Lead toxicity and genetics in Flint, MI
It has been well established that lead poisoning, as defined by the CDC as blood lead levels (BLLs) at or above 5 μg/dl, can lead to long-term neurotoxic effects in children and requires immediate treatment. As such, the CDC has long recommended clinicians’ assess to all patients for lead exposure and test BLLs for all at-risk patients. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that there is no safe level of lead for children due to the irreversible lifelong detrimental effects of lead exposure.2,3 Since the disaster of lead contaminated drinking water in Flint, MI has been uncovered, action has been taken to test children for lead poisoning. However, when children are tested and results show that lead levels are below the 5 μg/dl criteria no further follow-up is conducted with these children, as they are deemed ‘healthy’. This practice is problematic, given that other studies have shown that blood lead levels, even at rates lower than the poison range can be detrimental to a child’s health. The estimated population of Flint is ~99,002, with about 27% of the residents categorised as children under the age of 18 years. Therefore, more than ~26,730 children, of whom 60% are African Americans (N=16,038), have been exposed to environmental lead in the drinking water.National Institute of Nursing Research (U.S.) (Grant NR013520
The infrared imaging spectrograph (IRIS) for TMT: sensitivities and simulations
We present sensitivity estimates for point and resolved astronomical sources
for the current design of the InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) on the
future Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). IRIS, with TMT's adaptive optics system,
will achieve unprecedented point source sensitivities in the near-infrared
(0.84 - 2.45 {\mu}m) when compared to systems on current 8-10m ground based
telescopes. The IRIS imager, in 5 hours of total integration, will be able to
perform a few percent photometry on 26 - 29 magnitude (AB) point sources in the
near-infrared broadband filters (Z, Y, J, H, K). The integral field
spectrograph, with a range of scales and filters, will achieve good
signal-to-noise on 22 - 26 magnitude (AB) point sources with a spectral
resolution of R=4,000 in 5 hours of total integration time. We also present
simulated 3D IRIS data of resolved high-redshift star forming galaxies (1 < z <
5), illustrating the extraordinary potential of this instrument to probe the
dynamics, assembly, and chemical abundances of galaxies in the early universe.
With its finest spatial scales, IRIS will be able to study luminous, massive,
high-redshift star forming galaxies (star formation rates ~ 10 - 100 M yr-1) at
~100 pc resolution. Utilizing the coarsest spatial scales, IRIS will be able to
observe fainter, less massive high-redshift galaxies, with integrated star
formation rates less than 1 M yr-1, yielding a factor of 3 to 10 gain in
sensitivity compared to current integral field spectrographs. The combination
of both fine and coarse spatial scales with the diffraction-limit of the TMT
will significantly advance our understanding of early galaxy formation
processes and their subsequent evolution into presentday galaxies.Comment: SPIE Astronomical Instrumentation 201
The utilization of an infrared imaging system as a cooling slot blockage detector in the inspection of a transpiration cooled nozzle
A comprehensive examination of the 8 foot temperature tunnel's transpiration cooled nozzle was completed using an infrared imaging radiometer to locate regions of cooling flow irregularities caused by obstruction of three or more adjacent cooling slots. Restrictions in the cooling flow were found and cataloged. Blockages found were due primarily to the presence of residual phosphoric acid being discharged from some of the cooling slots. This acid was used during construction of the nozzle components and was to have been purged prior to its delivery to the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). In addition, a radial displacement of one selection of discs located in the spool piece was inspected and cataloged for future reference. There did not seem to be a serious restriction of flow in this defect, but evidence from the infrared images indicated reduced slot activity within the gouge. The radiometer survey uncovered regions where closer inspection is recommended but did not cover the entire surface area of the three nozzle subsections due to equipment limitations. The clinical relevance and newsworthiness of NIHR HTA-funded research: a cohort study
ObjectiveTo assess the clinical relevance and newsworthiness of the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme funded reports.Study designRetrospective cohort study.SettingThe cohort included 311 NIHR HTA Programme funded reports publishing in HTA in the period 1 January 2007–31 December 2012. The McMaster Online Rating of Evidence (MORE) system independently identified the clinical relevance and newsworthiness of NIHR HTA publications and non-NIHR HTA publications. The MORE system involves over 4000 physicians rating publications on a scale of relevance (the extent to which articles are relevant to practice) and a scale of newsworthiness (the extent to which articles contain news or something clinicians are unlikely to know).Main outcome measuresThe proportion of reports published in HTA meeting MORE inclusion criteria and mean average relevance and newsworthiness ratings were calculated and compared with publications from the same studies publishing outside HTA and non-NIHR HTA funded publications.Results286/311 (92.0%) of NIHR HTA reports were assessed by MORE, of which 192 (67.1%) passed MORE criteria. The average clinical relevance rating for NIHR HTA reports was 5.48, statistically higher than the 5.32 rating for non-NIHR HTA publications (mean difference=0.16, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.29, p=0.01). Average newsworthiness ratings were similar between NIHR HTA reports and non-NIHR HTA publications (4.75 and 4.70, respectively; mean difference=0.05, 95% CI ?0.18 to 0.07, p=0.402). NIHR HTA-funded original research reports were statistically higher for newsworthiness than reviews (5.05 compared with 4.64) (mean difference=0.41, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.64, p=0.001).ConclusionsFunding research of clinical relevance is important in maximising the value of research investment. Item Response Modeling of Multivariate Count Data With Zero Inflation, Maximum Inflation, and Heaping
Questionnaires that include items eliciting count responses are becoming increasingly common in psychology. This study proposes methodological techniques to overcome some of the challenges associated with analyzing multivariate item response data that exhibit zero inflation, maximum inflation, and heaping at preferred digits. The modeling framework combines approaches from three literatures: item response theory (IRT) models for multivariate count data, latent variable models for heaping and extreme responding, and mixture IRT models. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System are used as a motivating example. Practical implications are discussed, and recommendations are provided for researchers who may wish to use count items on questionnaires
Beyond the T Dwarfs: Theoretical Spectra, Colors, and Detectability of the Coolest Brown Dwarfs
We explore the spectral and atmospheric properties of brown dwarfs cooler
than the latest known T dwarfs. Our focus is on the yet-to-be-discovered
free-floating brown dwarfs in the \teff range from 800 K to 130 K
and with masses from 25 to 1 \mj. This study is in anticipation of the new
characterization capabilities enabled by the launch of SIRTF and the eventual
launch of JWST. We provide spectra from 0.4 \mic to 30 \mic, highlight
the evolution and mass dependence of the dominant HO, CH, and NH
molecular bands, consider the formation and effects of water-ice clouds, and
compare our theoretical flux densities with the sensitivities of the
instruments on board SIRTF and JWST. The latter can be used to determine the
detection ranges from space of cool brown dwarfs. In the process, we determine
the reversal point of the blueward trend in the near-infrared colors with
decreasing \teff, the \teffs at which water and ammonia clouds appear, the
strengths of gas-phase ammonia and methane bands, the masses and ages of the
objects for which the neutral alkali metal lines are muted, and the increasing
role as \teff decreases of the mid-infrared fluxes longward of 4 \mic. These
changes suggest physical reasons to expect the emergence of at least one new
stellar class beyond the T dwarfs. Our spectral models populate, with cooler
brown dwarfs having progressively more planet-like features, the theoretical
gap between the known T dwarfs and the known giant planets. Such objects likely

A perspective for sequencing familial hypercholesterolaemia in African Americans
African Americans suffer disproportionately from poor cardiovascular health outcomes despite similar proportions of African Americans and Americans of European ancestry experiencing elevated cholesterol levels. Some of the variation in cardiovascular outcomes is due to confounding effects of other risk factors, such as hypertension and genetic influence. However, genetic variants found to contribute to variation in serum cholesterol levels in populations of European ancestry are less likely to replicate in populations of African ancestry. To date, there has been limited follow-up on variant discrepancies or on identifying variants that exist in populations of African ancestry. African and African-American populations have the highest levels of genetic heterogeneity, which is a factor that must be considered when evaluating genetic variants in the burgeoning era of personalised medicine. Many of the large published studies identifying genetic variants associated with disease risk have evaluated populations of mostly European ancestry and estimated risk in other populations based on these findings. The purpose of this paper is to provide a perspective, using familial hypercholesterolaemia as an exemplar, that studies evaluating genetic variation focused within minority populations are necessary to identify factors that contribute to disparities in health outcomes and realise the full utility of personalised medicine
Interaction of Stress, Lead Burden, and Age on Cognition in Older Men: The VA Normative Aging Study
BACKGROUND. Low-level exposure to lead and to chronic stress may independently influence cognition. However, the modifying potential of psychosocial stress on the neurotoxicity of lead and their combined relationship to aging-associated decline have not been fully examined. OBJECTIVES. We examined the cross-sectional interaction between stress and lead exposure on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores among 811 participants in the Normative Aging Study, a cohort of older U.S. men. METHODS. We used two self-reported measures of stress appraisal-a self-report of stress related to their most severe problem and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Indices of lead exposure were blood lead and bone (tibia and patella) lead. RESULTS. Participants with higher self-reported stress had lower MMSE scores, which were adjusted for age, education, computer experience, English as a first language, smoking, and alcohol intake. In multivariable-adjusted tests for interaction, those with higher PSS scores had a 0.57-point lower (95% confidence interval, -0.90 to 0.24) MMSE score for a 2-fold increase in blood lead than did those with lower PSS scores. In addition, the combination of high PSS scores and high blood lead categories on one or both was associated with a 0.05-0.08 reduction on the MMSE for each year of age compared with those with low PSS score and blood lead level (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS. Psychological stress had an independent inverse association with cognition and also modified the relationship between lead exposure and cognitive performance among older men. A preliminary study of factors affecting the calibration stability of the iridium versus iridium-40 percent rhodium thermocouple
An iridium versus iridium-40% rhodium thermocouple was studied. Problems associated with the use of this thermocouple for high temperature applications (up to 2000 C) were investigated. The metallurgical studies included X-ray, macroscopic, resistance, and metallographic studies. The thermocouples in the as-received condition from the manufacturer revealed large amounts of internal stress caused by cold working during manufacturing. The thermocouples also contained a large amount of inhomogeneities and segregations. No phase transformations were observed in the alloy up to 1100 C. It was found that annealing the thermocouple at 1800 C for two hours, and then at 1400 C for 2 to 3 hours yielded a fine grain structure, relieving some of the strains, and making the wire more ductile. It was also found that the above annealing procedure stabilized the thermal emf behavior of the thermocouple for application below 1800 C (an improvement from + or - 1% to + or - 0.02% within the range of the test parameters used)
