    Cognitive Processing Strategies in Reading

    The present study examined the cognitive processing strategies of good and poor readers from two different grades and attempted to make an information processing analysis of reading. The performance of twenty good and twenty poor readers each from Grade 3 and Grade 5 was compared on tasks of attention, simultaneous and successive processing as well as planning. While the simultaneous and successive processing measures could differentiate the good readers from the poor ones, the former group showed their superiority in terms of attention and planning only when the task characteristic was complex. The results were interpreted within the theoretical framework of the PASS model suggesting cyclical hierarchical involvement of the two coding processes in reading

    Stock assessment of Bombayduck Harpadon nehereus (Hamilton, 1822) from Gujarat coast using non-equilibrium production model

    Bombayduck Harpadon nehereus, harvested mainly by dol nets (stationary bag nets), has been a prolific fishery in the northern region of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Biomass and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) estimates for the Bombayduck stock in the Saurashtra region were obtained from a non-equilibrium surplus production model approach utilising catch per unit effort (CPUE) time series derived from fish landing data. Fox model was found to be the most appropriate defining model and the results demonstrated that the stock is currently being overexploited

    Discovering study-specific gene regulatory networks

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Microarrays are commonly used in biology because of their ability to simultaneously measure thousands of genes under different conditions. Due to their structure, typically containing a high amount of variables but far fewer samples, scalable network analysis techniques are often employed. In particular, consensus approaches have been recently used that combine multiple microarray studies in order to find networks that are more robust. The purpose of this paper, however, is to combine multiple microarray studies to automatically identify subnetworks that are distinctive to specific experimental conditions rather than common to them all. To better understand key regulatory mechanisms and how they change under different conditions, we derive unique networks from multiple independent networks built using glasso which goes beyond standard correlations. This involves calculating cluster prediction accuracies to detect the most predictive genes for a specific set of conditions. We differentiate between accuracies calculated using cross-validation within a selected cluster of studies (the intra prediction accuracy) and those calculated on a set of independent studies belonging to different study clusters (inter prediction accuracy). Finally, we compare our method's results to related state-of-the art techniques. We explore how the proposed pipeline performs on both synthetic data and real data (wheat and Fusarium). Our results show that subnetworks can be identified reliably that are specific to subsets of studies and that these networks reflect key mechanisms that are fundamental to the experimental conditions in each of those subsets

    Search for the h_c meson in B^+- ->h_c K^+-

    We report a search for the hch_c meson via the decay chain B±hcK±B^{\pm}\to h_c K^{\pm}, \etac \gamma with ηcKS0K±π\eta_c \to K_S^0 K^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} and ppˉp\bar{p}. No significant signals are observed. We obtain upper limits on the branching fractions for B±ηcγK±B^{\pm} \to \eta_c\gamma K^{\pm} in bins of the ηcγ\eta_c\gamma invariant mass. The results are based on an analysis of 253 fb1^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- collider.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Study of the Baryon-Antibaryon Low-Mass Enhancements in Charmless Three-body Baryonic B Decays

    The angular distributions of the baryon-antibaryon low-mass enhancements seen in the charmless three-body baryonic B decays B+ -> p pbar K+, B0 -> p pbar Ks, and B0 -> p Lambdabar pi- are reported. A quark fragmentation interpretation is supported, while the gluonic resonance picture is disfavored. Searches for the Theta+ and Theta++ pentaquarks in the relevant decay modes and possible glueball states G with 2.2 GeV/c2 < M-ppbar < 2.4 GeV/c2 in the ppbar systems give null results. We set upper limits on the products of branching fractions, B(B0 -> Theta+ p)\times B(Theta+ -> p Ks) Theta++ pbar) \times B(Theta++ -> p K+) G K+) \times B(G -> p pbar) < 4.1 \times 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level. The analysis is based on a 140 fb^{-1} data sample recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure files, update of hep-ex/0409010 for journal submisssio

    Heteroepitaxial growth of ferromagnetic MnSb(0001) films on Ge/Si(111) virtual substrates

    Molecular beam epitaxial growth of ferromagnetic MnSb(0001) has been achieved on high quality, fully relaxed Ge(111)/Si(111) virtual substrates grown by reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition. The epilayers were characterized using reflection high energy electron diffraction, synchrotron hard X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and magnetometry. The surface reconstructions, magnetic properties, crystalline quality, and strain relaxation behavior of the MnSb films are similar to those of MnSb grown on GaAs(111). In contrast to GaAs substrates, segregation of substrate atoms through the MnSb film does not occur, and alternative polymorphs of MnSb are absent

    Belle II is a multipurpose detector currently under construction which will be operated at the next generation B-factory SuberKEKB in Japan. Its main devices for the vertex reconstruction are the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) and the Pixel Detector (PXD). In April 2016 a sector of the Belle II SVD and PXD have been tested in a beam of high energetic electrons at the test beam facility at DESY Hamburg (Germany). We report here the results for the hit efficiency estimation and the measurement of the resolution for the Belle II silicon vertex etector. We find that the hit efficiencies are on average above 99.5% and that the measured resolution is within the expectations

    Species prioritization for marine fish stock assessments in India

    Stock assessments of fish stocks are critical for framing effective management measures of fishery resources to ensure sustainability. While species-wise national assessments have been done in the past, India has not had a prioritized list of species/resources to be assessed regularly to provide an index of the health of the country’s fishery resources. In a first of its kind for the country, a marine fish stock status (MFSS) report was published recently (CMFRI, 2023). The MFSS report indicated the sustainability status of 70 important species, encompassing 135 stocks (region-based management units) spread across 5 different coastal regions of India, viz., north-east (NE), north-west (NW), south-east (SE), south-west (SW) and Lakshadweep islands, under the prevalent fisheries management regime of the country. The assessments of the 49 finfish and 21 shellfish species were carried out using globally accepted methodologies and sustainability indicators. The study indicated that 91% of the stocks evaluated were healthy and optimally exploited, whereas the remaining 9% were found to be overfished. The report also highlighted concerns on select species and actions needed to sustain the marine fisheries sector
