Nonlinear stability of the ensemble Kalman filter with adaptive covariance inflation

The Ensemble Kalman filter and Ensemble square root filters are data assimilation methods used to combine high dimensional nonlinear models with observed data. These methods have proved to be indispensable tools in science and engineering as they allow computationally cheap, low dimensional ensemble state approximation for extremely high dimensional turbulent forecast models. From a theoretical perspective, these methods are poorly understood, with the exception of a recently established but still incomplete nonlinear stability theory. Moreover, recent numerical and theoretical studies of catastrophic filter divergence have indicated that stability is a genuine mathematical concern and can not be taken for granted in implementation. In this article we propose a simple modification of ensemble based methods which resolves these stability issues entirely. The method involves a new type of adaptive covariance inflation, which comes with minimal additional cost. We develop a complete nonlinear stability theory for the adaptive method, yielding Lyapunov functions and geometric ergodicity under weak assumptions. We present numerical evidence which suggests the adaptive methods have improved accuracy over standard methods and completely eliminate catastrophic filter divergence. This enhanced stability allows for the use of extremely cheap, unstable forecast integrators, which would otherwise lead to widespread filter malfunction.Comment: 34 pages. 4 figure

Electromagnetic Chirps from Neutron Star-Black Hole Mergers

    Get PDF
We calculate the electromagnetic signal of a gamma-ray flare coming from the surface of a neutron star shortly before merger with a black hole companion. Using a new version of the Monte Carlo radiation transport code Pandurata that incorporates dynamic spacetimes, we integrate photon geodesics from the neutron star surface until they reach a distant observer or are captured by the black hole. The gamma-ray light curve is modulated by a number of relativistic effects, including Doppler beaming and gravitational lensing. Because the photons originate from the inspiraling neutron star, the light curve closely resembles the corresponding gravitational waveform: a chirp signal characterized by a steadily increasing frequency and amplitude. We propose to search for these electromagnetic chirps using matched filtering algorithms similar to those used in LIGO data analysis.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Ap

    Internet Human Rights

    Get PDF
The rate at which Internet connectivity is spreading is matched only by the increasing amount of time people spend online. Today over 5 billion humans access the Internet; the overwhelming majority of them engage in social media, and almost all of them live out key aspects of their daily lives digitally. Human rights are universal in the sense that they apply to everyone, everywhere. And while there are indicators that they apply in cyberspace, how they apply is a different story. Now, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) turns 75, we wonder how many of those rights accompany us into our digital lives. This article develops a matrix mapping how human rights, which were developed for the physical world, might apply in the digital world. Using the 30 articles (rights) enumerated in the UDHR as a foil, the broad outline of a clearer picture emerges. Some governments or courts mandate certain rights to fully manifest in digital space, others are making progress, and still others remain static. Moreover, these rights can be enforced via either state regulation or corporate terms of service. Designed as the first tool of its kind for attorneys, judges, policymakers, and advocates to chart which rights are accompanying us onto and into the Internet, this guide will be a foundational starting point for a much broader discussion to come

Diet-induced obesity impairs mammary development and lactogenesis in murine mammary gland

We have developed a mouse model of diet-induced obesity that shows numerous abnormalities relating to mammary gland function. Animals ate 40% more calories when offered a high-fat diet and gained weight at three times the rate of controls. They exhibited reduced conception rates, increased peripartum pup mortality, and impaired lactogenesis. The impairment of lactogenesis involved lipid accumulation in the secretory epithelial cells indicative of an absence of copius milk secretion. Expression of mRNAs for -casein, whey acid protein, and -lactalbumin were all decreased immediately postpartum but recovered as lactation was established over 2–3 days. Expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC)- mRNA was also decreased at parturition as was the total enzyme activity, although there was a compensatory increase in the proportion in the active state. By day 10 of lactation, the proportion of ACC in the active state was also decreased in obese animals, indicative of suppression of de novo fatty acid synthesis resulting from the supply of preformed fatty acids in the diet. Although obese animals consumed more calories in the nonpregnant and early pregnant states, they showed a marked depression in fat intake around day 9 of pregnancy before food intake recovered in later pregnancy. Food intake increased dramatically in both lean and obese animals during lactation although total calories consumed were identical in both groups. Thus, despite access to high-energy diets, the obese animals mobilized even more adipose tissue during lactation than their lean counterparts. Obese animals also exhibited marked abnormalities in alveolar development of the mammary gland, which may partially explain the delay in differentiation evident during lactogenesis

The search for novel analgesics: re-examining spinal cord circuits with new tools

    Get PDF
In this perspective, we propose the absence of detailed information regarding spinal cord circuits that process sensory information remains a major barrier to advancing analgesia. We highlight recent advances showing that functionally discrete populations of neurons in the spinal cord dorsal horn play distinct roles in processing sensory information. We then discuss new molecular, electrophysiological, and optogenetic techniques that can be employed to understand how dorsal horn circuits process tactile and nociceptive information. We believe this information can drive the development of entirely new classes of pharmacotherapies that target key elements in spinal circuits to selectively modify sensory function and blunt pain

Children’s Learning from Touch Screens: A Dual Representation Perspective

    Get PDF
Parents and educators often expect that children will learn from touch screen devices, such as during joint e-book reading. Therefore an essential question is whether young children understand that the touch screen can be a symbolic medium – that entities represented on the touch screen can refer to entities in the real world. Research on symbolic development suggests that symbolic understanding requires that children develop dual representational abilities, meaning children need to appreciate that a symbol is an object in itself (i.e., picture of a dog) while also being a representation of something else (i.e., the real dog). Drawing on classic research on symbols and new research on children’s learning from touch screens, we offer the perspective that children’s ability to learn from the touch screen as a symbolic medium depends on the effect of interactivity on children’s developing dual representational abilities. Although previous research on dual representation suggests the interactive nature of the touch screen might make it difficult for young children to use as a symbolic medium, the unique interactive affordances may help alleviate this difficulty. More research needs to investigate how the interactivity of the touch screen affects children’s ability to connect the symbols on the screen to the real world. Given the interactive nature of the touch screen, researchers and educators should consider both the affordances of the touch screen as well as young children’s cognitive abilities when assessing whether young children can learn from it as a symbolic medium

MV-22B LOGISTICS FLIGHTS SUSTAINING THE AVIATION COMBAT ELEMENT IN THE INDO-PACIFIC

    Get PDF
This research analyzes the usage of the MV-22B for logistics or passenger/mail/cargo sorties in the Indo-Pacific region. Specifically, it focuses on its application to the transport of high-priority aircraft parts from locations ashore to the aviation combat element embarked on an amphibious assault ship, multipurpose (LHD) or amphibious assault ship, general purpose (LHA). Supporting the aviation combat element as it conducts distributed aviation operations inside and on the periphery of the weapon engagement zone in the Pacific is widely unknown in an expeditionary advanced base framework in the great power competition. Two hypothetical scenarios are presented as frameworks to aid in the understanding of MV-22B utilization for logistics. Real-world high-priority aircraft part demand and sortie data, provided by the operating forces, were collected, analyzed, and inserted into the scenarios. The resulting outputs provide new insight on aircraft employment and risks associated with sorties in the engagement zone. Recommendations are given for improving sustainment capabilities while operating in a Marine expeditionary unit construct.Captain, United States Marine CorpsMajor, United States Marine CorpsApproved for public release.
