Integrated system to perform surrogate based aerodynamic optimisation for high-lift airfoil
This work deals with the aerodynamics optimisation of a generic two-dimensional three element high-lift configuration. Although the high-lift system is applied only during take-off and landing in the low speed phase of the flight the cost efficiency of the airplane is strongly influenced by it [1]. The ultimate goal of an aircraft high lift system design team is to define the simplest configuration which, for prescribed constraints, will meet the take-off, climb, and landing requirements usually expressed in terms of maximum L/D and/or maximum CL. The ability of the calculation method to accurately predict changes in objective function value when gaps, overlaps and element deflections are varied is therefore critical. Despite advances in computer capacity, the enormous computational cost of running complex engineering simulations makes it impractical to rely exclusively on simulation for the purpose of design optimisation. To cut down the cost, surrogate models, also known as metamodels, are constructed from and then used in place of the actual simulation models. This work outlines the development of integrated systems to perform aerodynamics multi-objective optimisation for a three-element airfoil test case in high lift configuration, making use of surrogate models available in MACROS Generic Tools, which has been integrated in our design tool. Different metamodeling techniques have been compared based on multiple performance criteria. With MACROS is possible performing either optimisation of the model built with predefined training sample (GSO) or Iterative Surrogate-Based Optimization (SBO). In this first case the model is build independent from the optimisation and then use it as a black box in the optimisation process. In the second case is needed to provide the possibility to call CFD code from the optimisation process, and there is no need to build any model, it is being built internally during the optimisation process. Proper motions in Terzan 5: membership of the multi-iron sub-populations and first constrain to the orbit
By exploiting two sets of high-resolution images obtained with HST ACS/WFC
over a baseline of ~10 years we have measured relative proper motions of
~70,000 stars in the stellar system Terzan 5. The results confirm the
membership of the three sub-populations with different iron abudances
discovered in the system. The orbit of the system has been derived from a first
estimate of its absolute proper motion, obtained by using bulge stars as
reference. The results of the integration of this orbit within an axisymmetric
Galactic model exclude any external accretion origin for this cluster. Terzan 5
is known to have chemistry similar to the Galactic bulge; our findings support
a kinematic link between the cluster and the bulge, further strengthening the
possibility that Terzan 5 is the fossil remnant of one of the pristine clumps

Multiphysics simulation of corona discharge induced ionic wind
Ionic wind devices or electrostatic fluid accelerators are becoming of
increasing interest as tools for thermal management, in particular for
semiconductor devices. In this work, we present a numerical model for
predicting the performance of such devices, whose main benefit is the ability
to accurately predict the amount of charge injected at the corona electrode.
Our multiphysics numerical model consists of a highly nonlinear strongly
coupled set of PDEs including the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow,
Poisson's equation for electrostatic potential, charge continuity and heat
transfer equations. To solve this system we employ a staggered solution
algorithm that generalizes Gummel's algorithm for charge transport in
semiconductors. Predictions of our simulations are validated by comparison with
experimental measurements and are shown to closely match. Finally, our
simulation tool is used to estimate the effectiveness of the design of an
electrohydrodynamic cooling apparatus for power electronics applications.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure
Diet of a restocked population of the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis in NW Italy
Recently several projects have been implemented for the conservation of the European turtle Emys orbicularis, but few aspects of the captive-bred animals released into the wild have been described. In this note we report about the trophic habits of a small restocked population of the endemic subspecies E. o. ingauna that is now reproducing in NW Italy. Faecal contents from 25 individuals (10 females, 11 males and 4 juveniles) were obtained in June 2016. Overall, 11 taxonomic categories of invertebrates were identified, together with seeds and plant remains. Plant material was present in 24 out of 25 turtle faecal contents, suggesting that ingestion was deliberate. There were no differences between the dietary habits of females and males, and the trophic strategy of adult individuals was characterised by a relatively high specialization on dragonfly nymphae. These findings suggest that captive bred turtles are adapting well to the wild and that restocked individuals assumed an omnivorous diet, a trophic behaviour typical of other wild turtle populations living in similar habitats
Tadalafil modulates aromatase activity and androgen receptor expression in a human osteoblastic cell in vitro model
Purpose Phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitor (PDE5i)
tadalafil administration in men with erectile dysfunction is
associated with increased testosterone/estradiol ratio, leading
to hypothesize a potential increased effect of androgen
action on target tissues. We aimed to characterize, in a cellular
model system in vitro, the potential modulation of
aromatase and sex steroid hormone receptors upon exposure
to tadalafil (TAD).
Methods Human osteoblast-like cells SAOS-2 were chosen
as an in vitro model system since osteoblasts are target
of steroid hormones. Cells were tested for viability upon
TAD exposure, which increased cell proliferation. Then,
cells were treated with/without TAD for several times to
evaluate potential modulation in PDE5, aromatase (ARO),
androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptor expression.
Results Osteoblasts express significant levels of both PDE5
mRNA and protein. Exposure of cells to increasing concentrations
of TAD (10â8â10â7 M) decreased PDE5 mRNA and
protein expression. Also, TAD inhibited ARO mRNA and
protein expression leading to an increase in testosterone levels
in the supernatants. Interestingly, TAD increased total AR mRNA and protein expression and decreased ERα, with an
increased ratio of AR/ER, suggesting preferential androgenic
vs estrogenic pathway activation.
Conclusions Our results demonstrate for the first time
that TAD decreases ARO expression and increases AR
protein expression in human SAOS-2, strongly suggesting
a new control of steroid hormones pathway by PDE5i.
These findings might represent the first evidence of translational
actions of PDE5i on AR, which leads to hypothesize
a growing relevance of this molecule in men with
prostate cancer long-term treated with TAD for sexual
rehabilitation.

Chemical and kinematical properties of Galactic bulge stars surrounding the stellar system Terzan 5
As part of a study aimed at determining the kinematical and chemical
properties of Terzan 5, we present the first characterization of the bulge
stars surrounding this puzzling stellar system. We observed 615 targets located
well beyond the tidal radius of Terzan 5 and we found that their radial
velocity distribution is well described by a Gaussian function peaked at
=+21.0\pm4.6 km/s and with dispersion sigma_v=113.0\pm2.7 km/s. This is
the one of the few high-precision spectroscopic survey of radial velocities for
a large sample of bulge stars in such a low and positive latitude environment
(b=+1.7{\deg}). We found no evidence for the peak at \sim+200 km/s found
in Nidever et al. 2012. The strong contamination of many observed spectra by
TiO bands prevented us from deriving the iron abundance for the entire
spectroscopic sample, introducing a selection bias. The metallicity
distribution was finally derived for a sub-sample of 112 stars in a magnitude
range where the effect of the selection bias is negligible. The distribution is
quite broad and roughly peaked at solar metallicity ([Fe/H]\simeq+0.05 dex)
with a similar number of stars in the super-solar and in the sub-solar ranges.
The population number ratios in different metallicity ranges agree well with
those observed in other low-latitude bulge fields suggesting (i) the possible
presence of a plateau for |b|<4{\deg} for the ratio between stars in the
super-solar (0<[Fe/H]<0.5 dex) and sub-solar (-0.5<[Fe/H]<0 dex) metallicity
ranges; (ii) a severe drop of the metal-poor component ([Fe/H]<-0.5) as a

The quantum theory of measurement within dynamical reduction models
We analyze in mathematical detail, within the framework of the QMUPL model of
spontaneous wave function collapse, the von Neumann measurement scheme for the
measurement of a 1/2 spin particle. We prove that, according to the equation of
the model: i) throughout the whole measurement process, the pointer of the
measuring device is always perfectly well localized in space; ii) the
probabilities for the possible outcomes are distributed in agreement with the
Born probability rule; iii) at the end of the measurement the state of the
microscopic system has collapsed to the eigenstate corresponding to the
measured eigenvalue. This analysis shows rigorously how dynamical reduction
models provide a consistent solution to the measurement problem of quantum

Ceci n'est pas a globular cluster: the metallicity distribution of the stellar system Terzan 5
We present new determinations of the iron abundance for 220 stars belonging
to the stellar system Terzan 5 in the Galactic bulge. The spectra have been
acquired with FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern
Observatory and DEIMOS at the Keck II Telescope. This is by far the largest
spectroscopic sample of stars ever observed in this stellar system. From this
dataset, a subsample of targets with spectra unaffected by TiO bands was
extracted and statistically decontaminated from field stars. Once combined with
34 additional stars previously published by our group, a total sample of 135
member stars covering the entire radial extent of the system has been used to
determine the metallicity distribution function of Terzan 5. The iron
distribution clearly shows three peaks: a super-solar component at
[Fe/H] dex, accounting for 29% of the sample, a dominant sub-solar
population at [Fe/H] dex, corresponding to 62% of the total, and a
minor (6%) metal-poor component at [Fe/H] dex. Such a broad,
multi-modal metallicity distribution demonstrates that Terzan 5 is not a
genuine globular cluster but the remnant of a much more complex stellar system.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication by Ap
Quantum Quenches in Integrable Field Theories
We study the non equilibrium time evolution of an integrable field theory in
1+1 dimensions after a sudden variation of a global parameter of the
Hamiltonian. For a class of quenches defined in the text, we compute the long
times limit of the one point function of a local operator as a series of form
factors. Even if some subtleties force us to handle this result with care,
there is a strong evidence that for long times the expectation value of any
local operator can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble with a
different effective temperature for each eigenmode
