    Influence of interface roughness in quantum cascade lasers

    We use a numerical model based on non-equilibrium Green's functions to investigate the influence of interface roughness (IFR) scattering in terahertz quantum cascade lasers. We confirm that IFR is an important phenomenon that affects both current and gain. The simulations indicate that IFR causes a leakage current that transfers electrons from the upper to the lower laser state. In certain cases, this current can greatly reduce gain. In addition, individual interfaces and their impact on the renormalized single particle energies are studied and shown to give both blue-and red-shifts of the gain spectrum.     Cinematic virtual reality for anxiety management in mechanically ventilated patients: a feasibility and pilot study

    Background Mechanically ventilated patients experience anxiety for many reasons. Pharmacological treatments such as benzodiazepines are commonly employed to manage anxiety; however, these therapies often cause undesired side effects. Additional therapies for anxiety management are needed. We sought to determine whether cell phone-based virtual reality therapy could feasibly be used for anxiety management in mechanically ventilated patients. Methods Mechanically ventilated subjects underwent at least one session of virtual reality therapy in which they were shown a cinematic video of an outdoor green space or blue space with 360° visual range of motion. Goal session duration was 5 minutes. The primary outcome was incidence of predefined patient safety events, including self-extubation and accidental removal of tubes or lines. Results Ten subjects underwent a total of 18 virtual reality sessions. Fifteen sessions lasted the planned 5 minutes, one session was extended at participant request, and two sessions were terminated early at participant request. There were no occurrences of the predefined safety events, and no occurrences of cybersickness. Use of a visual analog scale to measure anxiety level was feasible for this pilot study, demonstrating feasibility of this scale for future, larger scale studies. Conclusions Virtual reality therapy shows potential as a means of managing anxiety in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, and further rigorous exploration with this protocol is feasible

    Temperature dependence of current self-oscillations and electric field domains in sequential tunneling doped superlattices

    We examine how the current--voltage characteristics of a doped weakly coupled superlattice depends on temperature. The drift velocity of a discrete drift model of sequential tunneling in a doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice is calculated as a function of temperature. Numerical simulations and theoretical arguments show that increasing temperature favors the appearance of current self-oscillations at the expense of static electric field domain formation.     Quasiperiodic time dependent current in driven superlattices: distorted Poincare maps and strange attractors

    Intriguing routes to chaos have been experimentally observed in semiconductor superlattices driven by an ac field. In this work, a theoretical model of time dependent transport in ac driven superlattices is numerically solved. In agreement with experiments, distorted Poincare maps in the quasiperiodic regime are found. They indicate the appearance of very complex attractors and routes to chaos as the amplitude of the AC signal increases. Distorted maps are caused by the discrete well-to-well jump motion of a domain wall during spiky high-frequency self-sustained oscillations of the current.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Clumped isotope record of salinity variations in the Subboreal Province at the Middle–Late Jurassic transition

    Results of clumped isotope, oxygen isotope and elemental (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca) analyses of exceptionally well-preserved belemnite rostra and ammonite shells from the uppermost Callovian–Upper Kimmeridgian (Lamberti–Mutabilis zones) of the Russian Platform are presented. Despite a significant decrease in belemnite δ18O values across the Upper Oxfordian–Lower Kimmeridgian, the clumped isotope data show a constant seawater temperature (ca. 16 °C) in the studied interval. The decrease in belemnite δ18O values and lower δ18O values measured from ammonite shells are interpreted as a result of the salinity decline of the Middle Russian Sea of ca. 12‰, and salinity stratification of the water column, respectively. The postulated secular palaeoenvironmental changes are linked to the inflow of subtropical, saline waters from the Tethys Ocean during a sea-level highstand at the Middle–Late Jurassic transition, and progressive isolation and freshening of the Middle Russian Sea during the Late Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian. The obtained clumped isotope data demonstrate relative stability of the Late Jurassic climate and a paramount effect of local palaeoceanographic conditions on carbonate δ18O record of shallow epeiric seas belonging to the Subboreal Province. Variations in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios of cylindroteuthid belemnite rostra, which are regarded by some authors as temperature proxies, are, in turn, interpreted to be primarily dependent on global changes in seawater chemistry. The paleoenvironmental variations deduced from clumped and oxygen isotope records of the Russian Platform correspond well with changes in local cephalopod and microfossil faunas, which show increasing provincialism during the Late Oxfordian and the Early Kimmeridgian. Based on the review of literature data it is suggested that the observed salinity decrease and restriction of Subboreal basins during the Late Jurassic played a major role in the formation of periodic bottom water anoxia and sedimentation of organic rich facies

    Non-gaussianity from the inflationary trispectrum

    We present an estimate for the non-linear parameter \tau_NL, which measures the non-gaussianity imprinted in the trispectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation, \zeta. Our estimate is valid throughout the inflationary era, until the slow-roll approximation breaks down, and takes into account the evolution of perturbations on superhorizon scales. We find that the non-gaussianity is always small if the field values at the end of inflation are negligible when compared to their values at horizon crossing. Under the same assumption, we show that in Nflation-type scenarios, where the potential is a sum of monomials, the non-gaussianity measured by \tau_NL is independent of the couplings and initial conditions.Comment: 15 pages, uses iopart.sty.     Differential effects of dietary whey, casein and soya on colonic DNA damage and large bowel SCFA in rats fed diets low and high in resistant starch

    Feeding higher levels of dietary animal protein (as casein or red meat) increases colonic DNA damage and thins the colonic mucus barrier in rats. Feeding resistant starch (RS) reverses these changes and increases large bowel SCFA. The present study examined whether high dietary dairy (casein or whey) or plant (soya) proteins had similar adverse effects and whether dietary RS was protective. Adult male rats were fed diets containing 15 or 25 % casein, whey or soya protein with or without 48 % high amylose starch (as a source of RS) for 4 weeks. DNA damage was measured in isolated colonocytes using the comet assay. Higher dietary casein and soya (but not whey) increased colonocyte DNA damage. DNA damage was highest with soya when fed at 15 or 25 % protein without RS. Dietary RS attenuated protein-induced colonocyte DNA damage in all groups but it remained significantly higher in rats fed 25 % soya compared with those fed 15 % protein. Dietary protein level did not affect colonic mucus thickness overall but the barrier was thinner in rats fed high dietary casein. This effect was reversed by feeding RS. Caecal total SCFA and butyrate pools were higher in rats fed RS compared with digestible starch. Caecal and faecal SCFA were unrelated to genetic damage but correlated with mucus thickness. The present data confirm that higher dietary protein affected colonocyte DNA and colonic mucus thickness adversely but that proteins differ in their effects on these indices of colon health.     Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

    This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures.
