    Theory of PbTiO3, BaTiO3, and SrTiO3 Surfaces

    First-principles total-energy calculations are carried out for (001) surfaces of the cubic perovskite ATiO3 compounds PbTiO3, BaTiO3, and SrTiO3. Both AO-terminated and TiO2-terminated surfaces are considered, and fully-relaxed atomic configurations are determined. In general, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 are found to have a rather similar behavior, while PbTiO3 is different in many respects because of the partially covalent character of the Pb-O bonds. PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 are ferroelectrics, and the influence of the surface upon the ferroelectric distortions is studied for the case of a tetragonal ferroelectric distortion parallel to the surface. The surface relaxation energies are found to be substantial, i.e., many times larger than the bulk ferroelectric well depth. Nevertheless, the influence of the surface upon the ferroelectric order parameter is modest, and is qualitatively as well as quantitatively different for the two materials. Surface energies and electronic properties are also computed. It is found that for BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 surfaces, both AO-terminated and TiO2-terminated surfaces can be thermodynamically stable, whereas for PbTiO3 only the PbO surface termination is stable.Comment: 13 pages with 3 postscript figures embedded.     Creating an acute energy deficit without stimulating compensatory increases in appetite: is there an optimal exercise protocol?

    Recent years have witnessed significant interest from both the scientific community and the media regarding the influence of exercise on subsequent appetite and energy intake responses. This review demonstrates a consensus among the majority of scientific investigations that an acute bout of land-based endurance exercise does not stimulate any compensatory increases in appetite and energy intake on the day of exercise. Alternatively, preliminary evidence suggests that low volume, supramaximal exercise may stimulate an increase in appetite perceptions during the subsequent hours. In accordance with the apparent insensitivity of energy intake to exercise in the short term, the daily energy balance response to exercise appears to be primarily determined by the energy cost of exercise. This finding supports the conclusions of recent training studies that the energy expenditure of exercise is the strongest predictor of fat loss during an exercise programme

    Intercellular communication in normal and regenerating rat liver: a quantitative analysis

    We have compared intercellular communication in the regenerating and normal livers of weanling rats. The electrophysiological studies were conducted at the edge of the liver, and we have found that here as elsewhere in the liver there is a dramatic decrease in the number and size of gap junctions during regeneration. The area of hepatocyte membrane occupied by gap junctions is reduced 100-fold 29-35 h after hepatectomy. By combining observations made with the scanning electron microscope with our freeze fracture data we have estimated the number of "communicating interfaces" (areas of contact between hepatocytes that include at least one gap junction) formed by hepatocytes in normal and regenerating liver. In normal liver a hepatocyte forms gap junctions with every hepatocyte it contacts (approximately 6). In regenerating liver a hepatocyte forms detectable gap junctions with, on average, only one other hepatocyte. Intercellular spread of fluorescent dye and electric current is reduced in regenerating as compared with normal liver. The incidence of electric coupling is reduced from 100% of hepatocyte pairs tested in control liver to 92% in regenerating liver. Analysis of the spatial dependence of electronic potentials indicates a substantial increase in intercellular resistance in regenerating liver. A quantitative comparison of our morphological and physiological data is complicated by tortuous pattern of current flow and by inhomogeneities in the liver during regeneration. Nevertheless we believe that our results are consistent with the hypothesis that gap junctions are aggregates of channels between cell interiors

    Observations of Small Scale ISM Structure in Dense Atomic Gas

    We present high resolution (R~170,000) Kitt Peak National Observatory Co'ude Feed telescope observations of the interstellar KI 7698 angstrom line towards 5 multiple star systems with saturated NaI components. We compare the KI absorption line profiles in each of the two (or three) lines of sight in these systems, and find significant differences between the sight-lines in 3 out of the 5 cases. We infer that the small scale structure traced by previous NaI observations is also present in at least some of the components with saturated NaI absorption lines, and thus the small scale structures traced by the neutral species are occurring at some level in clouds of all column densities. We discuss the implications of that conclusion and a potential explanation by density inhomogeneities
