Carnivory in Adult Female Eumenid Wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae) and Its Effect on Egg Production

    Get PDF
Seventy captive adult female wasps of the eumenid genera Ancistrocerus and Euodynerus were observed to feed on multiple prey items. It was shown experimentally that E. foraminatus females that fed on prey had significantly larger egg volumes than adult wasps deprived of prey

Methods for Artificial Rearing of Solitary Eumenid Wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae)

Solitary eumenid wasps of the genera Ancistrocerus and Euodynerus can be reared in small cages. Laboratory-reared larvae of the spruce budworm caterpillars, Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Torlricidae) are suitable prey

On the Areas of Cyclic and Semicyclic Polygons

We investigate the ``generalized Heron polynomial'' that relates the squared area of an n-gon inscribed in a circle to the squares of its side lengths. For a (2m+1)-gon or (2m+2)-gon, we express it as the defining polynomial of a certain variety derived from the variety of binary (2m-1)-forms having m-1 double roots. Thus we obtain explicit formulas for the areas of cyclic heptagons and octagons, and illuminate some mysterious features of Robbins' formulas for the areas of cyclic pentagons and hexagons. We also introduce a companion family of polynomials that relate the squared area of an n-gon inscribed in a circle, one of whose sides is a diameter, to the squared lengths of the other sides. By similar algebraic techniques we obtain explicit formulas for these polynomials for all n <= 7.Comment: 22 page

Energy loss analysis of an integrated space power distribution system

    Get PDF
The results of studies related to conceptual topologies of an integrated utility-like space power system are described. The system topologies are comparatively analyzed by considering their transmission energy losses as functions of mainly distribution voltage level and load composition. The analysis is expedited by use of a Distribution System Analysis and Simulation (DSAS) software. This recently developed computer program by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) uses improved load models to solve the power flow within the system. However, present shortcomings of the software with regard to space applications, and incompletely defined characteristics of a space power system make the results applicable to only the fundamental trends of energy losses of the topologies studied. Accountability, such as included, for the effects of the various parameters on the system performance can constitute part of a planning tool for a space power distribution system

Economic Forecasting: Some Lessons from Recent Research

    Get PDF
We describe a general theoretical framework against which recent results in economic forecasting can be judged, including explanations for the findings of forecasting competitions, the prevalence of forecast failure, and the role of causal variables. We compare this framework to a previous formulation which was silent on the very issues of most concern to the forecaster, then describe ten aspects which our approach illuminates, and draw out their implications for model selection. Finally, we discuss ten areas where research is needed to clarify empirical findings that still lack theoretical explanations.

This paper describes some recent advances and contributions to our understanding of economic forecasting. The framework we develop helps explain the findings of forecasting competitions and the prevalence of forecast failure. It constitutes a general theoretical background against which recent results can be judged. We compare this framework to a previous formulation, which was silent on the very issues of most concern to the forecaster. We describe a number of aspects which it illuminates, and draw out the implications for model selection. Finally, we discuss the areas where research remains needed to clarify empirical findings which lack theoretical explanations. JEL Classification: C32

Automatic Detection of Cone Photoreceptors In Split Detector Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscope Images

Quantitative analysis of the cone photoreceptor mosaic in the living retina is potentially useful for early diagnosis and prognosis of many ocular diseases. Non-confocal split detector based adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) imaging reveals the cone photoreceptor inner segment mosaics often not visualized on confocal AOSLO imaging. Despite recent advances in automated cone segmentation algorithms for confocal AOSLO imagery, quantitative analysis of split detector AOSLO images is currently a time-consuming manual process. In this paper, we present the fully automatic adaptive filtering and local detection (AFLD) method for detecting cones in split detector AOSLO images. We validated our algorithm on 80 images from 10 subjects, showing an overall mean Dice’s coefficient of 0.95 (standard deviation 0.03), when comparing our AFLD algorithm to an expert grader. This is comparable to the inter-observer Dice’s coefficient of 0.94 (standard deviation 0.04). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first validated, fully-automated segmentation method which has been applied to split detector AOSLO images

Thermodynamics of an incommensurate quantum crystal

We present a simple theory of the thermodynamics of an incommensurate quantum solid. The ground state of the solid is assumed to be an incommensurate crystal, with quantum zero-point vacancies and interstitials and thus a non-integer number of atoms per unit cell. We show that the low temperature variation of the net vacancy concentration should be as T4T^4, and that the first correction to the specific heat due to this varies as T7T^7; these are quite consistent with experiments on solid 4^4He. We also make some observations about the recent experimental reports of ``supersolidity'' in solid 4^4He that motivate a renewed interest in quantum crystals.Comment: revised, new title, somewhat expande
