A new combinatorial approach to assess the influence of alloy composition on the oxidation behavior and concurrent oxygen-induced phase transformations for binary TiāxCr alloys at 650Ā°C
AbstractPoor oxidation performance of Ti-based alloys is an important life-limiting factor for high temperature applications. In this paper, a combinatorial approach is used to investigate systematically the influence of composition and time on the oxidation of TiāCr system. A compositionally graded TiāxCr specimen (0ā©½xā©½40wt%) was prepared and oxidized at 650Ā°C. The structure and composition of the oxide and near-surface region were studied and a critical composition of ā¼20wt% Cr was identified above which the oxidation resistance is enhanced. Below the critical composition transition to a rapid breakaway oxidation was observed for extended exposure times

Optical properties and spatial distribution of MgII absorbers from SDSS image stacking
We present a statistical analysis of the photometric properties and spatial
distribution of more than 2,800 MgII absorbers with 0.37<z<1 and rest
equivalent width W_0(\lambda2796)>0.8\AA detected in SDSS quasar spectra. Using
an improved image stacking technique, we measure the cross-correlation between
MgII gas and light (in the g, r, i and z-bands) from 10 to 200 kpc and infer
the light-weighted impact parameter distribution of MgII absorbers. Such a
quantity is well described by a power-law with an index that strongly depends
on W_0, ranging from ~-1 for W_0~ 1.5\AA. At redshift
0.37<z<0.55, we find the average luminosity enclosed within 100 kpc around MgII
absorbers to be M_g=-20.65+-0.11 mag, which is ~0.5 L_g*. The global
luminosity-weighted colors are typical of present-day intermediate type
galaxies. However, while the light of weaker absorbers originates mostly from
red passive galaxies, stronger systems display the colors of blue star-forming
galaxies. Based on these observations, we argue that the origin of strong MgII
absorber systems might be better explained by models of metal-enriched gas
outflows from star-forming/bursting galaxies. Our analysis does not show any
redshift dependence for both impact parameter and rest-frame colors up to z=1.
However, we do observe a brightening of the absorbers related light at high
redshift (~50% from z~0.4 to 1). We argue that MgII absorbers are a phenomenon
typical of a given evolutionary phase that more massive galaxies experience

On the Connection Between Metal Absorbers and Quasar Nebulae
We establish a simple model for the distribution of cold gas around L*
galaxies using a large set of observational constraints on the properties of
strong MgII absorber systems. Our analysis suggests that the halos of L*
galaxies are filled with cool gaseous clouds having sizes of order 1kpc and
densities of ~10^{-2} cm^{-3}. We then investigate the physical effects of
cloud irradiation by a quasar and study the resulting spectral signatures. We
show that quasar activity gives rise to (i) extended narrow-line emission on
~100kpc scales and (ii) an anisotropy in the properties of the absorbing gas
arising from the geometry of the quasar radiation field. Provided that quasars
reside in halos several times more massive than those of L* galaxies, our model
predictions appear to be in agreement with observations of narrow emission-line
nebulae around quasars and the recent detections of ~100kpc cold gaseous
envelopes around those objects, suggesting a common origin for these phenomena.

Detectors and cryostat design for the SuMIRe Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)
We describe the conceptual design of the camera cryostats, detectors, and
detector readout electronics for the SuMIRe Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)
being developed for the Subaru telescope. The SuMIRe PFS will consist of four
identical spectrographs, each receiving 600 fibers from a 2400 fiber robotic
positioner at the prime focus. Each spectrograph will have three channels
covering wavelength ranges 3800 {\AA} - 6700 {\AA}, 6500 {\AA} - 10000 {\AA},
and 9700 {\AA} - 13000 {\AA}, with the dispersed light being imaged in each
channel by a f/1.10 vacuum Schmidt camera. In the blue and red channels a pair
of Hamamatsu 2K x 4K edge-buttable CCDs with 15 um pixels are used to form a 4K
x 4K array. For the IR channel, the new Teledyne 4K x 4K, 15 um pixel,
mercury-cadmium-telluride sensor with substrate removed for short-wavelength
response and a 1.7 um cutoff will be used. Identical detector geometry and a
nearly identical optical design allow for a common cryostat design with the
only notable difference being the need for a cold radiation shield in the IR
camera to mitigate thermal background. This paper describes the details of the
cryostat design and cooling scheme, relevant thermal considerations and
analysis, and discusses the detectors and detector readout electronics
An ancient adaptive episode of convergent molecular evolution confounds phylogenetic inference
Convergence can mislead phylogenetic inference by mimicking shared ancestry, but has been detected only rarely in molecular evolution. Here, we show that significant convergence occurred in snake and agamid lizard mitochondrial genomes. Most evidence, and most of the mitochondrial genome, supports one phylogenetic tree, but a subset of mostly amino acid-altering mitochondrial sites strongly support a radically different phylogeny. These sites are convergent, probably selected, and overwhelm the signal from other sites. This suggests that convergent molecular evolution can seriously mislead phylogenetics, even with large data sets. Radical phylogenies inconsistent with previous evidence should be treated cautiously
Prevalence of frailty and cognitive impairment in older transplant candidates - a preview to the Kidney Transplantation in Older People (KTOP): impact of frailty on outcomes study

The increased vulnerability of older end stage kidney disease patients to frailty and cognitive impairment, may partially explain the differences in outcomes observed. The Kidney Transplantation in Older People (KTOP): impact of frailty on clinical outcomes study is an active clinical study aiming to explore the experience of older people waiting for and undergoing transplantation. In this manuscript we present the study protocol, the study cohort, and the prevalence of frailty and cognitive impairment identified at recruitment. Methods: The KTOP study is a single centre, prospective, mixed methods, observational study. Recruitment began in October 2019. All patients aged 60 or above either active on the deceased donor waitlist or undergoing live donor transplantation were eligible for recruitment. Recruited participants completed a series of questionnaires assessing frailty, cognition, and quality of life, which are repeated at defined time points whilst on the waitlist and post-transplant. Clinical data was concurrently collected. Any participants identified as frail or vulnerable were also eligible for enrolment into the qualitative sub-study. Results: Two hundred eight participants have been recruited (age 60ā78). Baseline Montreal Cognitive Assessments were available for 173 participants, with 63 (36.4%) participants identified as having scores below normal (score < 26). Edmonton Frail Scale assessments were available for 184 participants, with 29 participants (15.8%) identified as frail (score ā„ 8), and a further 37 participants (20.1%) identified as being vulnerable (score 6ā7). Conclusion: In the KTOP study cohort we have identified a prevalence of 36.4% of participants with MoCA scores suggestive of cognitive impairment, and a prevalence of frailty of 15.8% at recruitment. A further 20.1% were vulnerable. As formal testing for cognition and frailty is not routinely incorporated into the work up of older people across many units, the presence and significance of these conditions is likely not known. Ultimately the KTOP study will report on how these parameters evolve over time and following a transplant, and describe their impact on quality of life and clinical outcomes.Peer reviewe
