prehospital delays in hospital presentation. Women appear to be more vulnerable to prolonged untreated ischemia
Husimi Transform of an Operator Product
It is shown that the series derived by Mizrahi, giving the Husimi transform
(or covariant symbol) of an operator product, is absolutely convergent for a
large class of operators. In particular, the generalized Liouville equation,
describing the time evolution of the Husimi function, is absolutely convergent
for a large class of Hamiltonians. By contrast, the series derived by
Groenewold, giving the Weyl transform of an operator product, is often only
asymptotic, or even undefined. The result is used to derive an alternative way
of expressing expectation values in terms of the Husimi function. The advantage
of this formula is that it applies in many of the cases where the anti-Husimi
transform (or contravariant symbol) is so highly singular that it fails to

Radiation Absorption Characteristics of Titanium Alloys
Titanium alloys have found numerous applications in space research, and nuclear industry and research. Since X-rays constitute an important part of the space radiation environment, numerical simulations of radiation absorption characteristics of titanium alloys were studied in this paper. The photon transport Monte Carlo software was used for determining the energy deposited in titanium samples. The numerical results show the pronounced dependence of radiation absorption properties of different combinations of components in alloy. âEthnic groupâ, the state and the politics of representation
The assertion, even if only by implication, that âethnic groupâ categories represent ârealâ tangible entities, indeed identities, is commonplace not only in the realms of political and policy discourse but also amongst contemporary social scientists. This paper, following Brubaker (2002), questions this position in a number of key respects: of these three issues will dominate the discussion that follows.
First, there is an interrogation of the proposition that those to whom the categories/labels refer constitute sociologically meaningful âgroupsâ as distinct from (mere) human collectivities. Secondly, there is the question of how these categories emerge, i.e. exactly what series of events, negotiations and contestations lie behind their construction and social acceptance. Thirdly, and as a corollary to the latter point, we explore the process of reification that leads to these categories being seen to represent âreal things in the worldâ (ibid.)
Acute retroperitoneal bleeding due to inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm: Case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Visceral artery aneurysms (VAA), although uncommon, are increasingly being detected. We describe a case of spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage from a ruptured IMA aneurysm associated with stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and celiac trunk, successfully treated with surgery.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 65-year-old man presented with abdominal pain and hypovolemic shock. Abdominal CT scan showed an aneurysm of the inferior mesenteric artery with retroperitoneal hematoma. In addition, an obstructive disease of the superior mesenteric artery and celiac axis was observed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Upon emergency laparotomy a ruptured inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm was detected. The aneurysm was excised and the artery reconstructed by end-to-end anastomosis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This report discusses the etiology, presentation, diagnosis and case management of inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms.</p
