Particular Resonances: A Review of Jonathan Wyatt’s Therapy, Stand-Up, and the Gesture of Writing: Towards Creative-Relational Inquiry
I want to start with talking a little about resonances.
To resonate means to meet. To vibrate with something in some way. Jonathan’s book is full of resonances. It is crafted of them. Resonances between disciplines; therapy, stand-up, writing. Resonances between characters in these worlds. Resonances between knowing, ethics, and the real. Resonances between affective states of personing– which isn’t quite the same as being human. And resonances between the author and the reader; Jonathan’s stories touch us with their humour, their caring for the process of inquiry, and their openness. He confesses things that I’m sure we can all relate to. Anyone who has stood on a stage will, for instance, – and spoiler alert – resonate when Jonathan dies
Deconfined Fermions but Confined Coherence?
The cuprate superconductors and certain organic conductors exhibit transport
which is qualitatively anisotropic, yet at the same time other properties of
these materials strongly suggest the existence of a Fermi surface and low
energy excitations with substantial free electron character. The former of
these features is very difficult to account for if the material possesses three
dimensional coherence, while the latter is inconsistent with a description
based on a two dimensional fixed point. We therefore present a new proposal for
these materials in which they are categorized by a fixed point at which
transport in one direction is not renormalization group irrelevant, but is
intrinsically incoherent, i.e. the incoherence is present in a pure system, at
zero temperature. The defining property of such a state is that single electron
coherence is confined to lower dimensional subspaces (planes or chains) so that
it is impossible to observe interference effects between histories which

Recreational users in Kaimanawa and Kaweka Forest Parks
This research has been undertaken under contract to the New Zealand Forest Service. It has arisen from a major study of recreational hunting in the Central North Island (Groome, Simmons, Clark, 1983).
A significant data base on Forest Park Users in the Kaimanawa/Kaweka region was assembled for the recreational hunting study. While the principal purpose of that data was to explore the compatibility of a Recreational Hunting Area with existing uses of the Forest Parks, the comprehensiveness of, and response to the surveys suggested that further analysis would also be useful to management.
The aim of this report, then, is to separately describe key recreational user groups within the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Forest Parks. It is envisaged that this will have direct benefit to planning and help determine promotional activity by describing recreational preference and participation behaviour of park users
Nod1 signaling overcomes resistance of S. pneumoniae to opsonophagocytic killing
Airway infection by the Gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) leads to recruitment of neutrophils but
limited bacterial killing by these cells. Co-colonization by Sp and a Gram-negative species, Haemophilus influenzae (Hi),
provides sufficient stimulus to induce neutrophil and complement-mediated clearance of Sp from the mucosal surface
in a murine model. Products from Hi, but not Sp, also promote killing of Sp by ex vivo neutrophil-enriched peritoneal
exudate cells. Here we identify the stimulus from Hi as its peptidoglycan. Enhancement of opsonophagocytic killing
was facilitated by signaling through nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-1 (Nod1), which is involved in
recognition of γ-D-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-DAP) contained in cell walls of Hi but not Sp. Neutrophils
from mice treated with Hi or compounds containing meso-DAP, including synthetic peptidoglycan fragments, showed
increased Sp killing in a Nod1-dependent manner. Moreover, Nod1-/- mice showed reduced Hi-induced clearance of Sp
during co-colonization. These observations offer insight into mechanisms of microbial competition and demonstrate
the importance of Nod1 in neutrophil-mediated clearance of bacteria in vivo
Towards a flexible Decision Support Tool for MSY-based Marine Protected Area design for skates and rays

Here we combine escapement biomass—the percentage of the stock which must be retained each year to conserve it—with maps of predicted Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) of four ray species [cuckoo (Leucoraja naevus), thornback (Raja clavata), blonde (Raja brachyura), and spotted (Raja montagui)], created using Boosted Regression Tree modelling. We then use a Decision Support Tool to generate location and size options for Marine Protected Areas to protect these stocks, based on the priorities of the various stakeholders, notably the minimisation of fishing effort displacement. Variations of conservation/fishing priorities are simulated, as well as differential priorities for individual species, with a focus on protecting nursery grounds and spawning areas. Prioritizing high CPUE cells results in a smaller closed area that displaces the most fishing effort, whereas prioritizing low fishing effort results in a larger closed area that displaces the least fishing effort. The final result is a complete software package that produces maps of predicted species CPUE from limited survey data, and allows disparate stakeholders and policymakers to discuss management options within a mapping interface
Double reading in breast cancer screening : cohort evaluation in the CO-OPS trial
Purpose:
To investigate the effect of double readings by a second radiologist on recall rates, cancer detection and characteristics of cancers detected in the National Health Service Breast Screening Program in England.
Materials and Methods:
In this retrospective analysis we evaluated 805,206 women through screening and diagnostic test results by extracting one year of routine data from 33 English breast screening centers. Centers used double reading of digital mammograms, with arbitration if there were discrepant reads. Information on reader decisions, with results of follow-up tests, were used to explore the effect of the second reader. The statistical tests used were the test for equality of proportions, the χ2 test for independence and the t-test.
Results:
The first reader recalled 4·76%, (38295/805206, 95% CI 4·71%-4·80%) of women. Two readers recalled 6·19% in total, (49857/805206, 95% CI 6·14%- 6·24%), but arbitration of discordant reads reduced recall rate to 4·08%, (32863/805206, 95% CI 4·04%-4·12%, p<0.001). 7055 cancers were detected of which 627 (8·89%, 95% CI 8·22%-9·55%, p<0.001) were detected by the second reader only. These additional cancers were more likely to be ductal carcinoma in situ, (30·5% (183/600) vs 22.0% (1344/6114), p<0.001); and additional invasive cancers were smaller (mean 14·2mm vs 16·7mm, p<0.001), had fewer involved nodes, and were likely to be lower grade.
Conclusion:
Double reading with arbitration reduces recall and increases cancer detection compared to single reading. Cancers detected only by the second reader were smaller, lower grade, and had less nodal involvement
The Transition Between Quantum Coherence and Incoherence
We show that a transformed Caldeira-Leggett Hamltonian has two distinct
families of fixed points, rather than a single unique fixed point as often
conjectured based on its connection to the anisotropic Kondo model. The two
families are distinguished by a sharp qualitative difference in their quantum
coherence properties and we argue that this distinction is best understood as
the result of a transition in the model between degeneracy and non-degeneracy
