    Additive Symmetric: the Non-Negative Case

    Get PDF
International audienceAn additive symmetric b of a with respect to c satisfies c = (a+b)/2. Existence and uniqueness of such bb are basic properties in exact arithmetic that fail when a and b are floating point numbers and the computation of cc performed in IEEE-754 like arithmetic. We exhibit and prove conditions on the existence, the uniqueness and the exact correspondence of an additive symmetric when b and c have the same sign

First Names in Ile-de-France during the Revolutionary Period (1775-1825)The study of first names can provide a relevant cultural indicator for the revolutionary period, especially if it covers not just republican forenames, but the corpus as a whole. Thus, a survey of female first names dwelling on the development of the stock, the number and form of forenames, the associations or reference-systems, can shed light on significant changes. The growth and feminization of the stock, the regression of traditional modes of transmission, the renewal of references reveal that the wind of liberty blows stronger for the girls than for the boys. The image of girls seems to evolve in a more egalitarian fashion, and the affirmation of specific forms of naming could well indicate a stronger sense of female identity, even though their ideological content is not without ambiguities

Acute hormonal response to glucose, lipids and arginine infusion in overweight cats

In cats, the incidence of obesity and diabetes is increasing, and little is known about specific aspects of the endocrine control of food intake in this species. Recent data suggest that ghrelin has an important role in the control of insulin secretion and vice versa, but this role has never been demonstrated in cats. Here we aimed to improve our understanding about the relationship between insulin, amylin and ghrelin secretion in response to a nutrient load in overweight cats. After a 16h fast, weekly, six overweight male cats underwent randomly one of the four testing sessions: saline, glucose, arginine and TAG. All solutions were isoenergetic and isovolumic, and were injected intravenously as a bolus. Glucose, insulin, acylated ghrelin (AG), amylin and prolactin were assayed in plasma before and 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100min after the nutrient load. A linear mixed-effects model was used to assess the effect of bolus and time on the parameters. A parenteral bolus of glucose or arginine increased insulin and ghrelin concentrations in cats. Except for with the TAG bolus, no suppression of ghrelin was observed. The absence of AG suppression after the intravenous load of arginine and glucose may suggest: (1) that some nutrients do not promote satiation in overweight cats; or that (2) AG may be involved in non-homeostatic consumption mechanisms. However, the role of ghrelin in food reward remains to be assessed in cat

Cutoff scores for the “Interest game”, an application for the assessment of diminished interest in neurocognitive disorders

Diminished interest is a core feature of apathy that shows high prevalence in people with Mild and Major Neurocognitive disorders (NCD). In the clinical setting, apathy is mainly assessed using clinical scales and questionnaires, but new technologies are starting to be employed to complement classical instruments. Here, we explored the performance of the “Interest game,” a ludic application that assesses personal interests, in discriminating between persons with and without diminished interest based on the Apathy Diagnostic Criteria. Two hundred and twenty-seven elderly participants (56 healthy controls, 118 persons with mild-NCD, and 53 with major-NCD) completed the Interest game and were assessed by clinicians concerning the presence and the severity of apathy. Results showed that the application scores varied with the presence of apathy, the type of disorder, and the education level. Cutoff scores calculated for persons with Mild-NCD resulted in a sensitivity of 0.68 and a specificity of 0.65 for the main score index, suggesting the interest of employing this application in the clinical setting to complement the classical assessment
