POMDP-lite for Robust Robot Planning under Uncertainty
The partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) provides a
principled general model for planning under uncertainty. However, solving a
general POMDP is computationally intractable in the worst case. This paper
introduces POMDP-lite, a subclass of POMDPs in which the hidden state variables
are constant or only change deterministically. We show that a POMDP-lite is
equivalent to a set of fully observable Markov decision processes indexed by a
hidden parameter and is useful for modeling a variety of interesting robotic
tasks. We develop a simple model-based Bayesian reinforcement learning
algorithm to solve POMDP-lite models. The algorithm performs well on
large-scale POMDP-lite models with up to states and outperforms the
state-of-the-art general-purpose POMDP algorithms. We further show that the
algorithm is near-Bayesian-optimal under suitable conditions.Comment: In Proc. IEEE International Conference on Robotics & Automation

A SOCIOECONOMIC APPROACH TO ASSESSING PRICE COMPETITION BETWEEN PRIVATE LABELS AND NATIONAL BRANDS: THE CASE OF SHREDDED CHEESE
An LA/AIDS model is developed to estimate demand elasticities for packages of 8-oz shredded cheese for higher- and lower-income consumers. Data used in this study are scanner data for six supermarket stores in two distinct socioeconomic areas. Results show that: (1) lower-income shoppers are more price-sensitive than higher-income shoppers for both private labels and national brands; (2) compared with private labels, consumers are very sensitive to national brands price changes even in higher-income areas; (3) cross-price elasticities between private labels and national brands are all positive, i.e., private labels and national brands are substitutes in both lower- and higher-income stores; and (4) the number of promoted items does not have a statistically significant impact on sales; instead, the percentage of price discount affects sales for both private labels and national brands.Demand and Price Analysis,
DETERMINANTS OF PRICE ELASTICITIES FOR STORE BRANDS AND NATIONAL BRANDS OF CHEESE
A two-stage modeling process is developed to estimate factors that determine price sensitivities for store and national brands of cheese. Results show that several factors affect price sensitivities. AIDS and LA/AIDS models are used in the analyses and meta-regression results show no difference in own-price elasticities for these two models.Demand and Price Analysis,
Video Generation From Text
Generating videos from text has proven to be a significant challenge for
existing generative models. We tackle this problem by training a conditional
generative model to extract both static and dynamic information from text. This
is manifested in a hybrid framework, employing a Variational Autoencoder (VAE)
and a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). The static features, called "gist,"
are used to sketch text-conditioned background color and object layout
structure. Dynamic features are considered by transforming input text into an
image filter. To obtain a large amount of data for training the deep-learning
model, we develop a method to automatically create a matched text-video corpus
from publicly available online videos. Experimental results show that the
proposed framework generates plausible and diverse videos, while accurately
reflecting the input text information. It significantly outperforms baseline
models that directly adapt text-to-image generation procedures to produce
videos. Performance is evaluated both visually and by adapting the inception
score used to evaluate image generation in GANs
Learning Diverse Image Colorization
Colorization is an ambiguous problem, with multiple viable colorizations for
a single grey-level image. However, previous methods only produce the single
most probable colorization. Our goal is to model the diversity intrinsic to the
problem of colorization and produce multiple colorizations that display
long-scale spatial co-ordination. We learn a low dimensional embedding of color
fields using a variational autoencoder (VAE). We construct loss terms for the
VAE decoder that avoid blurry outputs and take into account the uneven
distribution of pixel colors. Finally, we build a conditional model for the
multi-modal distribution between grey-level image and the color field
embeddings. Samples from this conditional model result in diverse colorization.
We demonstrate that our method obtains better diverse colorizations than a
standard conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE) model, as well as a
recently proposed conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN).Comment: This revision to appear in CVPR1
"Sudden Drop" in Blood Pressure is Associated With Recanalization After Thrombolysis.
We aim to investigate whether the phenomenon of "sudden drop" in blood pressure (BP) within the first 2 hours is associated with vessel recanalization. We retrospectively examined clinical and imaging data from a consecutive series of patients with stroke with large vessel occlusion treated with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). BP was monitored every 15 minutes during the first 2 hours, then every 30 minutes for 6 hours, and then every hour for 16 hours. We observed the phenomenon of "sudden drop" in systolic BP (≥20 mm Hg) in 82 (50.9%) patients in the first 2 hours and vessel recanalization in 87 (54.0%) patients 24 hours after treatment. This phenomenon was independently associated with recanalization (odds ratio 2.100; 95% confidence interval: 1.085-4.062; P = 0.028) after adjusting for the history of atrial fibrillation, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. The phenomenon of "sudden drop" in systolic BP with 20 mm Hg or greater between 2 continuous measurements within the first 2 hours is associated with recanalization after IVT in patients with large vessel occlusion, especially for middle cerebral artery occlusion
d_{xy}-Density wave in fermion-fermion cold atom mixtures
We study density wave instabilities in a doubly-degenerate Fermi-Fermi
mixture with symmetry on a square lattice. For sufficiently
large on-site inter-species repulsion, when the two species of fermions are
both at half-filling, two conventional (-wave) number density waves are
formed with a -phase difference between them to minimize the inter-species
repulsion. Upon moving one species away from half-filling, an unconventional
density wave with -wave symmetry emerges. When both species are away
from the vicinity of half-filling, superconducting instabilities dominate. We
present results of a functional renormalization-group calculation that maps out
the phase diagram at weak couplings. Also, we provide a simple explanation for
the emergence of the -density wave phase based on a four-patch model.
We find a robust and general mechanism for -density-wave formation that
is related to the shape and size of the Fermi surfaces. The density imbalance
between the two species of fermions in the vicinity of half-filling leads to
phase-space discrepancy for different inter-species Umklapp couplings. Using a
phase space argument for leading corrections in the one-loop renormalization
group approach to fermions, we show that the phase-space discrepancy in our
system causes opposite flows for the two leading intra-species Umklapp
couplings and that this triggers the -density-wave instability.Comment: revised long version; 8 pages, 7 figure
