Experiences in Multi-domain Management Service Development
The developers of management systems and the management services that operate over them will be faced with increasing complexity as services are developed for the open service market. This paper presents experiences in the development of management services that span several administrative domains and which are therefore representative of the complexities of the open service market. The work described involved the development of TMN based management systems that provided management services in support of multimedia teleservices operating over broadband networks
Resistive Magnetohydrodynamic Equilibria in a Torus
It was recently demonstrated that static, resistive, magnetohydrodynamic
equilibria, in the presence of spatially-uniform electrical conductivity, do
not exist in a torus under a standard set of assumed symmetries and boundary
conditions. The difficulty, which goes away in the ``periodic straight cylinder
approximation,'' is associated with the necessarily non-vanishing character of
the curl of the Lorentz force, j x B. Here, we ask if there exists a spatial
profile of electrical conductivity that permits the existence of zero-flow,
axisymmetric r esistive equilibria in a torus, and answer the question in the
affirmative. However, the physical properties of the conductivity profile are
unusual (the conductivity cannot be constant on a magnetic surface, for
example) and whether such equilibria are to be considered physically possible
remains an open question.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
Exploiting multimedia in creating and analysing multimedia Web archives
The data contained on the web and the social web are inherently multimedia and consist of a mixture of textual, visual and audio modalities. Community memories embodied on the web and social web contain a rich mixture of data from these modalities. In many ways, the web is the greatest resource ever created by human-kind. However, due to the dynamic and distributed nature of the web, its content changes, appears and disappears on a daily basis. Web archiving provides a way of capturing snapshots of (parts of) the web for preservation and future analysis. This paper provides an overview of techniques we have developed within the context of the EU funded ARCOMEM (ARchiving COmmunity MEMories) project to allow multimedia web content to be leveraged during the archival process and for post-archival analysis. Through a set of use cases, we explore several practical applications of multimedia analytics within the realm of web archiving, web archive analysis and multimedia data on the web in general
Three-dimensional cell to tissue assembly process
The present invention relates a 3-dimensional cell to tissue and maintenance process, more particularly to methods of culturing cells in a culture environment, either in space or in a gravity field, with minimum fluid shear stress, freedom for 3-dimensional spatial orientation of the suspended particles and localization of particles with differing or similar sedimentation properties in a similar spatial region
The Changing Shape of Legal Information
As IT, Reference and Instruction librarians, we have experienced significant changes to the shape of legal information over the past five years. The changes are to both the very nature of legal information and how we perceive it. This can be illustrated by our use of the phrase legal information . Depending on your age and life situation, the words legal information will have created specific images in your mind. These changes in perception challenge how we develop our programs of legal research instruction
Quiescent X-Ray/Optical Counterparts of the Black Hole Transient H 1705-250
We report the result of a new Chandra observation of the black hole X-ray
transient H 1705-250 in quiescence. H 1705-250 was barely detected in the new
50 ks Chandra observation. With 5 detected counts, we estimate the source
quiescent luminosity to be Lx~9.1e30 erg/s in the 0.5-10 keV band (adopting a
distance of 8.6 kpc). This value is in line with the quiescent luminosities
found among other black hole X-ray binaries with similar orbital periods. By
using images taken with the Faulkes Telescope North, we derive a refined
position of H 1705-250. We also present the long-term lightcurve of the optical
counterpart from 2006 to 2012, and show evidence for variability in quiescence.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRA
Why Judges Applying the Daubert Trilogy Need to Know About the Social, Institutional, and Rhetorical - And Not Just the Methodological - aspects of Science
In response to the claim that many judges are deficient in their understanding of scientific methodology, this Article identifies in recent cases (1) a pragmatic perspective on the part of federal appellate judges when they reverse trial judges who tend to idealize science (i.e., who do not appreciate the local and practical goals and limitations of science), and (ii) an educational model of judicial gatekeeping that results in reversal of trial judges who defer to the social authority of science (i.e., who mistake authority for reliability). Next, this Article observes that courts (in the cases it analyzes) are not interested in pragmatically constructing legal science, but rather attempt to ensure that science itself, conceived pragmatically (i.e., without idealizing science), is appropriated in law. This Article concludes that trial judges who fail to appreciate the social, institutional, and rhetorical aspects of science tend to reject reliableāalbeit pragmaticāscience, welcome unreliableāalbeit authoritativeā science, and thereby create a body of legal science that is out of sync with mainstream science
Direct Foreign Investment in the Caribbean: A Legal and Policy Analysis
The purpose of this Article is to delineate the central issues facing countries which seek to encourage direct foreign investment in their local economies, and to suggest which approaches to these issues appear most likely to facilitate the attraction of foreign capital, technology and expertise, while preserving local control over the potentially detrimental effects of such investment
