    Stability of the Period-Doubled Core of the 90-degree Partial in Silicon

    In a recent Letter [N. Lehto and S. Oberg, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5568 (1998)], Lehto and Oberg investigated the effects of strain fields on the core structure of the 90-degree partial dislocation in silicon, especially the influence of the choice of supercell periodic boundary conditions in theoretical simulations. We show that their results for the relative stability between the two structures are in disagreement with cell-size converged tight-binding total energy (TBTE) calculations, which suggest the DP core to be more stable, regardless of the choice of boundary condition. Moreover, we argue that this disagreement is due to their use of a Keating potential.Comment: 1 page. Submitted to Comments section of PRL.     Chameleons with Field Dependent Couplings

    Certain scalar-tensor theories exhibit the so-called chameleon mechanism, whereby observational signatures of scalar fields are hidden by a combination of self-interactions and interactions with ambient matter. Not all scalar-tensor theories exhibit such a chameleon mechanism, which has been originally found in models with inverse power run-away potentials and field independent couplings to matter. In this paper we investigate field-theories with field-dependent couplings and a power-law potential for the scalar field. We show that the theory indeed is a chameleon field theory. We find the thin-shell solution for a spherical body and investigate the consequences for E\"ot-Wash experiments, fifth-force searches and Casimir force experiments. Requiring that the scalar-field evades gravitational tests, we find that the coupling is sensitive to a mass-scale which is of order of the Hubble scale today.Comment: 17 pages, 20 figure

    Using a new developed die and different types of thermosetting resins to produce U200 profiles by pultrusion

    In this work, a new steel heated pultrusion die was designed, developed and manufactured to produce U200 glass fibre reinforced thermosetting matrix (GRP) profiles. The finite element analysis (FEA) was used to predict and optimise the developed die heating by using cylindrical electrical powered cartridges. To assess the new die performance it was mounted in the 120 kN pultrusion line of the Portuguese company Vidropol SA and used to produce continuously U200 profiles able to meet all requirements specified for the E23 grade accordingly to the European Standard EN 13706: 2002. After setting up the type, orientation and sequence of layers in the U 200 laminate, different types of thermosetting resins were used in its production. Orthophthalic, isophthalic and bisphenolic unsaturated polyester as well as vinylester resins were used to produce glass fibre reinforced U 200 composite profiles. All applied resins were submitted to SPI gel tests in order to select the more appropriated catalyst system and optimise the processing variables to be used in each case, namely, pultrusion pull-speed and die temperature. The best pultrusion operational conditions were selected by varying and monitoring the pull-speed and die temperature and, at the same time, measuring the temperature on the manufactured U 200 profile during processing. Finally, the produced U200 profiles were submitted to visual inspection, calcination and mechanical tests, namely, flexural, tensional and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests, to assess their accomplishment with the EN 13706 requirements.FCT, projeto UID/CTM/50025/201

    Generalization of the density-matrix method to a non-orthogonal basis

    We present a generalization of the Li, Nunes and Vanderbilt density-matrix method to the case of a non-orthogonal set of basis functions. A representation of the real-space density matrix is chosen in such a way that only the overlap matrix, and not its inverse, appears in the energy functional. The generalized energy functional is shown to be variational with respect to the elements of the density matrix, which typically remains well localized.Comment: 11 pages + 2 postcript figures at the end (search for -cut here

    Inflationary Cosmology and Oscillating Universes in Loop Quantum Cosmology

    We study oscillatory universes within the context of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We make a comparative study of flat and positively curved universes sourced by scalar fields with either positive or negative potentials. We investigate how oscillating universes can set the initial conditions for successful slow-roll inflation, while ensuring that the semi-classical bounds are satisfied. We observe rich oscillatory dynamics with negative potentials, although it is difficult to respect the semi-classical bounds in models of this type.Comment: 7 pages, In Press Int. Mod. Phys.

    Modeling chronic pain experiences from online reports using the Reddit Reports of Chronic Pain dataset

    Objective: Reveal and quantify qualities of reported experiences of chronic pain on social media, from multiple pathological backgrounds, by means of the novel Reddit Reports of Chronic Pain (RRCP) dataset, using Natural Language Processing techniques. Materials and Methods: Define and validate the RRCP dataset for a set of subreddits related to chronic pain. Identify the main concerns discussed in each subreddit. Model each subreddit according to their main concerns. Compare subreddit models. Results: The RRCP dataset comprises 86,537 Reddit submissions from 12 subreddits related to chronic pain (each related to one pathological background). Each RRCP subreddit has various main concerns. Some of these concerns are shared between multiple subreddits (e.g., the subreddit Sciatica semantically entails the subreddit backpain in their various concerns, but not the other way around), whilst some concerns are exclusive to specific subreddits (e.g., Interstitialcystitis and CrohnsDisease). Discussion: These results suggest that the reported experience of chronic pain, from multiple pathologies (i.e., subreddits), has concerns relevant to all, and concerns exclusive to certain pathologies. Our analysis details each of these concerns and their similarity relations. Conclusion: Although limited by intrinsic qualities of the Reddit platform, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first research work attempting to model the linguistic expression of various chronic pain-inducing pathologies and comparing these models to identify and quantify the similarities and differences between the corresponding emergent chronic pain experiences.Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures, 8 table

    Assessment of paracetamol toxic effects under varying seawater pH conditions on the marine polychaete hediste diversicolor using biochemical endpoints

    Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are likely to lower ocean pH values, after its dissolution in seawater. Additionally, pharmaceuticals drugs are environmental stressors due to their intrinsic properties and worldwide occurrence. It is thus of the utmost importance to assess the combined effects of pH decreases and pharmaceutical contamination, considering that their absorption (and effects) are likely to be strongly affected by changes in oceanic pH. To attain this goal, individuals of the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor were exposed to distinct pH levels (8.2, 7.9, and 7.6) and environmentally relevant concentrations of the acidic drug paracetamol (PAR: 0, 30, 60, and 120 µg/L). Biomarkers such as catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and cyclooxygenase (COX) activities, as well as peroxidative damage (through thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) quantification), were quantified to serve as ecotoxicological endpoints. Data showed a general increase in CAT and a decrease in GST activities (with significant fluctuations according to the tested conditions of PAR and pH). These changes are likely to be associated with alterations of the redox cycle driven by PAR exposure. In addition, pH levels seemed to condition the toxicity caused by PAR, suggesting that the toxic effects of this drug were in some cases enhanced by more acidic conditions. An inhibition of AChE was observed in animals exposed to the highest concentration of PAR, regardless of the pH value. Moreover, no lipid peroxidation was observed in most individuals, although a significant increase in TBARS levels was observed for polychaetes exposed to the lowest pH. Finally, no alterations of COX activities were recorded on polychaetes exposed to PAR, regardless of the pH level. The obtained results suggest that seawater acidification is detrimental to marine wildlife, since it may enhance toxic effects caused by environmental realistic concentrations of acidic drugs, such as PAR. This work was crucial to evidence that ocean acidification, in the context of a global change scenario of increased levels of both atmospheric and oceanic CO2, is a key factor in understanding the putative enhanced toxicity of most pharmaceutical drugs that are of an acidic nature.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Spectroscopic and structural studies of di-ureasils doped with lithium perchlorate

    Di-urea cross-linked POE/siloxane hybrid ormolytes (di-ureasils) doped with a wide concentration range of lithium perchlorate trihydrate (LiClO4·3H2O) (200 ≥ n ≥ 0.5, where n expresses the salt content in terms of the number of ether oxygen atoms per Li+ ion) have been analysed by Fourier transform infrared and Raman (FT-IR and FT-Raman, respectively) spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results obtained lead us to conclude that the xerogels with n ≥ 5 are totally amorphous. At n ≤ 1 free salt is observed. “Free” ClO4− ions appear to be the main charge carriers at the conductivity maximum located within the 25 ≤ n ≤ 8 composition range of this family of ormolytes. At n = 15 ClO4− ions coordinated in mono/tridentate (C3v symmetry) and bidentate (C2v symmetry) configurations were detected. In salt-rich samples with n < 15 there is a marked tendency for ionic association. The resulting decrease that occurs in the concentration of “free” ions is consistent with the observed significant decrease of the ionic conductivity. The analysis of the “amide I” and “amide II” regions provided solid proof that the Li+ ions bond to the urea carbonyl oxygen atoms over the entire range of salt concentration studied.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT
