    Optical and Transport Anisotropy in Poly(9,9'-dioctyl-fluorene-alt-bithiophene) Films Prepared by Floating Film Transfer Method

    We demonstrated the fabrication of self-aligned poly(9,9'-dioctyl-fluorene-alt-bithiophene) copolymer (F8T2) thin films at ambient temperature with a new solution-process technique named floating film transfer method (FTM). Atomic force microscope topography and polarized absorption spectroscopy showed that the polymer main chains aligned perpendicularly to the film propagation direction during the fabrication process. FTM films presented absorption dichroic ratios slightly below 3. Top-contact/bottom-gate field effect transistors made with FTM films exhibited anisotropic transport properties with a hole mobility along the aligned direction of F8T2 main chains of 2.2×10-3 cm2/(Vcenterdots), which was around 2.5 times greater than that along the perpendicular direction. Dichroic and transport anisotropy ratios were further enhanced up to 7–8 by thermal annealing, although the mobility improvement remained limited due to possible trapping effect at domain boundaries

    Macroscopic self ordering of solution processible poly (3,3'-dialkylquaterthiophene) by floating film transfer method

    Ordering and alignment of p-conjugated polymer chains are highly desirable for high performance and long life organic electronic devices. We report here self assembly of ordered and aligned solution processible Poly(3,3‴-dialkylquaterthiophene) (PQT-12) polymer at macroscopic level using Floating Film Transfer Method (FTM). PQT-12 polymer film is formed over solution of ethylene glycol and glycerol at different temperatures viz. 22, 26, 33, and 38 C. PQT-12 films formed by FTM technique are further characterized for optical and morphological properties. UV-vis absorption (for polarize and unpolarize light) and surface topography/phase imaging are carried out by using UV-vis spectrometer and atomic force microscope (AFM), respectively. UV-vis spectra show the polymer chains alignment perpendicular to the film propagation direction and it is well supported by AFM images. The effect of temperature on ordering and alignment of PQT-12 shows 33 C as an optimum temperature for alignment of polymer chains (a little compromise in ordering). The heating of polymer films at 110 C for 2 h in ambient causes significant changes in UV-vis absorbance spectra, optical anisotropy, and AFM topography/phase imaging. Our studies provide better understanding of ordering and alignment of PQT-12 chains and also disordering on heating. This work further provides a facile and user-friendly technique for the long range ordered self assembly of PQT-12, which shows enormous potential for various electronic applications

    T cell lymphoproliferative disorders associated with anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha antibody therapy for ulcerative colitis: literature summary

    The enhanced risk of development of lymphoproliferative disorders in patients with inflammatory bowel disease has been attributed to immunosuppressive/immunomodulatory therapies. Infliximab is a chimeric monoclonal immunoglobulin G1 antibody directed against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998 as an effective therapeutic agent against inflammatory bowel disease. Malignant lymphomas of both B and T cell lineage have been described in patients undergoing therapy involving TNF-α blockade. To date, eight cases of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-negative hepatosplenic T cell lymphoma associated with infliximab have been reported to the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System, as well as several other T cell lymphoproliferative disorders with aggressive clinical outcomes. We present the histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features of a T cell lymphoproliferative disorder involving the axillary lymph node of a 33-year-old male following infliximab treatment for ulcerative colitis. These EBV-negative lymphomas suggest that lymphoproliferative disorders following infliximab treatment for inflammatory bowel disease may involve EBV-independent immune dysregulation. The spectrum of lymphoproliferative disorders associated with infliximab and the potential mechanisms by which they occur are discussed

    Toxic risk of stereotactic body radiotherapy and concurrent helical tomotherapy followed by erlotinib for non-small-cell lung cancer treatment - case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) applied by helical tomotherapy (HT) is feasible for lung cancer in clinical. Using SBRT concurrently with erlotinib for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not reported previously.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>A 77-year-old man with stage III NSCLC, received erlotinib 150 mg/day, combined with image-guided SBRT via HT. A total tumor dose of 54 Gy/9 fractions was delivered to the tumor bed. The tumor responded dramatically and the combined regimen was well tolerated. After concurrent erlotinib-SBRT, erlotinib was continued as maintenance therapy. The patient developed dyspnea three months after the combined therapy and radiation pneumonitis with interstitial lung disease was suspected.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Combination SBRT, HT, and erlotinib therapy provided effective anti-tumor results. Nonetheless, the potential risks of enhanced adverse effects between radiation and erlotinib should be monitored closely, especially when SBRT is part of the regimen.</p
