    The primary purpose of this case report was to assess the effects of a specific progression of PNF and Rhythmic Stabilization Exercises (RSE) in conjunction with traditional physical therapy for a seventeen-year-old wrestler post Type II SLAP lesion surgical repair. This case report indicated that the utilization of PNF and RSE is a beneficial component to physical therapy treatment of a seventeen-year-old wrestling athlete with a Type II SLAP lesion surgical repair. Designing a treatment plan with emphasis on PNF and RSE is cost-efficient, as it does not require expensive equipment or additional certifications.     Are You Ready to get High? High Repetition Exercise for Radial Nerve Palsy

    Research suggests the need for early surgical nerve exploration for secondary radial nerve palsy based upon a 75% recovery rate with early exploration.5 In using typical conservative management plus high-repetition movement, the patient in this case report was able to avoid surgery for radial nerve exploration, attain complete recovery within 4 months of his initial injury, and fully return to work and daily function. This case report offers the possibility of high-repetition movement being a beneficial treatment intervention. This is a simple, low-cost treatment and can be accomplished by the patient at home as part of a home exercise program. For this patient, full recovery was attained without additional surgery for nerve exploration. Perhaps this case report serves as a catalyst for further research in the area of radial nerve palsy in applying a conservative treatment approach that aids in the regeneration of the radial nerve without having to turn towards surgical interventions.https://soar.usa.edu/flsafall2018/1001/thumbnail.jp

    Evolution-guided functional analyses reveal diverse antiviral specificities encoded by IFIT1 genes in mammals.

    IFIT (interferon-induced with tetratricopeptide repeats) proteins are critical mediators of mammalian innate antiviral immunity. Mouse IFIT1 selectively inhibits viruses that lack 2'O-methylation of their mRNA 5' caps. Surprisingly, human IFIT1 does not share this antiviral specificity. Here, we resolve this discrepancy by demonstrating that human and mouse IFIT1 have evolved distinct functions using a combination of evolutionary, genetic and virological analyses. First, we show that human IFIT1 and mouse IFIT1 (renamed IFIT1B) are not orthologs, but are paralogs that diverged >100 mya. Second, using a yeast genetic assay, we show that IFIT1 and IFIT1B proteins differ in their ability to be suppressed by a cap 2'O-methyltransferase. Finally, we demonstrate that IFIT1 and IFIT1B have divergent antiviral specificities, including the discovery that only IFIT1 proteins inhibit a virus encoding a cap 2'O-methyltransferase. These functional data, combined with widespread turnover of mammalian IFIT genes, reveal dramatic species-specific differences in IFIT-mediated antiviral repertoires

    Flat Oval Spiral Duct Deflection

    The deflection of a spiral duct depends on its flat span, gauge, pressure, and reinforcement. Furthermore, the duct weight determines the cost of installation, not only in material costs but also labor, which is bid by the duct weight. The current duct deflection standard, the rectangular-duct construction standard, does not accurately represent flat-oval spiral ducts. Therefore, the objective of this project was to perform those experiments necessary to support the development of a standard for the installation of flat-oval spiral ducting. Also in support of standard development, the project developed empirical models to represent unreinforced ducts for positive and negative pressures along with T-25 ducts for positive pressures. In conclusion, the development of a flat-oval spiral duct deflection standard is important to the HVAC industry, because it would allow engineers to perform reliable duct design with a focus on reductions in material and installation cost. The collected data, empirical modeling, and data analysis that has resulted from this project will form the foundation for development of a flat-oval duct deflection standard. Specifically, the project reported herein resulted in deflection-pressure data for a broad range of un- reinforced and reinforced ducts. The test matrix was designed to provide sufficient experimental data to develop empirical deflection models for unreinforced ducts and T-25 positive-pressure ducts. In addition, a more limited test matrix for other rein- forced ducts allows for qualitative analysis and empirical observations. The contour plots, constructed with the aid of empirical models, can be used to identify duct sizes and types that satisfy deflection criteria at specific pressures, which is a major step in developing duct standards

    Small Business Marketing Strategies for Physical Therapy Practice Owners

    The United States economy depends on small businesses, which represent 99% of all businesses in the United States, yet approximately 50% of small businesses cease operations in the first 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the marketing strategies used by owners of small businesses to develop and maintain their organization through the initial 5 years of business operation. The population included 5 physical therapy business owners in northeastern Florida who had sustained their business for a minimum of 5 years. The conceptual framework for this study was the brand equity model, and data were collected through semistructured interviews, online company marketing materials, and archival company documents. Yin\u27s 5-step analysis guided the data analysis process: (a) collecting data, (b) grouping data into codes (c) grouping data into themes (d) assessing the themes, and (e) developing conclusions. Member checking, transcript review, and triangulation were used to validate the study data. The 5 study themes were brand awareness, relationship marketing, perceived quality, social media and online marketing, and word-of-mouth marketing. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential for economic growth in the physical therapy practice market, as well as improved patient access to physical therapy services through a greater number of physical therapy practices

    Given its popularity, institutions are looking for ways to capitalize on Facebook to market, recruit, and engage students during the admission and matriculation processes. One approach is the development of “Class of” Facebook pages for admitted students. This interpretivist case study explores first-year students' perceptions of participating in a regional research university's "Class of" Facebook page. Uses and Gratification theory is used to identify the student needs being met through the use of these pages. Findings included students' benefit from these pages by seeking information, learning normative behaviors and developing a sense of community.
