    An unusual foreign body of esophagus

    We report a rare case of an unusually long foreign body (Datun) impacted in the esophagus of a 56 year-old gentleman. He was literate, without any psychiatric illness and had been using “Neem” (Azadirachta indica) stick for cleaning his teeth for the past twenty years. Neem sticks are used for brushing teeth, perhaps one of the earliest and very effective dental care. On closer questioning he revealed his habit of passing the Neem stick into his throat with the aim of cleaning it too while cleaning his teeth. He presented to our emergency early in the morning with this strange long foreign body impacted in his esophagus which was removed successfully using a Jackson’s adult rigid oesophagoscope. We believe this to be the first case of such an unusually long foreign body to be reported in the literature

    Supmech, the universal mechanics developed in the previous two papers, accommodates both quantum and classical mechanics as subdisciplines (a brief outline is included for completeness); this feature facilitates, in a supmech based treatment of quantum measurements, an unambiguous treatment of the apparatus as a quantum system approximated well by a classical one. Taking explicitly into consideration the fact that observations on the apparatus are made when it has `settled down after the measurement interaction' and are restricted to macroscopically distinguishable pointer readings, the unwanted superpositions of (system + apparatus) states are shown to be suppressed; this provides a genuinely physics based justification for the (traditionally \emph{postulated}) von Neumann projection/collapse rule. The decoherence mechanism brought into play by the stated observational constraints is free from the objections against the traditional decoherence program.Comment: 29 pages; one section and two references added; results unchange

    Asset-Liability Management of Maybank During 1991-1997

    This study sought to analyze the assets and liabilities management in banking with a focus on the experience of Maybank which is one of the leading banks in Malaysia. The liabilities and asset structure of this as reflected in its balance sheets for the period of 1991-1997 have been examined as a case study. The study is data based. It is primarily based on balance sheet statements of Maybank which is incorporated in its annual reports. With a scrutiny of these annual reports we used a quantitative approach in analysing the significance of major variables such as deposits, credits, investment, loan and among others to see how asset and liability of the bank is managed. Specifically some ratios and percentages have been computed to see how the bank managed its business to achieve its diverse goals of profitability and liquidity in order to win the confidence and trust of its customers and public at large in the country. The findings on this study shows that Maybank’s asset and liability are well managed and it is economically performing well in banking business. Despite the present dismal economic situation in the country, the bank has managed to make some profit around RM0.50 million in 1997-1998(June End). In the next millennium the bank need to prepare for still better strategies to meet the new challenges

    Transverse beam polarization and CP-violating triple-gauge-boson couplings in e+e- -> gamma Z

    We show that an anomalous CP-violating gamma-gamma-Z vertex gives rise to a novel asymmetry with transversely polarized electron and positron beams in the process e+e- -> gamma Z. This asymmetry, which is odd under naive time reversal, is proportional to the real part of the gamma-gamma-Z CP-violating coupling. This is in contrast to the simple forward-backward asymmetry of the gamma (or Z) with unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams studied earlier, which is even under naive time reversal, and is proportional to the imaginary part. We estimate the sensitivity of future experiments to the determination of CP-odd gamma-gamma-Z and gamma-Z-Z couplings using these asymmetries and transversely polarized beams.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 7 figures included as postscrip

    We explore the possibility that the existing data on like-sign dileptons at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon (4S) resonance consist of events arising from Bd0Bˉd0B_{d}^0 -\bar B_{d}^0 mixing and also from ΔB=ΔQ\Delta B = - \Delta Q transitions.     Callus induction and regeneration of elite Indian maize inbreds

    Five elite Indian maize inbreds namely; HKI1105, HKI1105, HKI335, CM300 and LM5 were evaluated for callus induction and regeneration. Immature embryos obtained 14 days after pollination were used as explants. Genotype, medium, type of auxin and their concentrations influenced callus induction. N6 medium supplemented with different concentration of 2,4-D (1, 2 and 3 mg/l) and Dicamba (1, 2 and 3 mg/l) were used for callus induction. N6 supplemented with 2 mg/l of 2,4-D has shown highest percentage of embryogenic callus induction. Among the five genotypes tested, CM300 gave highest percentage of embryogenic calli. CM300 and LM5 both have shown higher regeneration percentage of 12.22%.Key words: Maize, in-vitro culture and regeneration

    We present a technique to determine the CP violating phases, as well as, the lifetime differences of the mass eigenstates for both BdB_d and BsB_s, by considering correlated BBˉB\bar{B} pairs produced at the Υ\Upsilon resonances. We do not require a detailed time dependent study, but only partial time integrated rates, with the tag time, either preceding or following the decay of the other BB meson to a final state f. f may be a CP eigenstate or a non-CP eigenstate.Comment: 11 Pages Revte

    Formulation of Emulsion Paint from a Copolymer Composite of Dimethylol Urea/Polystyrene

    Dimethylol urea (DMU) with reduced formaldehyde emission was synthesized in this work and copolymerized by blending with polystyrene (PS) obtained by constituting waste expanded polystyrene into liquid form. The determined physical properties of the copolymer composite (i.e. DMU/PS) compared to the pure DMU revealed improvements in its disadvantageous properties such as hardness and moisture uptake. Paint samples were formulated using the pure DMU, DMU/PS and commercially obtained acrylic PVA binder resin, and analyzed. While the DMU/PS and APVA paints passed, the pure DMU failed such critical coating tests as flexibility, adhesion and blistering. Again, the DMU/PS and PVA paints show good chemical resistance while the DMU paint blisters in the alkaline medium. However, all paint samples passed tackiness, opacity and stability, and exhibit acceptable pH, viscosity, and drying time. Keywords: Dimethylol urea, Polystyrenes, Copolymer composite, Emulsion pain
